Philosophy Goes to the Movies
PHILOSOPHY GOES TO THE MOVIES ‘Philosophy Goes to the Movies is very clearly and engagingly written. It has a particular claim on the attention of those preparing students for a systematic study of philosophy, one that distinguishes it from any other introductory book I know of.’ Stephen Mulhall, University of Oxford ‘I think this is an excellent text. Falzon is in control of his material. He writes clearly and at a level that undergraduates can understand. He seems as comfortable describing films as he is explaining the nature of a philosophical problem. It will make an outstanding text to use in introductory philosophy classes.’ Thomas Wartenburg, Mount Holyoke College, USA Philosophy Goes to the Movies is a new kind of introduction to philosophy that makes use of film to help us understand philosophical ideas and positions. Drawing on art- house movies like Cinema Paradiso and Hollywood blockbusters such as The Matrix, Christopher Falzon introduces and discusses central areas of philosophical concern, including: • the theory of knowledge • the self and personal identity • ethics • social and political philosophy • science and technology • critical thinking. Falzon draws from the ideas of a diverse selection of thinkers, from Plato and Descartes to Marcuse and Foucault. Ideal for the beginner, this book guides the student through philosophy using lively and illuminating cinematic examples including Total Recall, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Antz and Wings of Desire. It will also appeal to anyone interested in the philosophical dimensions of cinema. Christopher Falzon is Lecturer in Philosophy at Newcastle University, Australia. He is the author of Foucault and Social Dialogue (Routledge, 1998). -

La Scorta Dear Moviegoer, Are You Tired of the Explosions and Broken
La Scorta Dear Moviegoer, are you tired of the explosions and broken glass of True Lies , Speed, Blown Away, and Clear and Present Danger ? Weary of the cartoon characters and cartoon plots of movies like Maverick,The Mask, or Baby’s Day Out ? Ready for some real adult (no, I don’t mean that kind of “adult”) entertainment with real tension, pace and motivation which is modeled carefully on actual events? Then try La Scorta (“The Escort”), an outstanding Italian film from a director who is one to watch. La Scorta, directed by Ricky Tognazzi, is as fresh and vivid as the Italian crime headlines of the last few years, due in great part to its being based on the real experiences of one Francesco Taurisano as an investigating magistrate (called a “judge” in the sub-titles) in Sicily during the late 1980’s. It is such judges, at least the honorable ones, who have become the target of Mafia hit men as they plumbed closer and closer to the heart of Cosa Nostra operations. The most infamous of these assassinations was that of the anti-Mafia Judge Giovanni Falcone, killed in a car bomb in May 1992. This is not, then, a world of facile and meaningless blow-’em-ups where Schwarzenegger or Stallone dwell, but the real, nasty thing, happening in one of Europe’s established democracies. The film follows four policemen who find themselves assigned as the protective escort for one of these investigating magistrates working in the town of Trapani, in the far northwest corner of Sicily. -

u 11 Urban Difference “on the Move”: Disabling Mobil- ity in the Spanish Film El cochecito (Marco Ferreri, 1960) Benjamin Fraser Introduction Pulling from both disability studies and mobility studies specifically, this ar- ticle offers an interdisciplinary analysis of a cult classic of Spanish cinema. Marco Ferreri’s filmEl cochecito (1960)—based on a novel by Rafael Azcona and still very much an underappreciated film in scholarly circles—depicts the travels of a group of motorized-wheelchair owners throughout urban (and rural) Madrid. From a disability studies perspective, the film’s focus on Don Anselmo, an able-bodied but elderly protagonist who wishes to travel as his paraplegic friend, Don Lucas, does, suggests some familiar tropes that can be explored in light of work by disability theorists.1 From an (urbanized) mobil- ity studies approach, the characters’ movements through the Spanish capital suggest the familiar image of a filmic Madrid of the late dictatorship, a city that was very much culturally and physically “on the move.”2 Though not un- problematic in its nuanced portrayal of the relationships between able-bodied and disabled Madrilenians, El cochecito nonetheless broaches some implicit questions regarding who has a right to the city and also how that right may be exercised (Fraser, “Disability Art”; Lefebvre; Sulmasy). The significance of Ferreri’s film ultimately turns on its ability to “universalize” disability and connect it to the contemporary urban experience in Spain. What makes El cochecito such a complex film—and such a compelling one—is how a nuanced view of (dis)ability is woven together with explicit narratives of urban modernity and implicit narratives of national progress. -
43E Festival International Du Film De La Rochelle Du 26 Juin Au 5 Juillet 2015 Le Puzzle Des Cinémas Du Monde

A DANGEROUS METHOD (2011) Director: David Cronenberg Writers: Christopher Hampton, Christopher Hampton Stars: Michael Fassbender, Keira Knightley, Viggo Mortensen Country: UK | GE | Canada | CH Genres: Biography | Drama | Romance | Thriller Trailer In the early twentieth century, Zurich-based Carl Jung is a follower in the new theories of psychoanalysis of Vienna-based Sigmund Freud, who states that all psychological problems are rooted in sex. Jung uses those theories for the first time as part of his treatment of Sabina Spielrein, a young Russian woman bro- ught to his care. She is obviously troubled despite her assertions that she is not crazy. Jung is able to uncover the reasons for Sa- bina’s psychological problems, she who is an aspiring physician herself. In this latter role, Jung employs her to work in his own research, which often includes him and his wife Emma as test subjects. Jung is eventually able to meet Freud himself, they, ba- sed on their enthusiasm, who develop a friendship driven by the- ir lengthy philosophical discussions on psychoanalysis. Actions by Jung based on his discussions with another patient, a fellow psychoanalyst named Otto Gross, lead to fundamental chan- ges in Jung’s relationships with Freud, Sabina and Emma. -
