jazzweek.com • Jan. 23, 2005 JazzWeek 10 IAJE Wrap Up: Don Lucoff

es, we featured Don a while back as the founder of DL Media. This time we’re going to speak to him Yspecifically as the media representative of IAJE about how things went for the 2006 edition. On a personal note, it was great to see everyone that I saw, but as is always the case with big events, it seemed that I never had enough time with anyone and just plain never hooked up with oth- ers I’d hoped to see. Next year I guess, or perhaps this June at the JazzWeek Summit. – Tad Hendrickson

JazzWeek: What were some of the biggest success of this year’s event? Don Lucoff: Musically speaking, the ten-year-old (Tyler Lindsay of Virginia Steven Tucker Beach, Va.) who spontaneously jumped up on stage at the NEA Jazzmasters Don Lucoff Ceremony jam session and sat in. He held his own! It was pretty phenomenal – the room erupted and people leapt to their feet. It wasn’t planned. What about the adults? The trio with , Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette was a major achievement for the conference. We’d never had an event of that stature – that event marked the first time that the three of them ever played together live. Whenever you think of IAJE you think of clinicians and university bands, it’s a lot of great music, but it’s not world premieres like that one. That’s an in- stance where the IAJE made history. Another of the most anticipated events from this year was the Nordic Canal, which was very ambitious in that we pre- sented one band from each of the Scandinavian countries. It culminated with the performance of E.S.T., which is one of the largest selling jazz band in Eu- rope. This has set the stage for IAJE to focus in a major way on a different country each year. Nearly 40 countries are represented at IAJE, but this is the farthest we’ve gone in spotlighting a country. How did this happen? continued ... jazzweek.com • Jan. 23, 2005 JazzWeek 11 IAJE Wrapup: Don Lucoff (continued)

It was really an outgrowth of Kjetil Møster getting the 5th Annual Interna- tional Jazz Award for New Talent, which recognizes a rising artist who has yet to sign a major record contract. In the past we gave this award to a European for outstanding life achievement, which went to in 2004. We’ve now recast this as a new star award. Møster is the first one to get new type of award. Was there a lot of feedback from previous events that asked for more of an international flair or performance debuts? No. It’s just been a natural evolution for the organization. When opportuni- ties present themselves, it gives the organization a chance to grow and reach into new territories. It’s generally an outgrowth of the relative strength of dif- ferent chapter units in their respective countries. We have a large amount of support from Japan and many of the countries in Europe. We took the con- ference to Canada in ’03 because is our second largest chapter, it made sense to go there because we knew we’d get the biggest amount of support. What about the panels? What was the biggest success? The panel was the big- gest thing we’ve done on our Indus- try Track since we had Quincy Jones in 2001. We anticipated a larger than Tom Mallison JazzWeek sponsored a series of radio workshops during the conference. Thursday’s normal turnout, so we doubled the size panel discussed the basics of jazz radio. Panelists included from left, David Jaye, host of the room, going from 400 to 800 or of Jazzin’ Around, broadcast live on Sundays in Pittsburgh and available as a podcast; a thousand. I’ve already suggested a part two for next year and given an invitation to Downbeat and Concord Records. The one-hour session this year only focused on the early years – [moderator] Ira Gitler did not get past the mid-’50s in his discussion. There was a lot that he covered from early on and that’s where it went. So my idea is to bring Sonny back and talk about the rest of his career. If that hap- pens I would try and put it in a bigger room like the ballroom at the Sheraton. Were you happy with the panel turnouts? Any highlights? I was particularly happy with the Indie Label panel. This really speaks to the heart of the industry, especially now. That panel really covered a lot of ground and had very instructive dialogue. As was the Smooth Jazz panel, which was really a dialogue of the panelist. This is really what we strive to have with the panels: a conversation amongst the panelists and with the moderator. It was a very linear conversation, which is more conversational and free flowing. Any busts? The Turf Wars panel didn’t quite work out because four of the five panelists didn’t agree with the idea that there are jazz turf wars. I think it’s clear, maybe not amongst the panelists, that in speaking to many people in the industry that there is a strong feeling among many club owners and people who run performance spaces that there are turf wars. Were you thinking about fighting over audience or musicians? Both. Let’s talk about the fact that a major jazz club and an arts space are in the same market. How do those venues coexist? Or do they? With the exception of Festival Fritz PhotGraphics Production’s Scott Southard, the panelists Avid jazz fan and Time Warner, Inc. Right. The business has to respond to changes in the marketplace. When an airline like Jet Blue comes into a market with lower prices the oth- er airlines have to react to stay competitive. I’m not saying clubs have to low- er their fees, but they have to rethink the quality of their service, the quality of the their food. Are they just booking the same people over and over again? I won’t have exact numbers for a couple of weeks, but I would say that we’re probably up 5-10 percent from the last time in New York. What about Long Beach last year? Well, it’s not really comparable because we have a significant drop off because of the longer trip for Europeans and those on a budget can stay for APAP [the convention held by the Association of Arts Presenters] and MIDEM [a glob- al music business tradeshow comparable in size to IAJE], which are held right after IAJE. Plus New York is New York and they can get a lot work done be- cause it’s the jazz center of the universe. People have to have a good reason to travel to , particularly when budgets are tight and the have to go to APAP or MIDEM. California is important though. We’re back in New York in 2007, Toronto in 2008, and back in New York in 2010 as well. 2009 is up for grabs. New Orleans! There is a strong push for New Orleans in 2009, but it’s up in the air.
