It looks at the causes of stability and instability of corporatist systems and their institutions and how these maintain membership and organizational coherence. The study explores the reconstruction strategies of two contrasted West German trade unions seeking to maintain their organizational position and to protect the neo-corporatist industrial relations system that secures their survival. Their strategies for the organizational survival of the unions are determined partly by the neo-corporatist industrial relations structure and partly by their different organizational constraints. The first section looks at explanations of how encompassing trade unions in a neo-corporatist system maintain their membership and their organizational coherence. After delineating the various incentives which encompassing trade unions provide to their membership, the study examines the threats posed by the disintegration of the GDR to the provision of union services and thus to their ability to attract members. The effects of the collapse of the GDR could reduce their membership's willingness to define interests in collective terms (i.e. a favourable trade-off between inflation and unemployment). The study then examines the objectives for an intervention by the West German trade unions in the GDR in order to secure neo corporatism by incorporation of the East German membership within the encompassing body of the West German unions. The second section looks at the main determinants of the reconstruction process which have been the legacy of low trust in former East German industrial relations as well as the e d g e 's inadequate efforts which facilitated the intervention by the West German trade unions in the form of incorporation. The third section assesses the motives of two West German trade unions related to the reconstruction strategies of free labour representation in the GDR. Both trade unions followed the strategy of incorporating the East German workforce by narrowing the existing East-West wage gap (contractual exchange) as well as offering solidarity (diffuse exchange). In particular the motive of contractual exchange reveals the unions' desire to maintain stability within the neo-corporatist environment. As the research on corporatism rarely examines the causes of stability of corporatist systems and institutions, this thesis makes a contribution to our understanding of the strategies to maintain corporatist structures. The sudden collapse of the GDR, with its repercussions for the ERG, provides a special opportunity to analyse the strategy of corporatist institutions seeking to maintain stability. Acknowledaements The research in this thesis was made possible through the helpful comments on earlier drafts of the chapters and other advice by the members of the Industrial Relations Department at the LSE. Particularly helpful and influential were David Marsden's critical advice and guidance. Finally, the.support and encouragement of Gisela and Anubis were invaluable throughout. Abstract The following thesis looks at the subject of communist-oriented opposition in the GDR. More specifically, it considers how this phenomenon has been reconstructed in the state-mandated memory landscape of the Federal Republic of Germany since unification in 1990. It does so by presenting three case studies of particular representative value. The first looks at the former member of the Politbüro Paul Merker and how his entanglement in questions surrounding antifascism and antisemitism in the 1950s has become a significant trope in narratives of national (de-)legitimisation since 1990. The second delves into the phenomenon of the dissident through the aperture of prominent singer-songwriter, Wolf Biermann, who was famously exiled in 1976.

Integration: The ulturC al Politics Of Migration And Nation In The ewN German Public Abstract This dissertation examines public discourse on culture and integration and asks how do mediated public discussions about integration reproduce norms of national culture and identity that operate to represent and manage “Other” (immigrant, minority, etc.) populations in the German context? Through a case study approach, this dissertation uses critical discourse theory to analyze public campaigns, media events, and mediated controversies since the mid-2000s that sought to define the qualifications for cultural citizenship. Although in recent years an increasing number of publications have addressed Germany’s diverse and transnational population, examinations of processes and policies of integration have tended to focus either on the level of the government or on the level of everyday life. Although ideas about integration and multiculturalism are predominantly forged through events and the surrounding representations in the media, the mid-level processes of the media sphere have been neglected in scholarship.

Umschlag_Wirth_Mining_165x235_4c_Layout 1 10.05.12 12:06 Seite 1 This volume is about post-mining regions in Central Europe, where people have taken up Peter Wirth, Barbara erni Mali, the challenge of overcoming the crisis provoked by the cessation of mining. Although the Wolfgang Fischer (Editors)Č č situation in these regions is mostly difficult, the book is not about decline and desperation. It is about concepts and strategies for shaping new perspectives at the beginning of the 21st century. It is about people who envisage new leisure attractions where excavators left a lunar landscape a few years ago, who create new technology centres on the sites of aban- doned processing plants, and who plan to extract clean energy from mine-water flowing Post-Mining Regions hundreds of meters under the surface; people intent on exploiting so-called »post-mining potentials« – the central topic of this volume. Mali, (Editors) Fischer W. After more than three years of common research, a group of scientists from Austria, the č in Central Europe Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, and Slovenia present an overview of the current erni Č situation and development perspectives in seven post-mining regions of Central Europe. They show that sustainable post-mining development is a highly relevant subject in our times. Problems, Potentials, Possibilities Despite the innumerable problems, a positive conclusion can be drawn: change is possible, and cooperation across the borders of European countries can contribute to its success.
