The Society is also honoured that the Prime Minister, The Rt. Hon. Harold Macmillan, M.P., has consented to open the Exhibition on Wednesday, October 21st. Exhibitors at this year's Show include car manufacturers from Britain, Canada, U.S.A., France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Sweden, Czechoslovakia and—for the first time—the U.S.S.R. In addition to the cars on show, visitors are able to see a comprehensive range of exhibits in the Caravan, Coachwork, Tyre, Transport Service Equipment and Accessory and Component Sections. Dis• played on two floors of the great Exhibition Hall and covering 250,000 sq. ft. of show space, the latest and most advanced products of the British motor industry and its overseas competitors combine to provide for the visitor the year's greatest Motor Show. Exports of British cars are currently running at a higher level than ever before in the industry's history. About fifty per cent of all the cars produced in Britain are destined for overseas, and the overseas visitor to the Show is given special facilities from the moment he arrives. Free admission on the production of his passport is offered to every overseas visitor. If he is connected with the motor trade, the visitor is also given a free Catalogue, a free Buyer's Guide, and is handed a badge to attract the special attention of exhibitors. There is also an overseas lounge, comfortably furnished and reserved for his specific use, staffed by members of the Society's Overseas Department and by a corps of interpreters. All descriptions, specifications and prices quoted in this Catalogue have been supplied by exhibitors, and the Society can accept no responsibility for any inaccuracy. Prices of cars on display for sale in the United Kingdom are in• cluded in a special index printed on pages 487-503. r [9] INDEX TO EXHIBITORS CAR SECTION Stand Stand No. No. 145 A.C. • 2008 Dodge Avenger Product Heritage
Contact: Brandt Rosenbusch 2008 Dodge Avenger Product Heritage The First Avenger Plans for the first car to carry the Avenger name were initiated by the Rootes Group (later to become Chrysler Europe) in England in 1963. Intended to replace Rootes’ best-selling vehicle of the time, the Hillman Minx, the project was delayed by funding issues; another car, the Arrow, would become the replacement for the Minx. Still, Rootes executives saw the need for a smaller car, and consideration of what they would call the “B-Car” began in earnest in November 1965. It would prove to be the first and last car developed by Rootes, following its 1967 takeover by Chrysler Corporation. Said to have drawn its inspiration from Detroit, the new car featured a readily identifiable “semi-fastback” design that would become its trademark. Much consideration was given to the needs of female customers; fashion consultants were employed during the design phase. The Hillman Avenger would feature a four-link rear suspension in place of traditional leaf springs, standard front anti-roll bars and a selection of four inline-four cylinder engines. The Hillman Avenger was introduced in February 1970 to popular acclaim. This B-class vehicle, built in sedan and wagon versions to compete with the Austin 1300, Ford Escort, Vauxhall Viva and other small cars, was designed to be the basic no-frills Hillman, with a four-speed manual gearbox an all-iron overhead valve engine. Four-door saloons were built first, followed by two-door saloons and five-door “estate” models. Many variations of the basic Avenger appeared over the years.

  • Friends of Classic London Buses of the Fifties for Those Actively Involved in Or Supporting the Preservation of London Buses, Coaches and Trolleybuses of the Past
Friends of Classic London Buses of the Fifties For those actively involved in or supporting the preservation of London buses, coaches and trolleybuses of the past Here is a nice wintry shot of RT 1426, one of the Country area's Cravens-bodied examples, waiting to go to home to Windsor from Uxbridge, long ago, via the picturesque-sounding Iver Heath, George Green, Upton Lea and more mundane Wexham Road, Slough and Eton. I cannot speak for those places at the time the photograph was taken, but in more recent times it has been hard to see anything remotely rural, bucolic or delightful about any of them, and Upton Lea is nothing but a large and uninspiring housing estate on the edge of Slough. Life can be so disappointing at times! Photo by Michael Dryhurst. Newsletter 162 February 2020 Opening Lines First of all, many thanks to all those “Friends” who kindly sent us seasonal greetings at what is nowadays regarded as the “festive” season. These are of course warmly reciprocated. Thanks also to those many individuals who contribute to this monthly mayhem. All contributions are gratefully received and as many as possible are used. It matters not if you send a couple of lines or several pages, it all helps to keep us all in touch. I would also now ask vehicle owners to think about keeping us posted, especially in the case of those buses and coaches which rarely, if ever, appear in public. Many members like to know that these “ghost” buses still exist and are being cared for, or stored, or even under extensive restoration.

Notes PART 1 1 Albert M. Hyamson, David Salomons, 119; Lord Montagu of Beaulieu (ed.), History ofTen Years of Automobilism, 1896-1906, 3-4. 2 Later, another journal agreed: La Vie au Grand Air gave generous space to motoring. 3 Beaumont became a vice president of the Society of Engineers, vice chairman of the Roads Improvement Association, and consulting engineer to the Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland on its foundation in 1897. 4 Engineer (24 Apr. 1896) 425. 5 The significance of this comparison, which sounds comical today, lay in the fact that, given a good surface, the pneumatic-tyred safety bicycle was the fastest vehicle on the road, in the sense that a normally strong and healthy cyclist could keep up 12 m.p.h. for hours on end: a speed that quickly exhausted a horse in harness. Its average speeds were therefore much higher. Twenty or thirty miles in a day, commonplace for a keen cyclist, was double the capacity of a horse drawing. 6 See pp. 335-6. 7 Because the same men might have different interests, the figures add up to considerably more than the total of Conservative and Liberal M.P.s in Parliament. 8 That is, all owners of land, irrespective of other interests. See J.D. Chambers and G.E. Mingay, The Agricultural Revolution 1750-1880, 158. 9 The royal commission, set up by the government of the day, was an instrument of inquiry into major public issues that was increasingly used as an alternative to the select committee, set up by Parliament.

John Boyd Dunlop’s son complained that his solid tyre tricycle was uncomfortable and jarred as he rode along the stony streets on his way to school. John Boyd came up with the idea to wrap a rubber tyre inflated with air round the rims of his son’s tricycle and tested it by rolling it along the floor. The pneumatic tyre went much further compared to the solid tyre. John Boyd Dunlop had made history! 1888 Dunlop knew that his invention had endless potential and commercial possibilities. He patented his ‘chamber of rubber or other suitable material to contain air under pressure or otherwise, fastened to the rim by the most convenient method’ or, as we’ve come to know it, the tyre. In the years following this revolutionary invention, Dunlop has gone on to celebrate a dazzling history of performance innovation, motorsport achievements and technological advancements. 1890 Dunlop opened its first tyre plant in Dublin. 1924 Dunlop and Bentley achieve their first victory at Le Mans, the Grand Prix of Endurance. 1935 Dunlop officially opens its first tyre factory in Durban and manufactures the first car tyre in South Africa.
