What great winter weather and an early warm spring we have experienced here at the Hammond Marina. We look forward to another summer filled with hot days and exciting weekends. The professional office staff is excited about the start of the season serving the slip holders as we provide the best experience in boating here on the Southern Shores of Lake Michigan. The economy affects each one of us daily blending decisions and the choices we make as to how we spend our money. Your suggestions, discussions and thoughts are always welcome. Thank you to the 129 boaters that participated in the 2011 Boater Survey. Some interesting facts I wish to share include: 1.) From Marina Director, Bill Hill, CMM

Spring is here and with great anticipation another boating season begins. I’d like to welcome back our returning boaters and thank you for your continued patronage. I hope you also took advantage of the renewal discount and found it beneficial. The Marina Advisory Committee will again be meeting this year. The first meeting will be on the last Saturday in May and the last Saturday of each month thereafter. We need a volunteer from each dock or group of docks to continue the success in opening the lines of communication between management and the boating community. The ships store is stocked with new clothing offering lots of color for this spring and summer. The Marine clearance center is also returning this year with some great bargains. Please stop in and enjoy. We will be adding some additional hours for the ships store and fuel dock to make it more convenient for our boaters. Please stay tuned for more details. I hope everyone has a fun and safe boating season and I look forward to seeing you around the Marina and Club.

From the Harbormaster, Keith Carey

The marina will be trying something new this year in that we are offering, through the United States Power Squadrons, Practical On-the-Water Training. This will be a one day, 8 hours seminar which involves 4 hours of classroom training and 4 hours of practice behind the wheel of a . This is a great opportunity for those new to boating to become more comfortable and EDUCATED in boating. Please call the office for more information. Safety is so important, especially in boating. As we start a new boating season, please be observant and cognizant of those around you and help us to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment by following the rules and regulations at our Marina. I’m looking forward to a great summer!

Speaking of Safety, I thought you might be interested in the following article:

MANDATORY PDF’S The National Boating Safety Advisory Council voted to have the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) initiate a process that would lead to mandatory life jacket wear. This gave USCG the green light to gather public input on the concept of mandatory wear of a personal flotation device (PFD) and also look at how such a rule would be implemented and enforced. This issue will continue to make headlines in 2012, unless USCG determines this idea should be tabled. The marine industry is asking that USCG conduct meaningful public outreach and receive com- ments, instead of simply posting the idea in the Federal Register and hope people find it. In addition, the marine industry is throwing its support behind safety and life jacket wear educational programs, which the industry believes will cause wear rates to naturally rise. The vast majority of the marine industry supports the education of boaters and mandatory wear for children under 12 and for those on personal watercraft but believe the decision for adults to wear a life jacket should remain a choice.
