Bank Holiday Mon 27 August OLDTIMER RALLY 2018 Bank Holiday Mon 27 August www.oldtimer.uk.com CHAIRMAN SECRETARY Michael Stainer Mrs Eileen Watling The Grand Lynsted Cottage The Leas Farthing Common Folkestone Lyminge CT20 2XL UK CT18 8DH UK +44 (0)1303 222 200 +44 (0)1303 863 509 [email protected] [email protected] For a change, we did have an airshow this year, on 22nd July, or should one say a ‘fly by’ to celebrate the centenary of the RAF; we had an impromptu car rally on the gloriously hot and dry day - at its peak there were 73 cars on site at 3pm, and a spectacularly large crown of onlookers - in goodly part no doubt for the cars, as the fly by comprised at 1:15pm a Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane, and at 5pm the Red Arrows - that was certainly spectacular and well worth waiting for. Our ‘Grand Oldtimers Car Club’, meeting on the second Wednesday of the month at The Grand, now has 60 members , with 15-20 coming to the monthly meets and a group attending many of the car rallies mainly in Kent during the summer season. Other ideas are in contemplation, particularly being able to advise on local businesses for maintenance and restoration work. The club has provided the judges for today’s event; we do, however, rely on you and our visitors to vote for the car you would most like to take home with you - voting slips are available from HQ at the top of The Grand’s Palm Court steps from 2pm, with the final count being made just before the prize giving at 3.30pm. One new development this year is a better public address system, provided locally by Alex Savage who set up on his own here and has already acquired some prestigious jobs. This includes a roving microphone facility, which will enable commentary to be given from anywhere on the rally site. With this in mind, it is proposed that instead of marshalling cars in front of the Palm Court for prizegiving, the prizes will be delivered to the prizewinners - so we thank the Folkestone Town Mayor, Cllr Ann Berry, in advance for what is to be a rather more energetic event than hitherto. As ever, we are greatly indebted to Eileen Watling, the rally secretary, who has dealt with all the entries and resulting paperwork. She is, regrettably, housebound looking after her husband Alfie who nowadays is bedbound. This year your chairman’s daughter Julianna is masterminding the arrival arrangements as her big sister is away in Germany on her uni engineering work experience, assisted by a small team of Oldtimer members supplemented by local Rotarians and Grand residents. And it’s his wife Doris that operates the website where you may be reading this. Folkestone Town Council has again contributed to the cost of the prizes and plaques; Shepway, now known as Folkestone & Hythe District Council, maintains The Leas with its finely mown grass, the police permit the road closure, Kent County Council allows the display of our posters around the district - and not least a thank you to KMFM that sponsors us with both press and radion coverage. FIND A DEALERSHIP OVERVIEW SUMMARY DEFENDER CELEBRATION SERIES FIND A DEALERSHIP OVERVIEW SUMMARY LAND ROVER DEFENDER CELEBRATION SERIES For some 67 years, The Land Rover – rechristened Defender in 1990 – has crisscrossed the globe like no other vehicle. It has traversed terrains others simply could only dream of. It has forged lasting partnerships with such organisations as the Red Cross and Royal Geographical Society and has proved itself against all-comers on such gruelling challenges as the Dakar Rally. Now this iconic part of our history is set to continue with three Limited Edition vehicles being produced to celebrate its life. FIND A DEALERSHIP OVERVIEW SUMMARY Land Rover Defender’s boundless capability has taken it to all four corners of the earth. For instance, back in 1955, it was the first vehicle in the world to go overland from London to Singapore. It has worked in territories as diverse as Africa and Alaska. It has proved to be the most robust and unrelenting workhorse on farms, in jungles and deserts, delivered time after time in such industries as mining and engineering. Its heritage is without question. Its legacy, without equal. Top left and right: © British Motor Industry Heritage Trust. Bottom left: © Nick Dimbleby Photographer. Not only for agreeing to be my mentor throughout my honors senior project, but for also suggesting valid points to make within my essay and final PowerPoint presentation that would better my research. I appreciate Professor Lillie for taking the time out of his schedule to meet with me during his office hours to discuss ideas and interesting facts that would be essential to crafting my essay. I would also like to recognize my cousin Neleze Meadows for helping me in narrowing down my broad topic to solely focusing on the evolution of Ford auto-motives. My cousin helped me chose an automobile company that has had the biggest transformation from beginning to end, and is continuously still growing in the 21st century. With the help of both my mentor Professor Lillie and my cousin Neleze Meadows, once again thank you for your input towards devising my Honors Mayor College senior project. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS Abstract..........................................................................................................................................

WESSEX VEHICLE PRESERVATION CLUB FOUNDED 1971 www.wvpc.org.uk ‘WESSEX WAYS’ FEBRUARY 2020 VEHICLE OF THE MONTH The Austin Cambridge (sold as A40, A50, A55, and A60) is a motor car range produced by the Austin Motor Company, in several generations, from September 1954 through to 1971 as cars and to 1973 as light commercials. It replaced the A40 Somerset and was entirely new, with modern unibody construction. The range had two basic body styles with the A40, A50, and early A55 using a traditional rounded shape and later A55 Mark IIs and A60s using Pininfarina styling. The A40 number was re-used on a smaller car (the Austin A40 Farina) from 1958 to 1968, and the Cambridge name had previously been used to designate one of the available body styles on the pre-war 10 hp range. The Austin Cambridge was initially offered only with a four-passenger, four-door saloon body, although a few pre-production two-door models were also made. It had a modern body design with integrated wings and a full-width grille. Independent suspension was provided at the front by coil springs and wishbones while a live axle with anti-roll bar was retained at the rear. A van derivative introduced in November 1956 and a coupé utility (pick up) introduced in May 1957 and remained available until 1974, some three years after the demise of the cars on which they had been based. A40 CAMBRIDGE A 1.2-litre straight-four pushrod engine B-Series engine based on the one used in the previous Austin Somerset (although sharing no parts) powered the new Austin Cambridge.
