jazzweek.com • Oct. 5, 2005 JazzWeek 9 Artist Q&A:

Photos by Phil Knott/The Bad Plus , Reid Anderson, : The Bad Plus Reid Anderson of The Bad Plus he Bad Plus pretty much rocked the house at this year’s IAJE, but it was nice to come back to the band and catch them at its TNew York home club of the Village Vangaurd. The trio ran through a set that emphasized material from the excellent new Sus- picious Activity? And threw in a couple of gems from past Columbia releases. JazzWeek caught up with bassist Reid Anderson the fol- lowing day to see how things were going as the band prepares for its third tour campaign, which includes a much anticipated gig with Ornette Coleman. – Tad Hendrickson continued ... jazzweek.com • Oct. 5, 2005 JazzWeek 10 Q&A: Reid Anderson of The Bad Plus (continued)

JazzWeek: This is your third record for Columbia. What’s been the hardest part about number three? Reid Anderson: We’re no spring chickens anymore…. You know what? It wasn’t hard. It was our easiest record yet to do. We had a chance to play this music live. I feel like we’ve fully had a chance to settle into who we are. I think we were settled in for the first record too, but it was just a really easy process where we knew what to do. The hardest part was probably having too much material and whittling that down, but even with that it was pretty obvious what we were going to put on the record. With three writers in the band, I don’t think you’ll have a problem coming up with tunes. It’s a real advantage – one person doesn’t have to shoulder all the burden of the writing. There is always fresh ideas com- ing in. You guys are all such unique music per- sonalities, and you’ve been doing this for a while. Have the playing styles of each of you rubbed off on the others? I think so. You spend that much time with another musician you’ll inevitably influ- ence each other. I don’t know if the play- ing has, but we are all aware of one anoth- er’s playing and in very subtle ways we’ve been molded by the thing that is the band with a capital B. It kind of has a life and a will of its own. It shapes us. Listening to the new record, it’s immedi- ately obvious who it is. The music is a reflection of who we are. It’s not some sort of novelty or accident. I would say that it’s very sincere in that way and we can’t hide from that and don’t want to. There is only one cover on the new record and you didn’t even play one dur- ing the set I saw last night. Are you getting away from that for any reason in particular?

continued ... jazzweek.com • Oct. 5, 2005 JazzWeek 11 Q&A: Reid Anderson of The Bad Plus (continued)

We’re not getting away from it for any reason. I think we’ll always do that be- cause we like doing that. But we have so much original material and the band has always been about our original music. The covers have gotten a lot of at- tention, and they’re fun for us, and for the audience to listen to and hear what happens to these songs that they know well, but with three and con- stant influx of ideas, it’s where we’re head- ing these days. You guys are playing on a bill with Or- nette Coleman in November. That’s a pretty big deal. It is a pretty big deal. It’s our first show actually with Ornette. We did a show in Minneapolis that was an Ornette festival. He was in the audience when we played, but he played on another night. We’ve al- ways wanted to do a show with him so this is triumph for us. That will be at NJPAC, which is a pretty big space. We play rooms like that all the time, and if the acoustics are on our side then it tends to work pretty well. Why do you think that is? Our music is such that we’re always think- ing big. There are a lot of grand state- ments in there. There is also a certain level of performance energy and the chemistry level between the three of us. We put out a kind of energy that tries to embrace ev- eryone in whatever size venue it is. I think that our music is sort of appropriate to larger rooms and filling those spaces. There is that grand statement or hook, which is why I think younger audiences tend to migrate toward you guys. I don’t think what we do is gratuitous, it’s really just a natural extension of our personalities. We like to present our music with clarity, with a pop sensibility if you will. I think with those sorts of things in mind, it hopefully communi- cates something they can grasp on to, even it its not something that immedi- ately definable.

continued ... jazzweek.com • Oct. 5, 2005 JazzWeek 12 Q&A: Reid Anderson of The Bad Plus (continued)

Are you still getting the shocked looks of glee or horror at this point when you play live? Well hopefully that is still happening. We’re playing places we’ve never played before, where people don’t know anything about us – where they have that ini- tial reaction of: “Oh my God. What is this?” At the same time we have people coming that really know the music. There is a strong support from the audi- ence. You feel that when you walk on stage – they came to see you. They aren’t just coming to see some random jazz show, they’re coming to see the Bad Plus, and that’s an incredible kind of energy to perform with and perform to. What’s happening next for the band? For the foreseeable future we’ll be traveling everywhere, especially at the top of a new album cycle there is a lot of touring. We’ll be hopping back and forth. We’ll be in Europe for a bit and then we’ll be on the West Coast. Then back to Europe. Then Mexico City. We just got back from Japan and Korea, which went really well. JW

Tati (ECM) BALLADS ALBUMS CAN be a tough sell for some of us, par- ticularly those do- ing a morning drive show, but the beau- ty of Tati will not lull one to sleep. Quite the contrary, the smoldering play- ing of trumpeter En- rico Rava is straight out of the Miles Da- vis and Chet Baker school of cool, and the sparks may be blue but they burn white hot. The Italian icon is joined here by drummer Paul Motian and pianist Stafano Bollani (who is Rava’s regular accompanist), and the three play with an overt sense of tension. The lone cover of Gershwin’s “Man I Love” is stellar, as is the take on Puccini’s “E lucevan le stele.” Those looking for something more energetic can turn to the surging “Mirrors.” Here on Tati no one struggles to Be A fill in the spaces, instead leaving notes and phrases to hang Disaster Relief in the air resonating like musical innuendo.
