here is a long tradition of visionaries helming record labels and presenting great artists to the public. Bruce TLundvall is obviously such a person. His 45 years in the business has put him at the epicenter of countless ca- reers and movements. After 20 years with Columbia/CBS, Lundvall has been the head of . As the President of EMI Jazz and Classics, Lundvall also oversees Manhattan, Angel and now the Narada group of labels. What follows is the first part of a freewheeling two-part interview recently done in Lundvall’s office that covers mu- sic, artists, radio and the industry. The second part will run in next week’s issue.

EMI Group/Blue Note – Tad Hendrickson Bruce Lundvall, President, EMI Jazz and Classics JazzWeek: You now do your own radio show. Bruce Lundvall: For a year now. They asked me at Sirius if I would like to do a Blue Note hour and I said that it sounded like a great idea, but could I do it from my office. I’m not a disc jockey. I have no background it in, except go- ing back to college radio. They said I’d have to come to the offices on 49th St. They told me I could put away two shows in an hour, but I knew that wasn’t the case when you start out. I’m not schooled in it. I started doing it because I figured it was good for the label, which is nice because it’s an hour commercial for Blue Note twice a week: 6-7 on Friday Nights and 9-10 on Sunday morn- ings. It’s been fun to do. Each show has a different theme – we’ll either cover an instrument, or an artist, or a style on Blue Note. Whether anyone’s listen- ing, I don’t really know. We’ve gotten some interesting emails and we’re reach- ing some people, so I’m going to continue doing it. I need a lot of editing be- cause I’m not a pro. It’s funny: we’ll go through and they’ll say to me, “Don’t use the word ‘great’ so much.” It’s how I talk in conversing with you, but when you’re on the air you have to pay attention to such things.

Is it selling records? I don’t know. All I know is that I am serving pro bono. They gave me a unit for my car, which cost me more to install than the unit costs! When were you DJ-ing in college? It was ’55 and ’56 when I was at Bucknell. It was the local college station that probably didn’t reach much more than the campus. When I was a kid I It’s a little different now. Yeah. There is a lot of very good music, programmed the way they want to not really happening program it, but there is no real focus on new releases. Does radio sell records? much any more. Yeah, of course. That’s how you find out about new releases and that’s even how you find out about catalog records you want to buy, particularly for the initiate. It’s still an important point of reference. You are also head of EMI Classics, which is the classical wing of the label. Talk radio has been cutting into classical programming as well as jazz. Are you hearing the same kind of talk from your classical people as you are from the jazz ones? Pretty much. But it’s important when [the news and arts talk shows] do a pro- file on artists, or things like that. The internet hasn’t been as important for us, but NPR has been a very effective tool for all kinds sophisticated music. Robert Glasper was the first new signing in five years, at least of an un- known artist? Well, Bill Charlap wasn’t that well known. We also have a new one coming out by Chicago singer Jackie Allen [Tangled]. We’re looking at some oth- er people as well right now. particularly with new artists. We’ve been very cautious lately, but we’re not get- ting out of the jazz business. We’re not dropping anybody. We’re looking at a number of people and a number of new ideas too. I still see you out at the clubs upon occasion. We get out at night. [Blue Note Director of A&R] Eli Wolf goes out a lot. I go out, but not as much as I used to. I just don’t have the energy anymore, but I used to go out a lot. I still do auditions, I still go out, and I still listen to our musicians and people that they are excited about. Are Glasper and Allen a beginning of a new trend in signings? I think we’re going to start signing again a little more actively. What was it about Glasper that made you want to sign him? Our in-house publicity person Cem Ku- rosman saw him and liked him. And he took me down to the Blue Note to see him and I liked Robert’s songs and I liked his playing. I thought he had a lot of origi- nality, so we put him in the studio to do a demo, which I don’t normally do. We loved the demo, and wanted to sign him and go forward, so that’s what we did. It didn’t take a long time, but we didn’t sign him on the spot. Not like I did with Jason Moran. You did? EMI Group/Blue Note Yeah. I saw him play with and Photographed at Blue Note’s Manhattan offices upon Robert Glasper’s signing with I went up to him and said: “You’ve got Blue Note are from left: Perry Greenfield (Product Manager, Blue Note Records), to be on Blue Note.” And that was that. Bruce Lundvall (CEO & President, EMI Jazz & Classics), Glasper, Tom Evered (VP & Things happen in different ways. I heard General Manager, EMI Jazz & Classics), Eli Wolf (Director of A&R, Blue Note Records) one demo from and said: “That’s it. Find yourself an attorney, I want you on Blue Note.” I heard a rumor that she saved Blue Note from bankruptcy. [Laughs.] No. No. No. Blue Note is owned by EMI. EMI would have to be in trouble. Blue Note has made a profit every year since I’ve been here. A lot of it is because of the catalog, or some of our releases that sell well enough, like a Bobby McFerrin or other things that go over the top like did for several records, , any number of people. Then you get lucky with the US3 record and McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” That did

like three million worldwide. Then Norah came along – her first one is up to 20 million and her second record is over 10 million. We’re very fortunate. She didn’t save us from bankruptcy, but she gave us a big leg up for sure. Everyone assumes that you’re just a jazz guy, but you’ve done more than that in the past. Most of our staff At Columbia I did all sorts of different kind of music because that’s what we did as a label. At CMA I was the president of the CMA board for two years in here are musicians Nashville. And I signed a lot of people: I signed rock ’n’ roll bands, not terribly or were musicians well but I did, Broadway musicals, all kinds of different things. This is a good thing because it broadens your perspective. I’m doing the Broadway soundtrack and they love music. version of The Color Purple on Angel. We’ve brought Blue Note well beyond jazz since Norah Jones because everyone wanted to be on the label. We did So music is first and , Al Green, Amos Lee. foremost in their We know Norah’s success was an aberration, but why do these people come minds. to a jazz label looking for a deal? “ The people here love music and are so into music that the artists feel comfort- able here. It’s a small group of people, but every one of them is 100% dedicat- ed. Most of our staff here are musicians or were musicians and they love music. So music is first and foremost in their minds. Friendships develop between art- ists and the staff, and it’s happened with damn near every artist on the label. Arif Mardin said it best when he said: “I was at Atlantic at the very beginning and there would be music playing from every office. There was Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd Ahmet Ertegen, and myself. We’d run from office to office listen- ing to music. It happened for a lot of years, but for the last few years at Atlantic it was more like a boardroom.” When he came here – he’s retired now – every- one listened to music in their offices. He loved that spirit and had missed it. I think that is the highest compliment we could get in this day and age. What do you look for in an artist? I try and find an individual artist. Someone who is unique and has their own voice. That is my standard for what we should do here. It’s not to find a radio record or something that sounds like some other band. For me, the only way I find to be successful is to have an artist that has their own voice. Who is spe- cial. Who has something sort of magical. Finding an artist who sounds like another artist is a waste of time. Even if you have a hit, you don’t really have an artist, so what do you have? Our standard is to maintain a high standard of musicality on the artist roster. We may not always achieve that, but most of the time we do. JW
