2008 Dodge Avenger Product Heritage
Contact: Brandt Rosenbusch 2008 Dodge Avenger Product Heritage The First Avenger Plans for the first car to carry the Avenger name were initiated by the Rootes Group (later to become Chrysler Europe) in England in 1963. Intended to replace Rootes’ best-selling vehicle of the time, the Hillman Minx, the project was delayed by funding issues; another car, the Arrow, would become the replacement for the Minx. Still, Rootes executives saw the need for a smaller car, and consideration of what they would call the “B-Car” began in earnest in November 1965. It would prove to be the first and last car developed by Rootes, following its 1967 takeover by Chrysler Corporation. Said to have drawn its inspiration from Detroit, the new car featured a readily identifiable “semi-fastback” design that would become its trademark. Much consideration was given to the needs of female customers; fashion consultants were employed during the design phase. The Hillman Avenger would feature a four-link rear suspension in place of traditional leaf springs, standard front anti-roll bars and a selection of four inline-four cylinder engines. The Hillman Avenger was introduced in February 1970 to popular acclaim. This B-class vehicle, built in sedan and wagon versions to compete with the Austin 1300, Ford Escort, Vauxhall Viva and other small cars, was designed to be the basic no-frills Hillman, with a four-speed manual gearbox an all-iron overhead valve engine. Four-door saloons were built first, followed by two-door saloons and five-door “estate” models. Many variations of the basic Avenger appeared over the years. -

The Automobile in Japan
International and Japanese Studies Symposium The Automobile in Japan Stewart Lone, Associate Professor of East Asian History, Australian Defence Force Academy, Canberra Japan and the Age of Speed: Urban Society and the Automobile, 1925-30 p.1 Christopher Madeley, Chaucer College, Canterbury Kaishinsha, DAT, Nissan and the British Motor Vehicle Industry p.15 The Suntory Centre Suntory and Toyota International Centres for Economics and Related Disciplines London School of Economics and Political Science Discussion Paper Houghton Street No. IS/05/494 London WC2A 2AE July 2005 Tel: 020-7955-6699 Preface A symposium was held in the Michio Morishima room at STICERD on 7 April 2005 to discuss aspects of the motor industry in Japan. Stewart Lone discussed the impact which the introduction of the motor car had on Japan’s urban society in the 1920s, especially in the neighbourhood of the city of Kyoto. By way of contrast, Christopher Madeley traced the relationship between Nissan (and its predecessors) and the British motor industry, starting with the construction of the first cars in 1912 by the Kaishinsha Company, using chassis imported from Swift of Coventry. July 2005 Abstracts Lone: The 1920s saw the emergence in Kansai of modern industrial urban living with the development of the underground, air services; wireless telephones, super express trains etc. Automobiles dominated major streets from the early 1920s in the new Age of Speed. Using Kyoto city as an example, the article covers automobile advertising, procedures for taxis, buses and cars and traffic safety and regulation. Madeley: Nissan Motor Company had a longer connection with the British industry than any other Japanese vehicle manufacturer. -

České vysoké učení technické v Praze, Fakulta strojní Czech Technical University in Prague, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Dr. Ing. Gabriela Achtenová Automatizace převodovky – minulost a budoucnost Gearbox automation – past and future 1 Summary The lecture summarizes known solutions of semi and fully automatised gearboxes from the beginning of their usage in motor vehicles (from approximately 1930‘ies of last century) till nowadays. From recent designs are involved typical representatives from passenger cars and trucks. In the overview we are focusing on typical members from the family of automatised gearboxes only, i.e. on the transmissions where the gearshift occurs with interruption of torque flow. The Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) – also known as Dual Clutch Transmission − is not included in the description. The lecture ends with description of possible future evolution of automatised gearboxes. Two domains are described: • The adaptation of internal gearshift mechanism intended for automation. • Possible cover of the power gap due to the interruption of torque flow during gear shift. The author’s expectations and research work in this field are discussed. -
