jazzweek.com • March 6, 2006 JazzWeek 9 Industry Q&A: Ron Goldstein, Verve Records Chief Executive Officer and President

ome of what Ron Goldstein has to say here would be down- right shocking if we jazz insiders hadn’t already seen the truth Sin front of our eyes as CD sales dwindle and audiences are pulled by an ever widening array of distractions. Gold- stein is no Bruce Lundvall, nor does he claim to be, coming from a pop and rock format. But all the same, he spends a lot of time thinking about jazz. He’s come upon some hard truths, which may help radio and the rest of the industry rethink things, perhaps find- ing a way to make themselves more viable. We recently caught up with Ron at his office. – Tad Hendrickson

JazzWeek: You’re haven’t signed a jazz artist in a while. Why not? Ron Goldstein: Because they don’t write great tunes is part of the reason. There is no shortage of really fine musicians out there who can really play, but whatever music they are making is not connecting to much of an audience. Are you guys out of the jazz business? I wouldn’t say that. We still have Herbie Hancock, , , and , whose new record is phenomenal. We still have , though her next record is much more of a soul record.

It’s not that we Has smooth jazz been hit hard as well? We basically have two artists left. What happened is that when it was thriv- want to be out of ing, these artists were getting pretty decent money – anywhere from 75,000 to the jazz business. 200,000 records sold – but sales have fallen off so dramatically that I had to go to the artists and ask them to take a pay cut. We wanted to continue to work It’s just that there with them, but most artists opted to leave. George Benson’s lawyer gave us an either/or ultimatum. Either we pay all the money on the contract or they walk, is nothing that is and they walked. There was no negotiation. I was very sore about that. coming along that Well, numbers are certainly down from even 10 or 15 years ago. “ is exciting. Also, there just doesn’t seem to be a good number of producers, either who the artists want or who are available, to help them make these records. Artists now take the viewpoint that it is their creativity and their music, so they are go- ing to go into the studio to make records that they want to make. I believe that putting a band together and going out on the road is a lot different than going into the studio. There is a real craftsmanship to recording. Producers help de- velop material, give an objective point of view, all the kinds of things that clas- sic producers used to do. There is a lot that goes into these recording sessions that musicians don’t really pay attention to. Is this why you’re signing non-jazz acts? It’s not that we want to be out of the jazz business. It’s just that there is noth- ing that is coming along that is exciting. There was a blip with Joshua Redman, and Christian McBride 10 years ago, but it seemed to dry up very quickly. Is there someone who you rate as successful as both an artist and com- mercial entity? To me the last person who came along and did really great re- cords, which people bought and had great bands, was . He also had a young audience. Is jazz still commercially viable? It doesn’t look like jazz will be viable in the future with the majors. You have to have artists that can break through, who are entertaining, who are creatively good. The business is hurting in general because of video games and television and computer stuff. People have less of an attention span too. To get them to sit down and listen to a record is not that easy. The albums have gotten longer too. Which is another problem from the artist. I’ve argued until I was blue in the face with several artists about cutting back the length. continued ... jazzweek.com • March 6, 2006 JazzWeek 11 Industry Q&A: Ron Goldstein (continued)

I thought that that would be a comfortable place for us. How was this received by non-jazz artists? I had to do this pitch to the artists where I would say Ron Goldstein worked with and Black Sabbath and . Ron Goldstein was there from the very first day that U2 released its first record. I do have friends out there. I had an entertainment lawyer friend who understood what I was trying to do. He would steer people . This is why Blue Thumb came about? We started down the wrong path and signed the wrong acts and there was something [of a stigma] about Blue Thumb. Blue Thumb was successful at one time; it was a great label. It was eclectic. But I sitting around one weekend and I had this revelation: I started out as a local promotions guy in 1966 for MGM/Verve. That year MGM/Verve started a new label called Verve Fore- cast. It did Laura Nyro’s first record, , , the Vel- vet Underground. I loved all that music. Universal owns Forecast so that’s when I decided to restart the label. Does it make any difference what label you release things on at this junc- ture? Not right now. I think it’s starting to make a difference within the industry that people are becoming aware of it. Also, when we went to sign the Brazil- ian Girls, we told them they would be on Blue Thumb. They said: “No, we want to be on Verve.” I thought: “Wow. Maybe there are artists out there who would want to be on Verve and don’t mind that it was a known as a jazz label. “Verve” is still in there. Why didn’t Jesse Harris work out? Jesse is a terrific terrific songwriter, but he is not as strong a performer as he is a songwriter. I think he would tell you that we really did support him, we love him, but vocally it’s a little tough. We’re not in a position as labels were years ago where you could sign acts because you thought they were great whether or not they could sell records. Based on the success of , why not look at other artists in a simi- lar vein? We’re doing a standards record, half done by Tommy LiPu- ma and half by Phil Ramone. We’ve gone after a few other things. We didn’t know about Michael Bublé – it was a Canadian situation that knew about. You win some and you lose some. We had a shot at Peter Cincotti and we passed. These things happen. JW
