With the shortage, a sort of etiquette has emerged. Many students agree that it is impolite to take an empty chair without asking those sitting at the table with that chair. Ignorance of this rule annoys some students. “People think they can just walk up and take (the chairs),” said Alex Hammack, junior. To prevent this lunchtime larceny, students will often leave backpacks or other personal belongings in a seat to stake their claim. Unfortunately this is not always effective. “It’s causing a lot of hostility between people because people will steal chairs and drop people’s stuff off the chairs to take them,” said Krystal Cheung, junior. Most students see grabbing a chair that has obviously been taken as a very rude act, and it is a perfect example of how des- perate some are for a seat. Why is it that there is such a shortage of chairs that people are willing to anger others in their way? It was not always like this. “There’s always enough (chairs) at the beginning of the year, when students also eat outside, and they break,” said Dean VanDiver. “There’s enough for six people at a table, but people move them around. We do need more chairs though.” It does not seem like we will be getting new chairs in the near future. When the weather gets warmer, some students will return to taking their lunch outside, and hopefully the chair problem will sort itself out naturally. His favorite part of being at Southeast is helping out with the sports and watching the kids succeed at what they do. However, he was taught a little bit by the golf team when the coaches played, and lost, at the Lincoln Scramble. He was, however, given credit for being able to hit the ball about 300 yards. Mr. Crumrine By BRIAN GALECKI ART DIRECTOR This year, there is a new teacher in the math department, Mr. Tim Crumrine. He has previously taught at Jacksonville High School and got his bachelor’s degree in math and science at Illinois College. He seems to be enjoying his first year at Southeast. “The students and faculty are very friendly and very accepting of new people,” said Mr. Crumrine. He also happens to be coaching the Southeast Ping-Pong team. “Ping-Pong is great,” said Mr. Crumrine, after beating the two Ping-Pong champs, Brian Galecki and Adam Dow. During high school, he spent hours practicing with one of his best friends who had a Ping-Pong table. He will also be coaching baseball in the spring, a sport he enjoyed playing in college.

Mrs. Dalton By CHRIS UPMANIS SPORTS EDITOR Southeast’s new athletic director, Chad Roseboom, has a new secretary. Her name is Cheri Dalton. She moved to Springfield from Florida eight years ago due to a transfer with her husband’s employer. Mrs. Dalton started working for the district in 2003- 2004 as a secretary at Withrow School. After that job, she did short term subbing at District 186’s main office, Springfield High School, and has worked in all the offices here at Southeast. She is the one who is responsible for coordinating our rosters, schedules, programs, eligibility, daily announcements, and transportation for sports and field trips. Stop by anytime in the main office to thank Mrs. Dalton for all the things she does for us.

Ms. Putnick By ALEXIS MORRISON STAFF WRITER Welcome, Ms. Putnick! One of our newest teachers this year is Marsha Putnick. Ms. Putnick happens to be a science teacher here at Southeast High School. Ms. Putnick was born in Danville, but was primarily raised in Hoopeston. Although she has lived most of her life in Springfield, she has also lived and taught in Glendale, AZ. She moved there with her husband and mother-in-law in 1995 but returned to Springfield this year. She chose to teach at Southeast and views it as a challenge. Ms Putnick is no stranger to kids. She has 7 brothers and sisters, 16 nieces and nephews and 10 great nieces and nephews. In addition to having a large family of children, she has been teaching for 14 years. Ms Putnick attended Sangamon State University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree. “I enjoy students and showing them things about nature,” Ms. Putnick said. She also enjoys playing the guitar, singing, training birds and cooking. When asked about the difference in school now than when she was in school, Ms. Putnick stated, “When I went to school, the teachers held great respect. Now teachers have to justify everything they do and do not receive the respect they once did.” Ms. Putnick stated that her favorite quote is, “I hear, and I forget, I see, and I remember, I do, and I understand.” Ms Putnick is a nice addition to the Spartan Family. He says that his favorite part of teaching is “knowing that I can help the students who don’t think they can be helped.” Mr. Bradley also coaches sixth-grade basketball at Franklin and volunteer coaches for Southeast boys basketball. A player him- self, he could dunk without injuring himself and once “stuffed” a six-foot-two opponent. Mr. Bradley has been a large part in three or four local music and has a passion for it. He hopes to do more with his music in the future, and views the challenges as opportunities for growth,. “The more I lose, the more I learn to win,” said Mr. Bradley.

Mr. Shuster By JAKE SAWYER STAFF WRITER There is another new face here at Southeast and he goes by the name of Mr. Shuster. He is a geography teacher and he is also the new wrestling coach. He is an alumni of Southeast and after graduating from here, he attended Western Michigan University and later University of Illinois at Springfield. Before coming to Southeast, he taught at Jefferson Middle School. He loves it here at Southeast and he used to be an assistant for the school last year. When asked what compelled him to be the wrestling coach, he said, “Simply the love of the sport, and the program that has given me so much.” Outside from teaching and coaching he likes to play Nintendo and listen to his favorite artist, Alicia Keys.

Mrs. Rockrohr By LINDSAY MURRAY STAFF WRITER At Southeast High School, we have a new and very well experienced teacher this year. Mrs. Kathy Jo Rockrohr is the new addi- tion to the science department. She teaches Science of the Physical World and Chemistry in the Community. She has been involved with teaching for 25 years. Before teaching in Illinois, Mrs. Rockrohr taught in Indiana and California. After 18 years she came back to Illinois and taught at Grant and Jefferson Middle Schools. Mrs. Rockrohr has a 22 year-old daughter and a 21 year-old son. When she is not busy at work, she enjoys traveling with her fam- ily and making quilts. She has won numerous awards for her quilts and even has some published in books. She loves the company of her daughter while making quilts. “It’s just a fun thing we can do together as girls,” said Rockrohr. Hopefully she will stay here with us for years to come.

Mrs. Clark By LINNEA MANHEIM STAFF WRITER Every teacher has a story. Mrs. Claudia Clark, the newest addition to Southeast’s special education department, recently took the time to share her story with Windows. Born and raised in the Chicago area, Mrs. Clark was drawn to teaching by the opportunity to help others. Since transferring from Lawrence, she has done her best to help students learn. “[I] want to help students gain insight into subjects,” said Mrs. Clark. Although she was unwilling to reveal any quirks, Mrs. Clark mentioned that she loves to read anything and everything; historical time-travel books are her favorite. If a book starts out boring, she will give it 200 to 300 pages to improve. “Reading opens the world to you,” said Mrs. Clark. 8 A R T S & E N T E R T A I N M E N T

M O V I E S O L D S C H O O L R E V I E W Sonic the Hedgehog BY TONY ANDERSON CIRCULATION MANAGER After playing this game, people around the world thought hedgehogs were blue and very, very fast. Sonic The Hedgehog came out in the United States on June 23, 1991 for the Sega Genesis and since then he has become a video game icon. It had a simple premise; you play Sonic, a blue hedgehog that has to stop the evil Dr. Ivo Robotnik (AKA Eggman) from col- lecting six of the Chaos Emeralds in an attempt to rule the world. What makes Sonic so incredible was the fact that the creators of the game wanted players to go as fast as they could. Compared to other games of its time, Sonic was fast paced but with no drop in frame rate. Because of the game’s success, Sega has made over 50 games with that blue hedgehog spanning from Sonic Golf to Sonic Pinball. Overall, I give The Sonic the Hedgehog Series a five out of five, you cannot stop that need for speed.
