Yaroslav Gorbachov Assistant Professor of Linguistics, Department of Linguistics, University of Chicago [email protected] Abstract As attested, the Slavic pantheon is rather well-populated. However, many of its nu- merous members are known only by their names mentioned in passing in one or two medieval documents. Among those barely attested Slavic deities, there are a few whose very existence may be doubted. This does not deter some scholars from articulating rather elaborate theories about Slavic mythology and cosmology. The article discusses two obscure Slavic deities, “Black God” and “White God,” and, in particular, reexamines the extant primary sources on them. It is argued that “Black God” worship was limited to the Slavic North-West, and “White God” never existed. Keywords Chernobog – Belbog – Belbuck – Tjarnaglófi – Vij – Slavic dualism Introduction A discussion of Slavic mythology and pantheons is always a difficult, risky, and thankless business. There is no dearth of gods to talk about. In the literature they are discussed with confidence and, at times, some bold conclusions about Slavic cosmology are made, based on the sheer fact of the existence of a par- ticular deity. In reality, however, many of the “known” Slavic gods are not much more than a bare theonym mentioned once or twice in what often is a late, un- reliable, or poorly interpretable document. The available evidence is undeni- ably scanty and the dots to be connected are spaced far apart. Yugoslavism and the Bulgarians in the Nineteenth Century the Idea

Yugoslavism and the Bulgarians in the Nineteenth Century The idea for the formation of a South Slav or Yugoslav Union, of a Balkan or an in Danubian Federation or Confederation, occupied important place the thinking and ' activity of a number of Bulgarian intellectuals and statesmen. Moreover, this idea was one of the aims toward which the organized Bulgarian national liberation movement strove. This essay endeavors to trace and to analyze the history of the Yugoslav Idea among the Bulgarians during the nineteenth century. The most important facts in the history of the interrelationships between the South Slavic peoples in the modern period relate to their efforts to preserve and develop their national consciousness and culture from assimilation, to free themselves from foreign domination, and to form independent states. It was in the process of the struggle for liberation that an awareness of the necessity for unity of the South Slavs arose and common practical steps were taken toward this end. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, foreign domination ahd time itself had, in great measure, obliterated the old ethnic enmities and rivalries which existed among the South Slavs during medieval times. The common fate and ordeal of these peoples for more than four hundred years contributed to the appearance of feelings of mutual sym- pathy and help among them. Until the end of the eighteenth century, the Bulgarian and Serbian peoples believed that liberation from the Ottomans could be achieved only with foreign help. At the same time we find the beginning of a number of attempts among them to unite in a common struggle for liberation.1 In the Serbian struggle for national liberation, not only Bulgarians living in Serbian lands but also a great number of volunteers from Bulgaria actively particpated in the struggle against the common enemy. -

If one can judge from his statement, underage Gavrilo Princip, like so many of his peers, was foremost convinced that South Slavs should be liberated from a foreign yoke and unite in their own state; this belief was strongly though not articulately mixed with another conviction that the world about to come must be the world of profound social transformation. Two motives with which our story of ‘one hundred years of citizenship’ begins will be repeated in many different forms during this century: should South Slavs have their own common state? Or form separate ones? And, regardless of the answer, should political transformations entail more social equality or only a change of the rulers at the top of the existing hierarchy? Every idea often has deep roots and various historic materializations. -
Slavic Folk Beliefs Regarding the Spots of the Moon
ON THE METHODS OF CONSTRUCTING A MYTHOLOGICAL TEXT: SLAVIC FOLK BELIEFS REGARDING THE SPOTS OF THE MOON Aleksandr Gura Abstract: The dark spots visible on the surface of the full Moon have been diversely interpreted in the Slavic folk calendar, with a partial overlapping being noted upon the consolidation of relevant thematic groups. The article provides an overview regarding the explanations, concerning the origin of lunar spots, widespread among the Slavic people. The comparative analysis of the Slavic narratives on lunar spots indicates the distribution of the text into dif- ferent morphological elements, enables the ascertaining of mutual correlations and combinations, and shows how they are being used to “assemble”, construct texts in different regional traditions, determining the “grammatical” structure of the mythological text as a whole. Key words: mythology, lunar spots, Slavic folklore Different interpretations, within the Slavic folk calendar, attributed to the dark spots visible on the surface of the full Moon, can be consolidated into several partially overlapping thematic groups. ASSOCIATION OF LUNAR SPOTS WITH DIRTINESS The first group of interpretations (mainly among the Bulgarians, and partially among the Macedonians and Croatians) is associated with cows and cow dung. Pursuant to such explanations, the stains on the Moon are either a cow with a large udder (Mazneva 1946: 109) or a pear tree emptied of the fruit by God’s cow which thereafter became a Moon (ArhEIM 879-II: 72). Most frequently, however, the stains are the traces of a cowpat or ox faeces. The Moon thrown on the earth by a witch had stained itself in the cowpat excreted by a cow passing the Moon (ArhEIM 881-II: 108), or the cowpat was thrown on to the Moon in order for the latter not to shine as brightly. -

The symbol’s broad ability to personify tragic events created a versatile system of imagery that transcended its folkloric derivations into the realm of Russian literature, becoming a constant literary device from eighteenth century to post-Soviet fiction. The vampire’s literary usage arose during and after the reign of Catherine the Great and continued into each politically turbulent time that followed. The authors examined in this thesis, Afanasiev, Gogol, Bulgakov, and Lukyanenko, each depicted the issues and internal turmoil experienced in Russia during their respective times. By employing the common mythos of the vampire, the issues suggested within the literature are presented indirectly to the readers giving literary life to pressing societal dilemmas. The purpose of this thesis is to ascertain the vampire’s function within Russian literary societal criticism by first identifying the shifts in imagery in the selected Russian vampiric works, then examining how the shifts relate to the societal changes of the different time periods. -

Quave3,4* ABSTRACT Local natural resources play an important role in securing human health in the Balkans, particularly as a source of food and medicine. The aims of this study were to document the ethnomedical practices of Slavic speaking groups in South Kosovo and to compare these findings to other studies conducted in the Western Balkans. Field research was conducted over a series of trips in 2014. Semistructured interviews in which respondents were asked to list local taxa used for food and/or medicine were conducted in six communities located in the municipalities of Prizren and Dragash. Prior informed consent was obtained and 91 people were interviewed. Voucher specimens of cited wild flora and fungi were collected and deposited in duplicate at the herbaria of the University of Prishtina (Kosovo) and Emory University (USA). A total of 1,050 use citations were recorded for the various uses of 119 species (4 fungi and 115 plants) for food and/or medicine. Additionally, the ethnomedical uses of 27 ingredients of animal, mineral or industrial origin were also documented. The greatest number of citations were for dermatological and food uses of local plants. The most common families reported were Rosaceae (18 species cited), Lamiaceae (16) and Asteraceae (10). Informant consensus regarding category of use was highest (Fic ≥ 0.85) for the categories of oral health, dermatological, and otolaryngological applications. -

THE NEW “OLD COUNTRY” THE KINGDOM OF YUGOSLAVIA AND THE CREATION OF A YUGOSLAV DIASPORA 1914-1951 BY ETHAN LARSON DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2020 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Maria Todorova, Chair Professor Peter Fritzsche Professor Diane Koenker Professor Ulf Brunnbauer, University of Regensburg ABSTRACT This dissertation reviews the Kingdom of Yugoslavia’s attempt to instill “Yugoslav” national consciousness in its overseas population of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, as well as resistance to that same project, collectively referred to as a “Yugoslav diaspora.” Diaspora is treated as constructed phenomenon based on a transnational network between individuals and organizations, both emigrant and otherwise. In examining Yugoslav overseas nation-building, this dissertation is interested in the mechanics of diasporic networks—what catalyzes their formation, what are the roles of international organizations, and how are they influenced by the political context in the host country. The life of Louis Adamic, who was a central figure within this emerging network, provides a framework for this monograph, which begins with his arrival in the United States in 1914 and ends with his death in 1951. Each chapter spans roughly five to ten years. Chapter One (1914-1924) deals with the initial encounter between Yugoslav diplomats and emigrants. Chapter Two (1924-1929) covers the beginnings of Yugoslav overseas nation-building. Chapter Three (1929-1934) covers Yugoslavia’s shift into a royal dictatorship and the corresponding effect on its emigration policy.
