Archives Looking for a Home: The Cultural Heritage of the Estonian Diaspora in the Estonian Literary Museum Piret Noorhani, Merike Kiipus, Anu Korb Estonian Literary Museum The Estonian Literary Museum (Eesti Kirjandusmuuseum) – at the moment, a state research and development institution – is historically a colony of three archives: the Archival Library (Arhiivraamatukogu, AR, established in 1909), the Estonian Folklore Archives (Eesti Rahvaluule Arhiiv, ERA, 1927), and the Estonian Cultural History Archives (Eesti Kultuurilooline Arhiiv, EKLA, 1929). The archives were born within the Estonian National Museum with the aim to collect publications, folklore and cultural documents in Estonian and about Estonia. This is the task the archives have performed since their establishment – irrespective of the changing systems of government, the formal status of the institution, and the generations of its employees. As a result of continuous work, the archives of the Literary Museum have a wide and versatile collection of material on the history of the Estonian diaspora; the present article can give only a superficial survey. As to the Archival Library and the Cultural History Archives, we limit ourselves to the cultural heritage of the Estonians who fled to the West after World War II, while with the Folklore Archives we include – and concentrate on – the material of the Estonians in the East. This refers to the priorities of different archives in collecting and researching their material, but also to future considerations. The Archival Library Collection and Partners The oldest archives of the Literary Museum, the Archival Library established in 1909, includes material concerning Estonians in the East and Baltica collected since the early 20th century. -

Matthias Alexander Castrén Matthias Alexander Matt hias Alexander Castrén (1813–1852) was by far the most signifi cant Finn- ish linguist of the 19th century. In addition to being a linguist he was also a multidisciplinary scholar, equally versatile in the fi elds of ethnography, folklore, mythology, archaeology, history, and human geography. He left behind a huge corpus of fi eld data, collected by himself during prolonged expeditions to Kare- lia, Lapland, Arctic Russia, and Siberia between 1838 and 1849. In the short peri- ods of time Castrén spent in an academic environment, he had litt le opportunity to synthesize his collections, a situation aggravated by his rapidly progressing and ultimately fatal illness. Th erefore, a major part of his scholarly heritage re- mained unpublished when he died. Castrén was appointed Docent of Finnish and Ancient Nordic Languages and Tribes at the Imperial Alexander University in Helsinki in 1841, and ten years later he became the fi rst Professor of the Finnish Language. M.A. Castrén considered ethnology as a historical science and an instru- ment for describing the early periods of Finnish history. On his expeditions, he carried out ethnographic observations and took notes of the dwellings, cos- tumes, way of life, and customs of indigenous Siberian peoples. According to the programme draft ed by the Imperial Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences, Collectiones museorum Castrén collected ethnological artifacts for the Ethnographic Museum in Saint Petersburg, and some items for the Ethnographic Museum of the University of Helsinki. Th e present work concentrates on the collections which describe Castrén’s merits in ethnological studies and museology. -

In historical writing, the distinctive character of the Soviet era appears as a distinctive set of ideas, situations, and even human types, the latter embodying the realisation of the didactic Konstantin Bogdanov. But from the philological standpoint what is equally (or: primarily) distinctive is the communicative discourse that served Soviet ideology: new words, new texts, new forms of social interaction (including media forms). The scale of linguistic innovation in the Soviet era is best expressed in the diversity of so-called ‘Sovietisms’ in semantics, in lexis and word formation, and in style – the words and phrases that lend their characteristic colour to texts of a public or political nature.1 But the role of lexical and semantic innovations that were called for by the novelty and distinctiveness of the political reality looks broader, in historical and cultural retrospect, than the sphere of political ideolect. Putting Words in Their Mouths: Russian Byliny as 83 Discursive Space Putting Words in Their Mouths: Russian Byliny as Discursive Space Kate Christine Moore Koppy Marymount University and the University of the District of Columbia Community College Arlington, Virginia, United States of America Abstract This article follows the Melnitsa Animation Studio into the imagined medieval space of their bogatyr films. With particular focus on Melnitsa’s use of the Il’ia Muromets corpus in Илья Муромец и Соловей Разбойник [Il’ia and the Robber], we consider the complex set of conflicts among characters and ideas that reflect concepts of identity and social issues in contemporary Russia. In moments of cultural unrest, adaptations of canonical stories serve as a discursive space for the community to redefine itself. In the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries, the byliny [western Slavic heroic epics] have functioned as tools of cultural cohesion at critical moments of national self-redefinition. Most recently, the Студия анимационного кино Мельница [Melnitsa Animation Studio] (1) has adapted the byliny into animated films for children, in which stories of medieval princes, heroes, and villains become a discursive space for the exploration of social issues in the post-Soviet Russian Federation. Melnitsa’s 2007 film Il’ia and the Robber is the most recent example in a steady stream of adaptation and retelling of byliny from the time they were first printed to the present. Along that timeline, there are three moments in which adaptations flourish, and each of these coincides with a crucial moment of redefinition of Russian culture. The nineteenth century recording of these heroic epics, which adapts them from dynamic oral epics to written texts (2), was part of the wave of romantic nationalism that drove scholars across Europe to gather folkloric material as the feudal city-states of the medieval period coalesced into more stable nations. -

Erkki Pekkilä C.A. GOTTLUND JA KANSANMUSIIKKI Jos halutaan tutkia kansanmusiikin historiaa, voidaan menetellä kahdella tavalla. Voidaan etsiä uusia dokumentteja, jotka valaisisivat sitä mistä ei tähän asti ole tiedetty tai voidaan turvautua vanhoihin dokumentteihin mutta tulkita niitä uudelleen, antaa niille uusia merkityksiä. Valittiin kumpi tie hyvänsä, molemmat vaativat dokumentteja - nuotteja, käsi kirjoituksia, piirroksia, maalauksia, valokuvia, äänitteitä - sillä doku mentit luovat pohjan niille väittärnille, joita menneisyyden tapahtumista tehdään. Ellei ole dokumentteja, ei myöskään ole perusteita väittämille ja ellei ole perusteita, ei ole historiallista "totuutta". Ilman dokumentteja historiasta voidaan esittää vain arvailuja, mikä sitten taas ei ole histo riankiIjoitusta; tällaisilla arveluilla on pelkästään mielipidearvo. Kansanmusiikin paradoksi on, että se ei jätä itsestään dokumentteja. "Aito" kansanmusiikki eli kansanmusiikki sellaisena, miksi se sanakirja määritelmissä käsitetään, on muistinvaraista perinnettä. Muistinvarainen perinne taas on häviävää: ellei sitä tallenneta, sen olemassaolo lakkaa. Tietysti perinnetuotteen olemassaolo saattaa jatkua sillä että se välittyy sukupolvelta toiselle. Samalla tuote kuitenkin kokee muutoksia, eikä nykyhetkenä kerätyn tuotteen iästä ja historiasta voida esittää muuta kuin arveluja. Jälkipolvien onneksi kansanmusiikkia kuitenkin on tallennettu: kansansävelmiä on kerätty, soittimia säilötty museoihin, kansanmusiikin harjoittamisesta kirjoitettu kuvauksia, soittajia valokuvattu.
