WELCOME TO THE 5TH ANNUAL TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL This year we celebrate the fifth edition of the Tribeca Film Festival. Born of the need to bring people back to the streets of Lower Manhattan after September 11, our Festival has turned into something we could never have imagined in 2002. While we made some mistakes along the way, we have gotten bigger and better each successive year and succeeded in harnessing the spirit and the passion of independent film. On sunny days before September 11, the Twin Towers literally cast their shadows to our doorstep. Yet soon after the World Trade Center was attacked, we came to realize it was not just our neighborhood—a place called Tribeca—but all of New York that had been violated. And we saw people around the world become spiritual New Yorkers. From that solidarity, the Tribeca Film Festival has truly become New York’s festival. So to celebrate our fifth edition, we will pay tribute to New York—the whole city. Our first year we sold 35,000 tickets to our screenings; this year we expect screening attendance to reach nearly a quarter of a million. To meet the extraordinary demand, we are expanding into new neighborhoods. Yet we will remain true to our roots and retain our downtown sensibility. Tribeca travels. We have also invested heavily in creating our own cultural facilities right at the gateway to Tribeca and will operate on a year-round basis. We desperately need more arts and entertainment venues downtown and when the rebuilding effort is complete we expect to have CONTENTS our permanent home somewhere within a stone’s TFF 101..........................................................................5 throw of Ground Zero.
