2018-2019 Newsletter The YDA by the Numbers: Another Outstanding Year The Yale Debate Association continued to dominate both at 1 home and abroad this year. The The YDA’s US team snagged its tenth consecutive Ranking Club of the Year Award and broke three teams and five judges at the World Universities Debating Championships among a long list 10 of its other stellar accomplishments Years in a Row from this year. as Top US Team The team excelled once more at APDA Nationals, with one team reaching semifinals, and one team reaching quarterfinals. By stay- ing on top of the ranks throughout the season, Yale also keep its COTY status for the tenth year in a row, leading second place team 8 Harvard by over 40 points. Tournaments Won Yale also performed strongly at WUDC. Three of five teams broke to elimination rounds, with Yale B reaching quarterfinals, and Yale A and Yale C both reaching double-octafinals. All five Yale-affiliat- 5 ed judges also judge broke. Top Speaker Awards The YDA had another oustanding year, and is looking forward to the next! Excellence at APDA Nationals The YDA had another incredible year at APDA Nationals. Eleven 11 team members qualified, and five Debaters teams competed at Nationals, Qualified to including two novices. Yale's Nationals competitors performed very well. Three debaters earned top twenty speaker awards: Will Arnesen ('20), also 10th Speaker of the Year, was 2nd speaker, Ellie Singer ('21) was 6th speaker, and Jack Kelly ('21) was 16th speaker. Two teams also broke to elimination rounds. -

Foreign Policy Analysis is a well-defined subfield within the International Relations field, with its own sections in the International Studies Association and American Political Science Association (Foreign Policy Analysis and Foreign Policy, respectively). Our orientation in this course is more theoretical and process-oriented than substantive or interpretive. We focus on policy inputs and the decision-making process rather than on policy outputs. An important assumption underlying this course is that the processes through which foreign policy is made have a considerable impact on the substantive content of policy. We follow a loose a levels-of-analysis framework to organize our survey of the theoretical literature on foreign policy. We examine rational state actor, bureaucratic/ organizational, institutional, societal, and psychological models. We look at the government decision-makers, organizations, political parties, private interests, social groups, and mass publics that have an impact on foreign policy. We analyze the various constraints within which each of these sets of actors must operate, the nature of their interactions with each other and with the society as a whole, and the processes and mechanisms through which they resolve their differences and formulate policy. Although most (but not all) of our reading is written by Americans and although much of it deals primarily with American foreign policy, most of these conceptual frameworks are much more general and not restricted to the United States. -

Theories of International Relations* Ole R. Holsti Universities and professional associations usually are organized in ways that tend to separate scholars in adjoining disciplines and perhaps even to promote stereotypes of each other and their scholarly endeavors. The seemingly natural areas of scholarly convergence between diplomatic historians and political scientists who focus on international relations have been underexploited, but there are also some signs that this may be changing. These include recent essays suggesting ways in which the two disciplines can contribute to each other; a number of prizewinning dissertations, later turned into books, by political scientists that effectively combine political science theories and historical materials; collaborative efforts among scholars in the two disciplines; interdisciplinary journals such as International Security that provide an outlet for historians and political scientists with common interests; and creation of a new section, “International History and Politics,” within the American Political Science Association.1 *The author has greatly benefited from helpful comments on earlier versions of this essay by Peter Feaver, Alexander George, Joseph Grieco, Michael Hogan, Kal Holsti, Bob Keohane, Timothy Lomperis, Roy Melbourne, James Rosenau, and Andrew Scott, and also from reading 1 K. This essay is an effort to contribute further to an exchange of ideas between the two disciplines by describing some of the theories, approaches, and "models" political scientists have used in their research on international relations during recent decades. A brief essay cannot do justice to the entire range of theoretical approaches that may be found in the current literature, but perhaps those described here, when combined with citations of some representative works, will provide diplomatic historians with a useful, if sketchy, map showing some of the more prominent landmarks in a neighboring discipline. -

Birmingham, UK. Email: [email protected] They are therefore also uniquely capable of channelling a performer's sense of his own failure. The 1987 film Withnail &Ifamously ends with its title character, an out‐of‐work actor and self‐destructive alcoholic, delivering Hamlet's “What a piece of work is a man” to an audience of unre- sponsive wolves. And in 2014's The Trip to Italy, Steve Coogan plays a fictionalised version of himself: a comedian who fears he will never be remembered as a serious artist. On a visit to Pompeii, Coogan's delivery of Hamlet's speech to Yorick's skull similarly becomes a way of channelling the series's wider reflections on fame, mortality, and the value of the actor's art. Drawing on Marvin Carlson's argument that the role of Hamlet is unusually densely ghosted by its previous occupants, this article will explore how these two contemporary depictions of struggling performers evoke the received idea of the great Shakespearean role as the pinnacle of the actor's art to respond to the dilemma of how to cope with creative failure. -

The scale of linguistic innovation in the Soviet era is best expressed in the diversity of so-called ‘Sovietisms’ in semantics, in lexis and word formation, and in style – the words and phrases that lend their characteristic colour to texts of a public or political nature.1 But the role of lexical and semantic innovations that were called for by the novelty and distinctiveness of the political reality looks broader, in historical and cultural retrospect, than the sphere of political ideolect.
