The Nashville Jazz Workshop (NJW) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching people’s lives through jazz education and performance. For 20 years the NJW has delivered world class performances and music education to Nashville audiences and jazz fans around the country and the world. 2020 has been a challenging year for cultural institutions everywhere as they seek to fulfill their missions and remain financially viable. Fortunately, the internet has enabled the NJW to continue serving audiences and students – over 20,000 people have subscribed to the NJW’s YouTube channel to view live and archived performances and hundreds have enrolled in virtual classes since social distancing restrictions began in March. Jazzmania is the NJW’s annual jazz party and fundraiser. As a live event it has been “the jazz party of the year” and one of the city’s most engaging and fun charity events. As with other charity events, the event is moving online this year as a virtual event. On October 24, 2020 the Workshop will host Jazzmania as an online jazz party and evening of world class jazz performances. We will share our love of jazz, celebrate the Workshop’s 20th anniversary and ask our devoted fans to open their hearts and wallets to support the Workshop. The streaming event will also be targeted to a global audience, to build awareness of the NJW and engagement with jazz fans around the world. Proceeds from the event will support the NJW’s Music Education, Performance Series and Community Outreach. The 90-minute program will be hosted by renowned Memphis saxophonist Kirk Whalum, and will feature an amazing roster of world class artists, most of whom have performed, taught, or studied at the NJW: Beegie Adair, Peter Bernstein, Jeff Coffin, Champian Fulton, Jeff Hamilton, Christian McBride, Donna McElroy, Keb’ Mo’, Rachael Price and Vilray, Kandace Springs, Chester Thompson, and Victor Wooten. The array of talent is staggering: A combined 20 Grammys, 3.5 million social media followers, 41+ million streams, and hundreds of TV appearances and world tours. They are donating their time and talent in support of this unique cultural institution and this great cause. He toured with Whitney Houston for more than seven years and soloed on her single “I Will Always Love You”, the best-selling single by a female artist in music history. Whalum has recorded a series of well received solo albums and film soundtracks, with music ranging from pop to R&B to smooth jazz. His musical accomplishments have brought him a total of 12 Grammy nominations. and a Grammy award in 2011 for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”, featuring Lalah Hathaway). Six-time Grammy Award winner Christian McBride has been one of the most important and most omnipresent figures in the jazz world for 20 years. He has performed and recorded with jazz artists including McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Diana Krall, Chick Corea, and Wynton Marsalis as well as with pop, hip-hop, soul and classical musicians like Sting, Paul McCartney, Celine Dion, Isaac Hayes, The Roots, Queen Latifah, Carly Simon, and James Brown. McBride is the host of the NPR documentary series Jazz Night in America. Jazz pianist Beegie Adair is an American favorite and a Nashville treasure. Moving to Music City, she became a session musician working at WSM-TV and on “The Johnny Cash Show” (1969-71), where she accompanied such legendary perform- ers as Chet Atkins, Dolly Parton, Lucille Ball, Steve Allen, Dinah Shore, Mama Cass Elliott, and Peggy Lee. She formed the Beegie Adair Trio, which has a standing invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall every October and her trio has sold over 1.5 million albums. Keb’ Mo’ is a blues musician and five-time Grammy Award winner, including 2020’s Best Americana Album, Oklahoma. He is a singer, guitarist, and songwriter, living in Nashville, Tennessee. He has been described as “a living link to the seminal Delta blues that travelled up the Mississippi River and across the expanse of America.” His post-modern blues style is influenced by many eras and genres, including folk, rock, jazz, pop and country. Victor Wooten is a bassist, record producer, educator, and recipient of five Gram- my Awards. He has been the bassist for Béla Fleck and the Flecktones since the group’s formation in 1988 and a member of the band SMV with two other bassists, Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller. Wooten has won the Bass Player of the Year award from Bass Player magazine three times and is the first person to win the award more than once. In 2011, he was ranked No. 10 in the Top 10 Bassists of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine. 3 JAZZMANIA Jeff Coffin is a saxophonist, composer, and educator. He is a three-time Grammy Award winner as a member of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones with whom he performed from 1997 until 2010. In 2008, Coffin began touring with the Dave Matthews Band and joined the group in 2009. When not on the road, Jeff is an adjunct professor at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music and performs and teaches at the Nashville Jazz Workshop. Blue Note Recording artist Kandace Springs was born in Nashville, Tennessee and is a former student of the Nashville Jazz Workshop. She was also a mentored by Prince. She has performed live on several TV shows: the Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and the BBC’s Later . with Jools Holland. In 2020, Kandace released her third major label album, The Women Who Raised Me, which features the chart-topping single Angel Eyes with Norah Jones. Former NJW student Rachael Price is the lead singer of Lake Street Dive and per- forms with composer Vilray. Known for their playful, cross-pollinated blend of neo- soul and pop/rock, Lake Street Dive has built a loyal fan base, weaving elements of jazz, folk, and funk. Their album Side Pony landed on top of three Billboard charts: Rock, Folk, and Alternative Albums. Rachael and Vilray perform jazz, pop, and Tin Pan Alley songs from the 1930s and '40s. Nonesuch Records released their debut album in 2019, and they have been featured in Billboard magazine and NPR’s Fresh Air, and on Late Night with Stephen Colbert. NJW performer and educator Chester Thompson is a drummer, percussionist, session musician, and producer. He is perhaps best known for his work with the Weather Report, Frank Zappa, Genesis, Phil Collins, Santana and many others. Since 2011, he has been leading his own jazz group, the Chester Thompson Trio. Jeff Hamilton co-leads the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra with Jeff Clayton and John Clayton. Hamilton has worked with Ella Fitzgerald, Rosemary Clooney, the Count Basie Orchestra, Oscar Peterson, and Ray Brown. In addition, he has toured with Diana Krall and has played on several of Krall’s albums 4 JAZZMANIA Guitarist Peter Bernstein has been a part of the jazz scene in New York and abroad since 1989.
