any will remember BH Hudson as the winner of Jazz- Week Programmer Of The Year In A Mid-sized Market. MThis is in no doubt in recognition of Hudson taking a sta- tion that had a wishy-washy smooth and jazz format and making it sound like “a real jazz station.” While she chose to remain shrouded in mystery when it came to certain personal matters, she was more than forthright when it was time to talk turkey about radio. – Tad Hendrickson

JazzWeek: Okay I’ll start easy. What does B.H. Stand for? BH Hudson: Not saying. It is a secret. How did you get into the wildly lucrative world of jazz ra- dio? I started on pirate radio doing an R&B show in Seattle. We used a homemade transmitter, about 100 watts, the same output as a standard light bulb. I loved spinning vinyl and doing announcing and finally went legit when I moved to North Carolina and started doing a jazz shift in Rocky Mount, N.C., once a week, which led me to volunteering at WNCU in 1995. You’ve been with WNCU since the beginning in 1995. Any stories of the early days? The early days were great: lots of fun, several technical mis- haps, people having fist fights, leaving the mic on while you trash talk with your buddies about what a jerk so and so is. That sort of thing. Wait a sec. Fistfights? There was only one, and it was a long time ago. I don’t know what that was all about. I walked by the main control room one day, and a couple of announcers, whose egos were WNCU so large they barely fit in the room, were having a “physical BH Hudson continued ... jazzweek.com • May 22, 2006 JazzWeek 11 Radio Q&A: BH Hudson (continued)

But really, I think one of the biggest changes was switching the for- mat from a mix of “smooth” fusion-y background music and straight-ahead is to continue to jazz to all straight-ahead. After that switch, we started sounding like a real offer a variety of jazz station. mainstream artists, Don’t you host “The Bop Shop”? What are you trying to do with that show? Actually, The Bop Shop was a show I did in the ’90s. I’m currently on the air “both legendary and every weekday morning from 8-12. But, back to The Bop Shop. That show was in response to the continuous phone calls I would get when I would sub during rising stars, and to day-part music shifts. Everyone was pleading with me to take smooth off the increase awareness air and play the real deal. So I convinced the PD and general manager at the time to let me do nothing but straight ahead and see how that went. So, every of underplayed or Thursday night, I came out swinging and didn’t let up until I had to turn the transmitter off. I loved doing that show – be-bop, re-bop, hard-bop, and free- under appreciated bop were all in the mix. As it turns out, that show started bringing in some se- music and rious dollars during fund-raising campaigns. You are music director as well. In light of these revelations, what is your musicians. overall vision for the station? The vision for the station, as far as jazz is concerned, is to continue to offer a variety of mainstream artists, both legendary and rising stars, and to increase awareness of underplayed or under appreciated music and musicians. I am al- ways looking for unrecognized people to play. That jazz is a cultural resource for our community and that we want to help keep the music alive is all part of our vision here that is shared by our general manager, Edith Thorpe. We have been discussing producing modules and programs for a national audience in the near future. [We’re thinking about] what to do with our digital opportuni- ties also. Keeping the commitment to mainstream jazz is part of our steadfast promise to our listeners. No diluted playlists here, whether it is jazz, blues, reg- gae, traditional gospel, whatever. It is always going to be authentic. How do you define mainstream jazz? The evolution of jazz has gone through many morphs over the past 200 years. After all, jazz never stands still. Since its birth in New Orleans, certain styles and players have created a well-documented vocabulary of blues, rhythm, har- mony, ethnicity, etc. That’s the brew I call mainstream. We play everything that is part of that evolution, past, present and future. We absolutely do not play anything that doesn’t have any reference to that vocabulary. For example, if you were to put smooth jazz under the microscope, you can see that it does not have any jazz DNA. However, take a wild, outside player or a conservative chamber group, and there will always be some component of the jazz vocabu- continued ... jazzweek.com • May 22, 2006 JazzWeek 12 Radio Q&A: BH Hudson (continued)

They are all good at what they do, and I enjoy their programming for the most part. How do you like doing the morning DJ thing? It’s not exactly jazz hours in the traditional sense. Truth be told, I hate the morning shift. I am a night owl at heart, and have never made the transition to morning time as work time. Also, the morn- ing playlist doesn’t always lend itself to rip roaring bebop/hard bop, so I have had to tone things down. Jazz sets my heart on fire, so I have to stay mindful of what my audience might be doing at that time of day. You play alto. Do you have to fight the urge to get too technical when you are on-air? Yes, especially when I interview a reed player. How was the transition from player to DJ? If you consider the idea that creating a set that sounds good is an art form, or the art of the set as we programmers say, then jazz radio is a creative process as well. Nothing will ever match the joy I felt playing in a band, but getting peo- ple excited about jazz by playing good stuff in a good sequence is very satisfy- ing, so the transition has been acceptable. Do you play around town or out of town? I don’t really play much anymore. The amount of free time needed for practice is non-existent for me now. And there is nothing worse to my ears than a reed player who hasn’t been practicing. You’ve been up for best station in a medium-sized market. What are some of the unique challenges of working in a market that size? Does size matter?
