4 From the editor……...

Dear Members, The Classic and vintage season is now in full swing and we are only a few weeks now from our premium event, the Westrun. We look forward to seeing you all in Clifden. I wish to thank sincerely all those who have given me interesting items, ads and old magazines to use, and also the“usual suspects” who never fail to come up with an article for publication. As promised, I have written a small feature article. This edition I have reviewed a 1974 Rolls Royce. Next time I hope to feature a 1951, 1 owner Ford Anglia. Yes, 1951, one owner! In April, I went with my young son to Charleville to participate in their Spring Run. As far as I know, I was the only WVVMC representative there. The run took us through some beautiful countryside as we went southwards through Castletownroche and into Blarney. We stopped at the Woollen Mills for afternoon tea and afterwards headed back up a different route through Ballyhooley and on to Bulgaden. The run was held up for some time when the lead broke down on a narrow lane. My son was interested to know why old Fords seemed very popular in Cork. It seemed that almost every model was represented, Anglias, Escorts, Capri’s, Granadas, Cortinas, Consuls, Zodiacs. I explained that most of these cars were built in Cork and that possibly some of these guys were the very same guys who built them. As always, if you have something to contribute to this magazine, old photos, books to loan me or just a general whinge or gripe please make contact .

OBITUARY

Tom Gleasure, RIP “Mulgrave Lodge” Castlecountess, Tralee, Co.Kerry

Sadly, the WVVMC has learned of the sudden death of Tom Gleasure, whom many of you will have met during his annual visits to Galway for our Summer Run. Tom was a very friendly and courteous man who was a regular entrant in our Westrun throughout the 1980's, 1990's and 2000's. He usually attended in his 1948 Bentley, 1956 Rolls Royce or his 1960 Triumph TR3A and happily drove them all the way up from Tralee. I, myself and other Club members would meet up with Tom at many other vintage car ral- lies around Ireland and he always made time for the chat - about what cars we had bought and sold and about we thought we might buy and sell! Tom, his brother, Pat, and his family are well-known across Kerry and south-west Ireland through their family business, “Gleasure Funeral Directors”. Unfortunately, WVVMC club members did not hear of Tom's death until some time after the fu- neral had taken place. He will be sadly missed On behalf of all in the WVVMC, I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to the Gleasure family on their sad loss.

5 The Epitome of Style Rolls Royce Silver Shadow 1 Researched and Reviewed by Ian Doherty

A good friend of mine recently purchased a 1974 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. I called around for a closer look. When new, these cars were well out of reach of even well-heeled executives and professionals, being only affordable to super-rich tycoons and famous people. Most of us mere mortals have

never even travelled in one except perhaps on our wedding day. The Silver Shadow was produced from 1965 to 1980 being re-named the Silver shadow 2 in 1977. The earlier Silver Shadow 1 (as it then became) had a number of modifications and minor facelifts during its lifetime, the biggest probably being the change from the 6.2 Litre 172hp engine to the newer 6.75Litre 189hp V8 in 1970. From the moment you sit into this car you know it is special. The door closes with a solid “thud” unlike the “tinney” clank of lesser cars of that era. The cabin is completely soundproof, the seats are thick and comfortable, just like your favourite armchair, allowing you to sit quite high, making you feel, dare I say it, superior! The rear is even more comfortable having quirky vanity mirrors to admire oneself and little stainless toggle switches to operate the interior lights. Back in the drivers seat I notice the ignition key is surprisingly small for such a substantial car. But one turn of that key and all 6.75 litres spring to life. Although quiet, the growl of the eight cylinders lets you know that this is no pussycat. Power transmission is by way of a General Motors sourced “turbo-hydramatic 400” automatic system. Being unaccustomed to driving an automatic I had to imagine I only had one leg. The selector is situated on the steering column and struck me as a bit “weak and spindly looking” being only about 10mm diameter. When you apply the power to those rear wheels you can feel the front of the car lift. At first, I thought there was something wrong as there was no jolt where I ex- pected the gear changes would happen. It was only later that I realised she had been secretly changing up through the gears. Truly seamless gear changes! The smoothest ride imagineable! Steering this car is absolutely effortless. As you look across the long bonnet you feel less of a need to steer it and more of a need to just point that spirit of ecstasy (flying lady) in the direction you wish to go. The brakes, for the time, and even for today are fantastic. The car has an extremely complex high pressure hydraulic self levelling and braking system licensed by Citroen. For it’s time this was the most innovative feature of the car but was the main contributor to that “magic carpet ride” comfort. Despite its enormous price tag when new, you can bring home a mid ‘70s UK Silver Shadow in Condition 1 for less than €15K. But beware! There is a reason for this. Running costs are huge. With Petrol heading for €7 a gallon and at 12 MPG, don’t expect to go too far. Parts availability is good, with most items available next-day from Flying Spares in the UK. Some items have been “patterned” and others are available as new, used or re-conditioned. My thanks to Paulo Sousa for allowing me to review his lovely car. 6 Charity Committee

As you are aware, we will be raffling a fabulous 1970 Cooper at the Westrun Gala Dinner. The committee wish to point out that this car is in fact a cooper replica which has been prepared to full cooper specification including a 1275cc engine. Tickets are €20 each and are selling well. The car will be at the following venues where the committee will be selling tickets .Volunteers are required Why not come along, show your support and help to sell some tickets for this worthy cause.

West Cork Vintage Club Summer Run May 18th saw me back in the Holy Ground for the annual West Cork run, this year accompa- nied by Nel and Padraig Giblin. We travelled down on Friday so that we wouldn’t be late. The weather was good on Satur- day except for a monsoon shower at midday. Sunday stayed nice and bright despite the forecast. The Run with about 85 cars left Clonakilty and went through Glandore, Union Hall, Skibbereen and down to Baltimore where we parked up for a few hours and some refreshments. We returned to Dunmore Hotel outside Clonakilty overlooking the bay for dinner where we met an old friend, Pat O’Sullivan who has now passed his 80th birth- day. He is in great form and said he is looking forward to the Westrun and the overnight stay in Clifden. We also look forward to seeing Donal and Mary O’Leary who are great suporters of the Westrun.

WVVMC Historical & Cultural Run 2008

On Sunday 25th May 20 cars headed for Limerick. Our timing had to be right as the victorious Munster team were due in Shannon at noon. We were lucky and got to Limerick ahead of the traffic. We parked in the grounds of King John’s Castle where the cars were looked after for us. It was lovely to meet up with Phil and Margaret Denson who hap- pened to be on holiday in Killarney and came up to join us. Although the service at the Locke Restaurant was slow, the food was generally good. After lunch we went across to the Hunt Museum for which we had allowed 1¼ hours. However, it was not enough time to see all the exhibits and I intend to return to spend a full afternoon there at a later date. As we went to King John’s Castle the Open Top Bus carry- ing the Munster team and the Heineken cup passed by. This really was a bonus for us. When we got into the castle, time was already against us having spent too long at the museum. It Proved a most interesting place with some great exhibits and hopefully the short visit aroused the curiosity for a return in the near future when we have more time.

Limerick Classic & Vintage Car Club Summer Run On Saturday 31st May the Limerick club held their summer run. WVVMC was represented by Michael Spellman with Peggy, the children and myself. The run left the South Court Hotel and went to Tarbert via Adare, Carrigkerry and Athea. In Tarbert we had lunch and after visited the court- house and jail museum which was very interesting. The run was quite small with only about 60 cars participating. I returned home that evening crossing by ferry to Killimer. Michael and family stayed overnight in Limerick and attended the Static Display at Mungret College the following day. Paddy and Mary Fahy, Sean and Anne-Marie Mc Greevey and Peter Murphy all attended the display on Sunday. A most enjoyable weekend! Its always nice to meet up with old friends and make new ones.

Personal Choices……...

We all enjoy giving our cars a really good clean. Part of the vintage ownership pleasure is getting your car looking as pristine as you possibly can. And who can resist that glance at your cars’ reflection in the shop window as you drive by. These days there is a huge selection of sprays, lotions and potions to pamper your cars’ body. Some people (from other clubs!!) neglect their tyre walls leaving them whitish grey which lets down the whole appearance of the car. My personal choice is STP Son of a Gun. I have used this product for years, long before I ever had any interest in Vintage and for my money it beats the socks off the more expensive sprays. It’s widely available, even your local supermarket sells it for less than €7 in a bright yellow plastic bottle. Spray a little of the liquid onto your tyre walls. Work it in with a damp cloth or with your fingers, leave for a minute and buff with a dry cloth for that “jet black” look. If your car has those black plastic bumpers or trim which have gone “grey” this will restore them to Black in seconds. Use it on your modern car also. Never use this on the threaded part of your tyres nor on pedals or steering wheel as it is slippery and will reduce grip. Keep it away from paintwork and glass. Also available from our sponsors CarParts Warehouse!!

1 Trips Abroad By Michael Spellman

Techno Classica in Essen, Germany

Techno Classic is the largest classic car exhibition in Europe which was on from Thursday, the 27th to Sunday, the 30th of March this year. The show is situated in a large convention centre on the outskirts of Essen and it takes up seven large halls there. My brother Raymond and I decided earlier this year to attend as our main interest would be in German made cars. Other marques and countries are well represented, with Jaguar and Triumph from England, Ferrari, Lamborghinis and Alfa Romeos from Italy and Volvos and Citroens from their respective countries.

Mercedes Benz were a main attraction at the show, with the company itself taking up one of the halls. There were representations from their classic car section and the museum. It showed the interest the company had in their heritage and one stand showed the restoration services available. It had a 600 model on a lift at height level so you could see the detail of the work underneath the car. This car was nearing completion – it did not have any interior fitted, but you could see everything before everything was fitted. Also on display, were a 600 chassis and a separate 600 bare shell body showing that everything is done. The museum section showed in these frugal times, the advances that they made with fuel consumption with diesel models (including a diesel version of my old car). They also showed the latest bluematic technology where cars will switch off when stopped in traffic etc. Mercedes clubs were also represented – where there were separate clubs for each model. Other car makes were displayed in other halls. In one hall, Volkswagen were set up with some of their associated brands (they being Seat and Bentley). It’s now 30 years since the introduction of the original Scirocco model and they had a stand dedicated to them. Audi with the other associated brands were in another hall. Again, time to celebrate an anniversary, as it’s 25 years since the original Quattro model. Various coupes were displayed including the shortened rally version. Skoda were also on display in this hall, showing models from the 1930’s. It shows how far we have all moved on from the Skoda jokes.

Porsche were also well represented where they showed cars from their racing heritage – cars that took part in Le Mans etc. A number of specialists attended providing services from rebuilding en- gines and race preparing your car to restoring you car to it’s original (or better) condition. BMW were in another hall, where they were also cele- brating – the 30th anniversary of the original 5 series. Only for they didn’t provide the booze – we would still be there! Continued next page…..

1 There is so much to see – that this article cannot do it justice. There were many stands selling parts, memorabilia and there were cars for sale and for auction. But it’s worth going to see it.

How to get there;

We flew with Aer Lingus from Dublin, on a 7am flight to Dusseldorf. Just outside the airport, we got a taxi for a twenty minute drive to the exhibition, which cost us €30. There is an eve- ning flight at 8pm from Dusseldorf back to Dublin – so you could do it in a day, if you are feeling energetic! We flew out on the Friday morning and we came back on the Saturday. With the early start on the Friday, we went up the night before and stayed at one of the hotels at Dublin airport.

Run Report - Meals after Wheels Run By Michael Spellman

On Sunday, the 13th of April last we held our Meals after Wheels run. We met up at the Statoil petrol station in Oranmore. Other motorists who were pulling in for petrol and the paper came over to see what was going on and we became an attraction ourselves. It was raining at the time, but it soon dried up to be a nice sunny afternoon. We headed out the N18 towards Gort, and turned off for Kinvara at Kilcolgan. We met up with Ray O’Donoghue and John Downes and they joined us for the rest of the run. We passed by Dungaire Castle and into Kinvara where we stopped for a quick break. It seemed early in the year, but you could see a number of tourists visiting the castle and the town. Kinvara is a popular spot with a great views of its harbour and the surrounding area. Then onto Ardrahan and Craughwell. Along the way we crossed over the Limerick Galway railway line where you could see the work progressing on bringing the line back to use again. I think it is due back in service sometime next year. We were now on the N6 Dublin Road, but we took the next right for Athenry. We finished at the Raheen Woods Hotel, were we sat down to a four course meal. The choice was beef or salmon. The food was very good and there was plenty of it. There were discussions about a certain wrong turn, someone getting lost and looking forward to the next run. Overall, everyone enjoyed the day and it marked the start of future summer runs.

1 Blast from the past By Ian Doherty

This is a newspaper cutting from the

Connacht Tribune in

1952 advertising the new Somerset.

Produced for just two

years it replaced the A40 Devon and was similar in

that it was of “body on chassis” construction and used the same 1.2 litre straight 4, pushrod engine which had been updated however to produce 42BHP giving the Somerset a 71mph top speed. It had a bench front seat and column gear change to the 4 speed box having synchromesh on 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Originally only a 4 door saloon but a two door and also a convertible were later offered, built by of Coventry. These differed from the four door in that they had separate front seats which could fold forward allowing access to the rear. Notice that a heater and demister was an optional extra at £9. Note also the “bearded lady” advertisement below for Mrs Martin offering to remove superfluous hair, moles or warts painlessly for ever. She believed in her product so strongly that she offered to donate £1000 to charity should a customer not be satisfied. Given that this is almost twice the cost of the abovementioned car, one can’t help wondering how much she donated before going out of business. 1 West Cork, Limerick and Historical Runs
