***For Immediate Release*** Media Contact: Jesse P. Cutler JP Cutler Media 510.338.0881 [email protected] GRAMMY® Award-Winning Doug Beavers Releases New Album Art of the Arrangement Featuring Pedrito Martinez, Ray Santos, Oscar Hernández, Jose Madera, Angel Fernandez, Marty Sheller, Gonzalo Grau, Herman Olivera, Luques Curtis and More! New York, NY -- Tuesday, July 18, 2017 -- On his previous release, 2015’s Titanes del Trombón, the GRAMMY® Award-win- ning Doug Beavers -- as the album’s title suggested -- focused on honoring his fellow trombonists and pioneers such as J.J. John- son, Barry Rogers and Slide Hampton. The recording received universal praise with Jazzwax magazine calling it “absolutely hypnotic” and Latin Jazz Network deeming the release a “precious and significant work.” Publications as prestigious as Downbeat, JAZZIZ and Latino Magazine also joined in the chorus, each providing feature space to this magnificent project that paid tribute to some of the unsung masters of an often underappreciated instrument. At the time of the release of Titanes del Trombón, Beavers took note of the fact that many of the great trombonists of the past were also first-rate arrangers, and that steered him toward the music that now comprises his latest release, Art of the Arrangement (ArtistShare, August 25, 2017). The new collection is an homage to the greatest Latin jazz and salsa arrangers of our time, includ- ing Gil Evans, Ray Santos, Jose Madera, Oscar Hernández, Angel Fernandez, Marty Sheller, and Gonzalo Grau. Through- out the history of Latin jazz, and jazz in general, it’s the arrangers who have shaped the music, and quite often their contributions have been overlooked, or ignored altogether.

This pdf was last updated: Jan/31/2011. Randy Brecker Ensemble Randy Brecker tours Europe with a stunning performance featuring many of his own compositions as well as rearranged standards and some funky bits and pieces here and there. Line-up Randy Brecker - trumpet Dave Kikoski - piano Steve Lapina - bass Steve Johns - drums Ada Rovatti - sax On Stage: 5 Travel Party: 6 Website www.randybrecker.com Biography Randy Brecker has been shaping the sound of Jazz, R&B and Rock for more than three decades. His trumpet and flugelhorn performances have graced hundreds of albums. Randy Brecker's history is as varied as it is distinguished. Born (1945) in Philadelphia to a piano-playing father, Randy spent summers in stage-band camps where he got his earliest experience in ensemble playing. He began playing RandB and funk in local bar bands while in his teens, but at the same time he had an ear for hard bop. In 1966, he moved to New York City. Some of his first gigs upon arriving there were with Clark Terry's Big Band, the Thad Jones/ Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra and the Duke Pearson Big Band with whom he recorded 2 albums. Randy also began his foray into jazz-rock by joining Blood, Sweat and Tears. He worked with BSandT for a year and played on their innovative 1968 debut, Child is Father to the Man.Randy left BSandT to join the Horace Silver Quintet. In 1968, Randy recorded his first album as a leader, Score (re-issued in 1993 on Blue Note), which also featured 19 year-old Michael Brecker on tenor saxophone. After Horace Silver, Randy joined forces with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers before teaming up with brother Michael, Barry Rogers, Billy Cobham, and John Abercrombie to form the seminal fusion group Dreams.

  • A Conversation with Flautist, Mark Weinstein
A Conversation with flautist, Mark Weinstein On the Release of Con Alma (Jazzheads, 2007) Interview by Tomas Peña Tom: Congratulations on yet another fine recording! This is our third conversation in two years. On to Con Alma … tell me about your concept going in, and why you chose this particular group of musicians to accompany you on your journey. Mark: My notoriety in the Latin Jazz community is still based on my 1967 trombone recording, Cuban Roots, and the two sequels on flute, Cuban Roots Revisited (2001) and Algo Mas (2005). It is of an avant-garde player of Afro-Cuban folkloric-based jazz. I had also recorded a number of albums of Brazilian jazz, Tudo de Bom (2003) and O Nosso Amor (2005). I decided to make a mainstream Latin jazz album to broaden the presentation of my music and make it more radio friendly. The key was to hire one of my oldest friends in the business, Mark Levine, to perform and co-produce the album. Mark has very deep roots in Latin Jazz and is a great jazz pianist with nothing to prove. I knew any project that he participated in would be deep and musical. Once Mark agreed, we chose a selection of classic material by Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter as the core and then added other material to round out the album. TP: That would be Mark Levine’s La Coneja Loca , Santi Debriano’s Santi’s Africaleidoscope and your Broadway Local. MW: With Mark in place, I picked bassist Santi Debriano who played on two of my other records and is both a great soloist and totally comfortable with Latin drumming of all sorts.

  • ¡Toca Maravilloso! Larry Harlow and the Jewish Connection to Latin Music
CHAPTER 7 ¡Toca maravilloso! Larry Harlow and the Jewish Connection to Latin Music Benjamin Lapidus Jews and Latin Music: The Catskill Mountain Scene and New York City Jewish involvement with Spanish Caribbean dance music—also referred to as Afro-Latin, Afro-Cuban music, or simply Latin music—is not a new phe- nomenon. On the one hand, the Jewish presence in Latin America has existed for more than 500 years and Latin-American Jews have historically engaged in the cultural practices of their homelands even after they emigrated elsewhere. Throughout the twentieth century in New York City and its environs, there was a sizeable list of Jewish performers of Latin music, but very few chose to high- light their Jewishness or make it their calling card, with the exception of Larry Harlow. In order to truly appreciate Larry Harlow’s musical and cultural legacy, it is important to consider his predecessors and the links that existed between Jews and Latin music before his arrival on the scene. In an oral history of the Catskill Mountain resorts, the wife of a Catskill Mountains booking agent pointed to a direct correlation between the Jewish interest in Latin music and her husband’s trips to Cuba. Ceil Beckman Jacobs said that her “late husband, Al Beckman, played a big part in bringing about the Latin music craze in the Catskills.”1 She further explained that when the couple went to Havana for the first time in 1938, “Al was so enchanted by the beat and sound of Latin music, he brought it back to the United States.

  • Brecker and Patterns
Brecker and Patterns An Analysis of Michael Brecker's Melodic and Instrumental Devices Thesis for the degree of Master of Music Sibelius Academy (Helsinki, Finland) Department of Composition and Music Theory Autumn 1998 - Spring 1999 Ari Poutiainen © Ari Poutiainen 1999 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Brecker and Patterns - An Analysis of Michael Brecker's Melodic and Instrumental Devices ABSTRACT Only a few scientific studies or articles exist on Michael Brecker's improvisational style. The present work approaches Michael Brecker's style through a detailed analysis of his solos in the compositions "Straphangin'," "Nothing Personal," and "Peep." The approach to this analysis is similar to that of which jazz musicians use themselves. The analysis is based on selected audio material and transcriptions. David Baker's "Giants of Jazz" series was applied as a model for the form of the study. The applied theoretical framework of contemporary jazz improvisation is based on David Liebman's "A Chromatic Approach to Jazz Harmony and Melody," and various other works. In this study, the aim was to define and describe certain melodic and instrumental devices which are characteristic of Brecker's expression. In the analysis, attention was given to the melodic devices which are based on the diminished, altered, pentatonic, and augmented scales, and on the superimposed "Giant Steps" chord progressions. For the instrumental devices, the focus of the analysis was on alternate fingerings, multiphonics, and fingering mannerisms. The use of these devices was divided into functional and non-functional. Some of the devices and their usage could not be discussed deeply enough in the three solo analyses alone, and further examples were therefore traced from Brecker's other performances.

Barry Rogers Birth name Barron W. Rogers Born May 22, 1935 The Bronx, New York, Origin United States April 18, 1991 (aged 55) Died Washington Heights, Manhattan, United States Genres Jazz, Pop, Salsa, Soul Occupations Musician, Arranger, Producer Instruments Trombone, Wagner tuba Average White Band Dreams Fania All-Stars Machito Associated acts Eddie Palmieri Tito Puente James Taylor White Elephant Orchestra Born Barron W. Rogers or simply Barry Roger was borne in The Bronx, he descended from Polish Jews who came to New York City via London and was raised in Spanish Harlem. His family (original name: Rogenstein) possessed a strong musicality; his father and several of his uncles sang in the choir of notable hazzan Joseph Rosenblatt, and his mother had taught in Africa, Mexico, and elsewhere which inspired an interest in music from other nations. In addition to this foundation, the mambo and jazzgenres were simply popular in the neighborhood. As a student of the playing of jazz trombonists Jack Teagarden, Lawrence Brown and J. C. Higginbotham, Rogers began to play Latin music in the mid-1950s and would be most associated with it from then on. He developed his style working with Eddie Palmieri. Willie Colón regarded Rogers as his strongest musical influence, and would feature him in many of his productions. Bobby Valentín would feature Rogers in his classic song El Jíbaro y la Naturaleza, which lead then-singer Marvin Santiago to nickname him “El Terror de los Trombones” for the record (Rogers’ trombone tone was regarded as one of the loudest in salsa music). Rogers worked with musicians such as Palmieri, Israel “Cachao” López, Machito, Manny Oquendo, Andy González, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Cheo Feliciano, Johnny Pacheco, Manny Oquendo, Chino Rodríguez, the Fania All-Stars, and many more.
