It is diverse, with many angiosperms, especially representatives of the clades magnoliids, monocotyledons and eudicots, which confirms the assumption that angiosperm diversity during the last part of the Early Cretaceous was reasonably high. The morphology of a new fossil monocot is studied and compared to all other Smilacaceae genus, especially in the venation. Cratosmilax jacksoni gen. et sp. nov. can be related to the Smilacaceae family, becoming the oldest record of the family so far.

Des portefeuilles renfermant des calques en mauvais état complétaient ce versement. Les documents conservés dans des chemises sans classement apparent n'avaient subi aucun tri préalable et étaient dans le plus grand désordre. L'examen de l'ensemble du fonds n'a pas permis de retrouver trace du cadre de classement propre aux archives du génie ; de plus, les documents recouvrent une période chronologique (1920-1960) durant laquelle l'organisation territoriale du service du génie au Maroc a constamment évolué : c'est ainsi qu'en 1924, il n'existait que deux directions, Casablanca et Fez, puis en 1935, s'ajouta celle de Meknès. Après la guerre, une restructuration vient encore bouleverser l'organisation existante ; une chefferie a pu ainsi dépendre successivement de plusieurs directions et les papiers d'une même affaire se trouvent ainsi dispersés dans différents dossiers. Aussi a-t-il parut plus cohérent d'adopter un classement par place qui permet de suivre l'évolution des problèmes domaniaux propres à une chefferie.

Introduction Campos & Kellner (1985b) related that references to flying reptiles from Brazil (not from the Araripe Basin) were made as early as the 19th century, but the first find from Chapada do Araripe was described as late as the 1970s (Price, 1971, post–cranial remains of Araripesaurus castilhoi). Wellnhofer (1977) published the description of a phalanx of a wing finger of a pterosaur from the Santana Formation and named it Araripedactylus dehmi. Since then, much has been published on the pterosaurs from Brazil, and there has been an increasing interest in the material from this area, resulting in an increase in scientific interest in pterosaurs in general. The plateau of the Araripe Basin, in northeast Brazil on the boundaries of Piaui, Ceará and Pernambuco (figure 1.1) was already famous for its well preserved fossils, escpacially fish (e.g. Maisey, 1991), long before the area became the most important source of Cretaceous pterosaur fossils. At present, it is the most important area for Cretaceous pterosaurs globally, although an increasing number of finds are reported from China (e.g. Lü & Ji, 2005; Wang & Lü, 2001 and Wang & Zhou, 2003). Some of the Brazilian material is severely compacted (Crato Formatin; Frey & Martill, 1994; Frey et al., 2003a, b; Sayão & Kellner, 2000) and preserved on a laminated limestone comparable to that of Solnhofen. (The type locality of most, if not all, pterosaur fossils from the Araripe Basin is uncertain, because no systematic, scientically based excavations or even surveys have been done in this area.

Near, and Jakob Vinther ABSTRACT Dating the tree of life is a core endeavor in evolutionary biology. Rates of evolution are fundamental to nearly every evolutionary model and process. Rates need dates. There is much debate on the most appropriate and reasonable ways in which to date the tree of life, and recent work has highlighted some confusions and complexities that can be avoided. Whether phylogenetic trees are dated after they have been estab- lished, or as part of the process of tree finding, practitioners need to know which cali- brations to use. We emphasize the importance of identifying crown (not stem) fossils, levels of confidence in their attribution to the crown, current chronostratigraphic preci- sion, the primacy of the host geological formation and asymmetric confidence intervals. Here we present calibrations for 88 key nodes across the phylogeny of animals, rang- ing from the root of Metazoa to the last common ancestor of Homo sapiens. Close attention to detail is constantly required: for example, the classic bird-mammal date (base of crown Amniota) has often been given as 310-315 Ma; the 2014 international time scale indicates a minimum age of 318 Ma. The Devonian of Morocco is famous for its rich occurrences of arthrodire ‘placoderms’. While Late Devonian strata are rich in arthrodire remains, they are less common in older strata. Here, we describe a large tooth-bearing jaw element of Leptodontich- thys ziregensis gen. et sp. nov., an eubrachythoracid arthrodire from the Middle Devonian of Morocco. This species is based on a large posterior superognathal with a strong dentition. The jawbone displays features considered syna- pomorphies of Late Devonian eubrachythoracid arthrodires, with one posterior and one lateral row of conical teeth oriented postero-lingually. μCT-images reveal internal structures including pulp cavities and dentinous tissues. The posterior orientation of the teeth and the traces of a putative occlusal contact on the lingual side of the bone imply that these teeth were hardly used for feeding. Similar to Compagopiscis and Plourdosteus, functional teeth were pos- sibly present during an earlier developmental stage and have been worn entirely. The morphological features of the jaw element suggest a close relationship with plourdosteids. Its size implies that the animal was rather large.
