    Volume 2 (2), 2009 ISSN 1756-8226 Locations of Motherhood in Shakespeare on Film LAURA GALLAGHER Queens University Belfast Adelman’s Suffocating Mothers (1992) appropriates feminist psychoanalysis to illustrate how the suppression of the female is represented in selected Shakespearean play-texts (chronologically from Hamlet to The Tempest ) in the attempted expulsion of the mother in order to recover the masculine sense of identity. She argues that Hamlet operates as a watershed in Shakespeare’s canon, marking the prominent return of the problematic maternal presence: “selfhood grounded in paternal absence and in the fantasy of overwhelming contamination at the site of origin – becomes the tragic burden of Hamlet and the men who come after him” (1992, p.10). The maternal body is thus constructed as the site of contamination, of simultaneous attraction and disgust, of fantasies that she cannot hold: she is the slippage between boundaries – the abject. Julia Kristeva’s theory of the abject (1982) ostensibly provides a hypothesis for analysis of women in the horror film, yet the theory also provides a critical means of situating the maternal figure, the “monstrous- feminine” in film versions of Shakespeare (Creed, 1993, 1996). Therefore the choice to focus on the selected Hamlet , Macbeth , Titus Andronicus and Richard III film versions reflects the centrality of the mother figure in these play-texts, and the chosen adaptations most powerfully illuminate this article’s thesis. Crucially, in contrast to Adelman’s identification of the attempted suppression of the “suffocating mother” figures 1, in adapting the text to film the absent maternal figure is forced into (an extended) presence on screen.

GÜLBÜN ONUR HAZİRLAYAN ŞEFİKA BİLGE CANTEKİNLER KONYA, 2005 ÖZET 1930ların başında Hollywood ile birlikte yükselen Amerikan Film Endüstrisi vazgeçilmez kaynakları arasında ünlü İngiliz oyun yazarı William Shakespeare'in eserlerini ilk sıraya oturtmuştur. Sessiz sinemadan günümüz üç boyutlu animasyon film dönemine geçişte klasik Shakespeare oyunları da her yeni yönetmen ve yapımcıyla birlikte farklı bir boyut kazanmıştır. Tarihsel bir trajedi olan Shakespeare'in III. Richard adlı oyunu ilk oynandığı 1590lardan günümüze kadar geçen sürede en çok sahnelenen ama en az anlaşılan oyunlardan biri olmuştur. Richard, ikincisi İngiliz yönetmen Richard Loncraine'in İngiliz aktör-yönetmen Ian McKellen ile birlikte çektiği 1995 yapımı III. Richard ve sonuncusu da Amerikalı aktör Al Pacino'nun yönetip başrol oynadığı Looking For Richard (Richard'ı Aramak) adlı filmidir. Bu çalışma, seçilen üç sahne ile oyunun kahramanı olan III. Richard'ın yükseliş ve çöküşünü temel alarak üç film uyarlaması arasındaki farklılıkları değerlendirmektedir.     La Scorta Dear Moviegoer, are you tired of the explosions and broken glass of True Lies , Speed, Blown Away, and Clear and Present Danger ? Weary of the cartoon characters and cartoon plots of movies like Maverick,The Mask, or Baby’s Day Out ? Ready for some real adult (no, I don’t mean that kind of “adult”) entertainment with real tension, pace and motivation which is modeled carefully on actual events? Then try La Scorta (“The Escort”), an outstanding Italian film from a director who is one to watch. La Scorta, directed by Ricky Tognazzi, is as fresh and vivid as the Italian crime headlines of the last few years, due in great part to its being based on the real experiences of one Francesco Taurisano as an investigating magistrate (called a “judge” in the sub-titles) in Sicily during the late 1980’s. It is such judges, at least the honorable ones, who have become the target of Mafia hit men as they plumbed closer and closer to the heart of Cosa Nostra operations. The most infamous of these assassinations was that of the anti-Mafia Judge Giovanni Falcone, killed in a car bomb in May 1992. This is not, then, a world of facile and meaningless blow-’em-ups where Schwarzenegger or Stallone dwell, but the real, nasty thing, happening in one of Europe’s established democracies. The film follows four policemen who find themselves assigned as the protective escort for one of these investigating magistrates working in the town of Trapani, in the far northwest corner of Sicily.

    43e Festival International du Film de La Rochelle du 26 juin au 5 juillet 2015 LE PUZZLE DES CINÉMAS DU MONDE Une fois de plus nous revient l’impossible tâche de synthétiser une édition multiforme, tant par le nombre de films présentés que par les contextes dans lesquels ils ont été conçus. Nous ne pouvons nous résoudre à en sélectionner beaucoup moins, ce n’est pas faute d’essayer, et de toutes manières, un contexte économique plutôt inquiétant nous y contraint ; mais qu’une ou plusieurs pièces essentielles viennent à manquer au puzzle mental dont nous tentons, à l’année, de joindre les pièces irrégulières, et le Festival nous paraîtrait bancal. Finalement, ce qui rassemble tous ces films, qu’ils soient encore matériels ou virtuels (50/50), c’est nous, sélectionneuses au long cours. Nous souhaitons proposer aux spectateurs un panorama généreux de la chose filmique, cohérent, harmonieux, digne, sincère, quoique, la sincérité… Ambitieux aussi car nous aimons plus que tout les cinéastes qui prennent des risques et notre devise secrète pourrait bien être : mieux vaut un bon film raté qu’un mauvais film réussi. Et enfin, il nous plaît que les films se parlent, se rencontrent, s’éclairent les uns les autres et entrent en résonance dans l’esprit du festivalier. En 2015, nous avons procédé à un rééquilibrage géographique vers l’Asie, absente depuis plusieurs éditions de la programmation. Tout d’abord, avec le grand Hou Hsiao-hsien qui en est un digne représentant puisqu’il a tourné non seulement à Taïwan, son île natale mais aussi au Japon, à Hongkong et en Chine.

    Ordinary Heroes: Depictions of Masculinity in World War II Film A thesis submitted to the Miami University Honors Program in partial fulfillment of the requirements for University Honors with Distinction by Robert M. Dunlap May 2007 Oxford, Ohio Abstract Much work has been done investigating the historical accuracy of World War II film, but no work has been done using these films to explore social values. From a mixed film studies and historical perspective, this essay investigates movie images of American soldiers in the European Theater of Operations to analyze changing perceptions of masculinity. An examination of ten films chronologically shows a distinct change from the post-war period to the present in the depiction of American soldiers. Masculinity undergoes a marked change from the film Battleground (1949) to Band of Brothers (2001). These changes coincide with monumental shifts in American culture. Events such as the loss of the Vietnam War dramatically changed perceptions of the Second World War and the men who fought during that time period. The United States had to deal with a loss of masculinity that came with their defeat in Vietnam and that shift is reflected in these films. The soldiers depicted become more skeptical of their leadership and become more uncertain of themselves while simultaneously appearing more emotional. Over time, realistic images became acceptable and, in fact, celebrated as truthful while no less masculine. In more recent years, there is a return to the heroism of the World War II generation, with an added emotionality and dimensionality. Films reveal not only the popular opinions of the men who fought and reflect on the validity of the war, but also show contemporary views of masculinity and warfare.

This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007.
