LARSON-DISSERTATION-2020.Pdf THE NEW “OLD COUNTRY” THE KINGDOM OF YUGOSLAVIA AND THE CREATION OF A YUGOSLAV DIASPORA 1914-1951 BY ETHAN LARSON DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2020 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Maria Todorova, Chair Professor Peter Fritzsche Professor Diane Koenker Professor Ulf Brunnbauer, University of Regensburg ABSTRACT This dissertation reviews the Kingdom of Yugoslavia’s attempt to instill “Yugoslav” national consciousness in its overseas population of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, as well as resistance to that same project, collectively referred to as a “Yugoslav diaspora.” Diaspora is treated as constructed phenomenon based on a transnational network between individuals and organizations, both emigrant and otherwise. In examining Yugoslav overseas nation-building, this dissertation is interested in the mechanics of diasporic networks—what catalyzes their formation, what are the roles of international organizations, and how are they influenced by the political context in the host country. The life of Louis Adamic, who was a central figure within this emerging network, provides a framework for this monograph, which begins with his arrival in the United States in 1914 and ends with his death in 1951. Each chapter spans roughly five to ten years. Chapter One (1914-1924) deals with the initial encounter between Yugoslav diplomats and emigrants. Chapter Two (1924-1929) covers the beginnings of Yugoslav overseas nation-building. Chapter Three (1929-1934) covers Yugoslavia’s shift into a royal dictatorship and the corresponding effect on its emigration policy. Chapter Four (1929-1939) deals exclusively with political parties from Yugoslavia that aspired to organize overseas Yugoslav subjects. Chapter Five (1934-1941) deals with Yugoslav overseas nation building and cultural outreach after King Alexander’s death. Chapter Six (1941-1945) covers the formation of a Yugoslav diaspora organization, the United Committee of South Slavic Americans, during the Second World War. Lastly, Chapter Seven (1945-1951) covers the disintegration of the Yugoslav diaspora in Cold War Era America. This dissertation draws five major conclusions. First, there was, for a period in history, a “Yugoslav” diaspora rather than just a Serb, Croat, and Slovene diaspora. Secondly, this diaspora ii emerged due to factors specific to interwar America: closed border policies, America’s reputation as a “melting pot,” and the cultural pluralist movement, all of which had a centripetal effect on Serb, Croat, and Slovene organizations and gave them a reason to cooperate. Third, the Yugoslav nationalism espoused by these organizations was distinct from Yugoslavism in Yugoslavia, exhibiting syncretism with the nationalism of the host country, the United States. Fourth, old-country tourism—and travelers more broadly—are crucial to the formation of diasporic networks, (re)awakening national consciousness and giving the traveler symbolic capital within emigrant organizations. And fifth, the strength of diasporic networks lies not in their ability to shape “old country” politics, but in their ability to resist “old country” control. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project would not have turned out as it did without the contributions of a host of people. My Croatian companions referred to this, tongue-in-cheek, as “an anthropological expedition,” as if we were going to observe the customs of a remote uncontacted tribe rather than my colleagues’ co- nationals. The reason for their witticism soon became apparent, as it turned out that the morning and afternoon’s entertainment were the 76th anniversary celebrations of the founding of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH), a genocidal fascist state established in 1941 after the Nazis invaded and dismembered Yugoslavia. Following a Catholic Mass held in a nearby chapel, a flag-waving procession, and speeches in a nearby ethnic club in Croatian and Spanish condemning Yugoslavia (a state that has been defunct since 1992), we listened to a choir of around fifteen youths in Croatian folk costume singing folk songs. Afterwards, the adults communed in the back for plum brandy and gossip. In the program I saw advertisements for Croatian language schools, bars, radio stations, and podiatrists. At the time, I was struck by the banality of the event—less a fascist rally than a high school concert. The banality of fascism is hardly a fresh observation.1 But my companion’s quip— “an anthropological expedition”—was more than a witticism; it hinted at a deeper insight. After all, the kind of diaspora nationalism there was foreign to all of us: to me, because I was an American, and to my Croatian colleagues because Argentina’s Croats had a reputation of being further to the right than Croats in Croatia. Argentina, after all, was where Ante Pavelić, the leader of the NDH, fled in 1948. There, Pavelić founded the Croatian Liberation Movement, the grandfather of several far-right groups that carried out several acts of terrorism in the 1960s and 1 Hannah Arendt, Eichmann in Jerusalem: A report on the banality of evil (New York: Penguin Books, 1964). 1 1970s, causing communist authorities to start referring to the “enemy Yugoslav migration.”2 The relationship between Yugoslavia and “its” diaspora was not always thus. The aim is to show how these museums contribute to the construction of national and other identities through collections, selections and classifications of objects of interest and through historical narratives. The three museums from Bosnia and Herzegovina that are included in this study are The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo; which was founded in 1888 and is the oldest institution of this kind in the country; the History Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina founded in 1945 (Sarajevo) and the Museum of the Republic of Srpska in Banja Luka (the second largest city in BiH), which was founded in 1930 under the name the Museum of Vrbas Banovina. As far as Slovenia is concerned, two analysed museums, namely the National Museum of Slovenia (est. 1821) and the Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia (est. 1944/1948), are situated in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. The most significant periods for the creation of museums as a part of the consolidation of political power and construction of regional and/or national identities can be labelled: The period under the Austrian empire (-1918) and the establishment of first regional museums.

    60 ZuZana Poláčková; Pieter van Duin Montenegro Old and New: History, Politics, Culture, and the People The authors are focusing on how Montenegro today is coming to terms with the task of becoming a modern European nation, which implies recognition not only of democracy, the rule of law, and so forth, but also of a degree of ‘multiculturalism’, that is recognition of the existence of cultural, ethnic, linguistic and religious minorities in a society that is dominated by a Slavic Orthodox majority. In his context they are analyzing the history of the struggle of the Montenegrin people against a host of foreign invaders – after they had ceased to be invaders themselves – and especially their apparently consistent refusal to accept Ottoman sovereignty over their homeland seemed to make them the most remarkable freedom fighters imaginable and led to the creation of a special Montenegrin image in Europe. This im- age of heroic stubbornness and unique martial bravery was even consciously cultivated in Western and Central Europe from the early nineteenth century onwards, as the Greeks, the Serbs, the Montenegrins and other Balkan peoples began to resist the Ottoman Empire in a more effective way and the force of Romantic nationalism began to influence the whole of Europe, from German historians to British politi- cians, and also including Montenegrin and Serbian poets themselves. And what about the present situa- tion? Some of the relevant literature indicates that the Catholic Church and Western agencies took part in Pavelić’s concealment. The author concludes that all such conjecture lacks any foundation in the available sources. These people were ex- tradited to the Yugoslav army with the explanation that they would be treated in compliance with the international laws of war. E-mail: [email protected] This paper contributes to existing debates on the significance of modem diasporas in the context of global politics. In particular, it examines how nationalism has adapted to the newly emerging transnational environment. The new type of nationalism, long-distance nationalism, utilises modern forms of communication and travel to sustain its potency and relevance. Long-distance nationalism is not a simple consequence of global and transnational commu­ nication, but involves complex cultural, political and symbolic processes and practices.The first part of this paper examines some theoretical issues pertaining to the intersection between nationalism and transnational environments. It shows how nationalism is not antithetical to globalising and transnationalising tendencies, but instead, that it is becoming adapted to these new social conditions. In order to move beyond a rather simple assertion that trans­ nationalism and nationalism are safely co-existing, the paper argues that such cases of symbi­ osis are always concrete and ethnographically documentable. This paper grew out of the need to both assert the co-existing nature of nationalism and transnationalism and to provide a concrete example of nationalist sentiments in a modem transnational setting. This latter aim represents the core of the second part of the paper, which is based on research among second generation Croatians in Australia. It specifically explores the under-examined question of how nationalist sentiments inform and define people’s intimacy and marriage choices.

Serbia’s “Great War” was indeed la Grande Guerre, that of 1914-1918. Too often, history books now remember only that Serbia was the (unwilling) cause of that war, and public perception then fast-forwards to the 1990s, when Serbia was generally cast as the villain of the “wars of the Yugoslav succession”. Even to students of World War I, it seems to disappear from the screen between December 1915 – when it collapsed under the onslaught of German, Austro- Hungarian and Bulgarian armies – and September 1918 – when an Allied offensive, with a resurrected Serbian army, broke through the Thessaloniki Front. Yet at the time, Serbia’s resistance, the winter retreat of its aged monarch, with officialdom, parliament, army and countless refugees, was the stuff of legend. A wave of Serbophilia swept through public opinion in Allied countries – notably in France and Great Britain. V.     Health and Environment in Europe: Progress Assessment ABSTRACT This report describes the progress made by the WHO European Member States in improving their health and the environment situation over the last 20 years. The assessment focuses on the aspects of health related to clean water and air, to environments supporting safe mobility and physical activity, chemical safety, noise and safety at work. These are the environment and health issues arising from the four regional priority goals of the Children’s Environment and Health Action Plan for Europe (CEHAPE), agreed at the Fourth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health in 2004. The information collected by the European Environment and Health Information System forms the basis for the analysis. The report also presents the public governance and healthy public policy aspects of national policies on environment and health. The implementation of the CEHAPE in countries, its impact and challenges related to it are summarized using the information collected through the web-based survey on CEHAPE conducted in November 2009. If one can judge from his statement, underage Gavrilo Princip, like so many of his peers, was foremost convinced that South Slavs should be liberated from a foreign yoke and unite in their own state; this belief was strongly though not articulately mixed with another conviction that the world about to come must be the world of profound social transformation. Two motives with which our story of ‘one hundred years of citizenship’ begins will be repeated in many different forms during this century: should South Slavs have their own common state? Or form separate ones? And, regardless of the answer, should political transformations entail more social equality or only a change of the rulers at the top of the existing hierarchy? Every idea often has deep roots and various historic materializations.

    SRMUN ATLANTA 2018 Our Responsibility: Facilitating Social Development through Global Engagement and Collaboration November 15 - 17, 2018 [email protected] Greetings Delegates, Welcome to SRMUN Atlanta 2018 and the International Court of Justice (ICJ). My name is Lydia Schlitt, and I will be serving as your Chief Justice for the ICJ. This will be my third conference as a SRMUN staff member. Previously, I served as the Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at SRMUN Atlanta 2017 and the Assistant Director (AD) of the Group of 77 (G-77) at SRMUN Atlanta 2016. I am currently a Juris Doctorate candidate at the University of Oregon School of Law and hold a Bachelor’s of Science with Honors in Political Science and a minor in Mathematics from Berry College. Our committee’s Assistant Chief Justice will be Jessica Doscher. This will be Jessica’s second time as a staff member as last year she served as the AD for the General Assembly Plenary (GA Plen). Founded in 1945, the ICJ is the principal legal entity for the United Nations (UN). The ICJ’s purpose is to solve legal disputes at the request of Member States and other UN entities. By focusing on the SRMUN Atlanta 2018 theme of “Our Responsibility: Facilitating Social Development through Global Engagement and Collaboration," throughout the conference, delegates will be responsible for arguing on the behalf of their assigned position for the assigned case, as well as serving as a Justice for the ICJ for the remaining cases.
