OWEN GRUNDY PIER / JUNE 1 In his Jersey City home, a 10-year-old Vic Juris picked up a guitar and never let go. With near 30 recordings as a leader, Vic has also shared his phenomenal flexibility with , Sarah Vaughan, , James Moody and . Honored as a top guitarist by the Jazz Journalists Association, Vic has authored numerous books on jazz guitar and technique. Vic's new recording, Eye Contact (Steeplechase) displays his inspiring interpretation of the music of , , , and , alongside a rework- ing of an original from his early recording days and the bossa-flavored title track. Vic kicks off the weeklong 2018 Riverview Jazz Festival with fellow guitarists Dave Stryker and Apicella. He also performs with Erik Lawrence at the Port Imperial Sunset Music series June 21. RAY MANTILLA GATEWAY 2 / JUNE 6 Absorbing the rhythm-rich, dance-crazed atmosphere of his birthplace in the , master percussionist Ray Mantilla was playing Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz harmonies early on with and Eddie Palmieri. Ray quickly added steam to bands led by and and he toured the world with 's Jazz Messengers. Ray's diversity included work with , , Eartha Kitt and . On his latest recording, High Voltage (Savant), the percussive fire and textures are all there, revisiting "Comin' Home Baby" and "Cedar's Blues," a scorching "Solar" and some conguero call and response on Ron Carter's "." Ray's own "Lane Change" shows the versatility one can expect from any Mantilla moment. Ray's sure to have you dancing on your lunch hour! BEHN GILLECE HYATT NEW BRUNSWICK / JUNE 14 For vibraphonist Behn Gillece, teenage studies in classical percussion led to the jazz world, where he's developed into a significant musical force. Behn's quiet fire on a bebop smoker or a peaceful ballad statement can be heard on four co-led recordings with saxophonist Ken Fowser and three as leader for the Posi-tone label, or as a wel- come sideman on efforts from saxophonist Walt Weiskopf, trombonist Michael Dease and singer Melody Gardot. Behn's new offering, Straight Forward (Posi-tone) is as part of the group New Faces with trumpeter Josh Lawrence, saxophonist Roxy Coss, pianist Theo Hill, bassist Peter Brendler and drummer Vinnie Sperrazza. They cele- brate the fire and hush of this new album with originals and a nod to . CARRIE JACKSON 1867 SANCTUARY AT EWING / JUNE 16 For Newark native Carrie Jackson, the spirit of song started at age 6 singing at Mount Calvary Baptist Church and developed in school with piano and voice studies with Duke Anderson, eventually singing professionally with Duke's big band. Comfortable in the worlds of jazz, pop, blues and gospel, Carrie and her musical friends regularly share with audiences the spirit of Basie, Ellington, Armstrong, Gillespie and Waller, spicing things up with the best of the Great American Songbook. Carrie's recording, A Tribute to Sarah Vaughan, Newark's Own (C-Jay) is a swinging, poignant acknowl- edgement to The Divine One, divinely done. Whether it's "This Can't Be Love," "On the Street Where You Live" or "Send in the Clowns," Carrie embraces jazz standards with style and grace to make these gems her own.

EDDIE DANIELS JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER / JUNE 1-2 Clarinet virtuoso and multi-Grammy winner Eddie Daniels, reedman and composer Ted Nash and the Harlem headline this Jazz in the Chamber performance in the Appel Room. Although he began as a tenor saxophonist in the -Mel Lewis Orchestra, for four decades, Eddie is hailed as unparalleled on the clarinet in jazz and classical realms. Augmented by a of Helen Sung, Scott Colley and Mauricio Zottarelli, this unique ensemble will play a piece from Eddie's new trib- ute to Egberto Gismonti, Heart of Brazil (Resonance Records), but the rest will be all new material primarily written by Ted, who says: "Our desire is to incorporate the sound of modern jazz into the environment of intimate chamber music, keeping it all exciting, swinging, beautiful and challenging." YE STACEY KENT BIRDLAND / JUNE 5-9 After exhausting pages from the Great American Songbook that fit her, vocalist Stacey Kent dug into bossa novas and French chansons and embraced fresh blend material to call her own. Much of the latter was crafted over the past dozen years by Nobel Prize- winning novelist Kazuo Isihiguro and Stacey's saxophonist husband, Jim Tomlinson. Two such songs, "Bullet Train" and "," figure prominently on Stacey's latest recording, I Know a Dream: The Orchestral Sessions (Okeh/Sony). The project also features fresh tunes co-written by Jim and lyricists Cliff Goldmacher or Antonio Ladeira. Stacey's bittersweet, dreamy delivery is ideal for her timeless stories of people who feel displaced in their surroundings. She's with Jim on tenor sax, pianist Art Hirahara, bassist Tom Hubbard and drummer Anthony Pinciotti. KF JAZZ STANDARD / JUNE 14-17 Whether using clusters of notes to accent a beat or sheets of sounds to punctuate a scene, composer and trumpeter Terence Blanchard is an expert at evoking emotion. Cutting his teeth with bandleaders and Art Blakey, Terence devel- oped a voice that includes leading various size groups and composing scores for movies, as well as writing operas and incidental music for plays. Those efforts have resulted in Emmy and Golden Globe award nominations and five Grammy Awards, the most recent in 2009 for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo for the song "Dancin' 4 Chicken" from Watts. Blanchard is joined by his group E-Collective featur- ing guitarist Charles Altura, pianist Fabian Almazan, bassist Donald Ramsey and drummer Oscar Seaton as they perform selections from their most recent Blue Note release, Live. EW AMY CERVINI SUBCULTURE / JUNE 15 A member of the all-female jazz/pop vocal trio, Duchess, Amy Cervini has created a very different musical persona on her second solo album, No One Ever Tells You (Anzic), and celebrates its release at this gig. Embracing a hard-edged, bluesy sound, Amy enlists electric guitarist Jess Lewis, pianist Michael Cabe, bassist Matt Aronoff, drummer Jared Schonig and Hammond B3 organist Gary Versace. The blues- drenched results, especially on the tracks with B3, are striking. So is the perceptive choice of repertoire, which ranges from the title track and two other songs associated with 's saloon singer phase emphatically stamped with Amy's own take, to a Bessie Smith classic and songs by Blossom Dearie and Lyle Lovett. "I Don't Know," Amy's lone, outstanding original, is a torch song with a wry twist. GK DAVID MURRAY / JUNE 19-24 Once believed to be the most recorded musician in jazz, reedman David Murray spent the last two decades playing and raising a family in Paris and recording regularly with the and the Gwo Ka Masters from Guadeloupe. He made his long-awaited return to the Village Vanguard last year with his band, Class Struggle. They're preparing for their debut album with new additions to David's "Suite for Albert Murray (Stomping the Blues)" along with other new compositions. David will no doubt feature trombonist Craig Harris from his octet in the 1980s and 90s and pianist Lafayette Gilchrist, best known for his seminal work on the Baltimore go-go scene. Rounding out the band is David's son, guitarist Mingus Murray and brothers Rashaan Carter on bass and Russell Carter, drums. SHAMIE ROYSTON DIZZY'S CLUB COCA-COLA / JUNE 20 While other artists play the music, Shamie Royston lives the music. Whether she's playing a tender intro line or comping over a thick groove, the pianist, composer, arranger and devoted educator transforms the music to serve the context. Treating the piano as an orchestra, Shamie continues to create original works for a range of artists who have included, among others, Dianne Reeves, Sean Jones, Tia Fuller and . Her compositions tease out sensitivity and authentic expression, informed by a cross section of sounds and cultures. Shamie's record release party features trio mates Gregg August on bass and Mark Whitfield Jr. on drums with special guests Jaleel Shaw on saxophone and Lee Hogans on trumpet. SJ

HOUSTON PERSON HIGHLIGHTS IN JAZZ at TRIBECA PAC / JUNE 21 At age 83, is one of the most in-demand musicians, not only for his soulful, burnished , but also his great chemistry with a wide range of players. Houston came of age playing in organ groups and made numerous recordings with singer until her death in 2001. Over the past 20-plus years, he has recorded prolifically as a leader for HighNote and proved himself as a masterful bal- lad interpreter with his lyrical sound, which he utilizes much like a vocalist. Houston is playing in the final concert of the Highlights in Jazz season, which honors Russell Malone. The lineup also includes Jimmy Heath, Lewis Nash, Willie Jones III, , Gene Bertoncini, Steve Nelson, Luke Sellick and a special guest. KD

JOANNE BRACKEEN MEZZROW / JUNE 22-23 If there ever was an icon for women in jazz, it's 2018 NEA Jazz Master pianist Joanne Brackeen. Her days as a staunch innovator, standout improviser and unique compos- er go back to the late 1960s as an accompanist with Stan Getz, Art Blakey and her then-husband Charles Brackeen. Her recordings for the Choice, Tappan Zee, Concord and Arkadia labels all were met with acclaim and due respect in a post- Tyner/Corea/Hancock era. Work in Brazilian music was another sidebar to a brilliant and long-lasting career, mostly in heavyweight contemporary and progressive jazz trio settings. Her style remains delightfully quirky and unpredictable yet retains the humoresque piquant phrasings that initially identified her as an individualist. Unbelievably, she has no recent recordings, so she'll likely refer to the deep well of her considerable repertoire. MGN DAVID CHAMBERLAIN AND BAND OF BONES SAINT PETER'S CHURCH / JUNE 27 As part of the Midday Jazz Midtown series, the amazingly versatile Band of Bones, a 13-piece big band consisting of and rhythm section, plus leader David Chamberlain's and flute, plays music from its new CD, Picadillo, Yes Madly! The title refers both to "Picadillo," a track on a classic Eddie Palmieri/ album with trombonist ' solo orchestrated for eight trombones, and to the inclusion of two poems read by his granddaughter Mercedes, with music by band trombonist Chris Rinaman, and two other tracks of Ellingtonia: Duke's "All Too Soon" and 's "Chelsea Bridge." The diverse program also includes tunes by and , as well as another Latin piece fea- turing the expanded percussion section from the title track. GK

MJ TERRITO JAZZ AT KITANO / JUNE 28 Even in the diverse world of jazz vocalists, MJ Territo pops out as unique, difficult to categorize, and quite superb. Sporting a rich, slightly lower-pitched vocal range, MJ offers a phrasing that places her comfortably in the jazz, cabaret and Broadway worlds, and her singing recalls an uncommon set of vocalists from Frank Sinatra to Carol Sloane to even Mabel Mercer. Similarly, in her projects she consistently makes intelligent and unusual decisions in repertoire and approach, perhaps best encapsu- lated on her most recent album, Ladies Day (Jollie Mollie Music), by her gorgeous duet with harpist on the Dave Grusin composition "True." For fans of the entire map of the Great American Songbook and its many unusual side routes, MJ's performance with the Ladies Day Jazz Quartet is not to be missed. That versatility has served him well, particularly as he geared up to replace the legendary late Joe Temperley, the long- serving baritone anchor of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and a mentor to Paul. "He's one of those guys who sounded better with each year and I was blown away by his sound and approach," Paul remembers. "He was the heart and soul of this band, he was confident in who he was and that was one of the things that made him great." Stepping into the role previously held by Joe for decades was no small challenge, yet it's one that Paul has succeeded in doing. "I've tried to assimilate what he showed me, and I'm finding the new things I have that I can add to the band," he explains. As Paul's star continues to rise, he has also begun to expand his own efforts as a leader. "There aren't too many small group gigs for baritone players," he notes. Peter Zimmerman came across this in the Wikipedia entry about trombonist Vic Dickenson, who played with Count Basie, Sidney Bechet and Earl Hines, among others: For all his lively musical talent, Dickenson was a laconic man who often liked to be alone between sets. During his long association with bands at Eddie Condon's, he would often retire to a single chair that sat in a small alcove outside the men's room, instead of gather- ing with fellow musicians in the band room. When men mistook him for the men's room attendant and offered him money, he took it.
