Mariana Capdet Directora: Dra. 2 Biodiversity of sexual and asexual Ascomycetes xylophilous on native palm trees from Argentina Republic. SUMMARY A study on the diversity of species of ascomycetes on three native palms: Butia yatay (Mart.) Becc., Euterpe edulis Mart. and Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman in Iguazú National Parks in the province of Misiones and the National Park El Palmar in the province of Entre Ríos was carried out. This study was set by the need to understand the diversity of ascomycetes against the loss of biodiversity even in protected areas. Therefore the main objectives of this study were: - to identify, describe and illustrate the fungal species (in teleomorph or anamorphic) found on the selected substrates chosen, - to study the presence of ascomycetes on the different decaying parts of the palm tree and green leaves only genus Coccostromopsis was studied, - to compare qualitatively the diversity found in the two regions with each other subtropical and temperate climate, - to compare qualitatively the composition of fungal species found on the palms of communities elsewhere. During the samplings, 921 collections were observed. From them, 96 species of ascomycetes were identified, 32 of which are amorphous, 55 teleomorphs and 6 holomorphic. Five species are proposed and 57 species are first recorded from the country. Iguazú National Park and Euterpe edulis were the most biodiverse site and palm. ABSTRACT Fog oases are zones along the Atacama Desert where the regular input of fog favors the development of rich communities of vascular plants, becoming biodiversity hotspots. In these areas, the lichen biota has been poorly explored and represents one of the most conspicuous elements among the perennials organisms that form the community.

  • S1 the Three Areas of Importance for the Fruticose Ramalinaceae.FINAL
Supplementary Data S1 Three Major Ecogeographic Areas of Evolution in Fruticose Ramalinaceae Three geographical areas appear significant to the evolutionary history of lichens in arid regions. We focus on three fruticose genera of the Ramalinaceae: Nambialina (gen. nov.), Niebla, and Vermilacinia. They have adapted to obtaining moisture from fog in the following coastal regions of our study: (I) California-Baja California coastal chaparral and Vizcaíno deserts (II) South America Atacama and Sechura deserts (III) South Africa coastal fynbos and Namib Desert The botanical significance of each of these will be briefly discussed. Chapter (I) further includes updates on the ecogeographical data and evolutionary interpretation for the genera Niebla and Vermilacinia in Baja California. (I) California and Baja California Coastal Chaparral, Chaparral-Desert Transition and Vizcaíno Deserts 1. California and Baja California Coastal Chaparral The lichen flora of the Baja California peninsula (Mexico, Baja California and Baja California Sur) is pretty well known as a result of the many splendid contributions by lichenologists to the « Lichen Flora of the Greater Sonoran Desert Region » (Nash et al. 2002, 2004, 2007). The « Greater » portion extends the lichen flora to chaparral, oak woodlands, and conifer forests in southern California, northern Baja California and southern Nevada and all of Arizona; to the deserts of Mojave, Arizona, Vizcaíno, and Magdalena; and to the subtropical vegetation in Baja California Sur and Sonora, Mexico that include lowland mixed deciduous-succulent bushlands, open deciduous montane woodlands/forests, and the evergreen pine-oak woodlands/forests. California, a botanically rich and diverse region with many endemic species (Raven and Axelrod 1978 ; Calsbeek et al.

  • Sodiomyces Alkalinus, a New Holomorphic Alkaliphilic Ascomycete Within the Plectosphaerellaceae
Persoonia 31, 2013: 147–158 www.ingentaconnect.com/content/nhn/pimj RESEARCH ARTICLE http://dx.doi.org/10.3767/003158513X673080 Sodiomyces alkalinus, a new holomorphic alkaliphilic ascomycete within the Plectosphaerellaceae A.A. Grum-Grzhimaylo1,3, A.J.M. Debets1, A.D. van Diepeningen2, M.L. Georgieva3, E.N. Bilanenko3 Key words Abstract In this study we reassess the taxonomic reference of the previously described holomorphic alkaliphilic fungus Heleococcum alkalinum isolated from soda soils in Russia, Mongolia and Tanzania. We show that it is not alkaliphilic fungi an actual member of the genus Heleococcum (order Hypocreales) as stated before and should, therefore, be ex- growth cluded from it and renamed. Multi-locus gene phylogeny analyses (based on nuclear ITS, 5.8S rDNA, 28S rDNA, Heleococcum alkalinum 18S rDNA, RPB2 and TEF1-alpha) have displayed this fungus as a new taxon at the genus level within the family molecular phylogeny Plectosphaerellaceae, Hypocreomycetidae, Ascomycota. The reference species of actual Heleococcum members scanning electron microscopy showed clear divergence from the strongly supported Heleococcum alkalinum position within the Plectosphaerel- taxonomy laceae, sister to the family Glomerellaceae. Eighteen strains isolated from soda lakes around the world show remarkable genetic similarity promoting speculations on their possible evolution in harsh alkaline environments. We established the pH growth optimum of this alkaliphilic fungus at c. pH 10 and tested growth on 30 carbon sources at pH 7 and 10. The new genus and species, Sodiomyces alkalinus gen. nov. comb. nov., is the second holomorphic fungus known within the family, the first one being Plectosphaerella – some members of this genus are known to be alkalitolerant.

  • Fungi from Palms in Argentina. 1
MYCOTAXON Volume 112, pp. 339–355 April–June 2010 Fungi from palms in Argentina. 1 Mariana Capdet* & Andrea Irene Romero *[email protected] PHHIDEB-CONICET, Depto. Biodiversidad y Biología Experimental Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales, Universidad de Buenos Aires Av. Int. Güiraldes 2620, Buenos Aires C1428EHA, Argentina. Abstract ⎯ Thirteen ascomycetes are reported from Argentina from fallen woody parts of three palms in two national parks. Berkleasmium corticola, B. sinense, Brachysporiella gayana, Dictyosporium cocophylum, D. zeylanicum, Endocalyx melanoxanthus var. melanoxanthus, Ernakulamia cochinensis, Musicillium theobromae, Sporidesmium macrurum, and Stachylidium bicolor are new records for Argentina. Melanochaeta hemipsila is reported for the first time as a teleomorph in this country. Key words ⎯ fungal taxonomy, neotropical mycobiota, pyrenomycetes Introduction There are nearly 2800 species of palms in the world (Blomberry & Rodd 1982), most of which are used for food, edible oils, timber, and ornamental plants (Hyde & Cannon 1999). In Argentina, there are eleven native palms, ten of which are distributed in the northeast of the country (Cabral & Castro 2007). Many Argentine palm species are found in the Atlantic Forest, a region with great biodiversity but covering only 7–8% of the national surface (Galindo- Leal & Gusmão Câmara 2003). Several areas have been proposed as natural reserves for protection of Euterpe edulis Mart. (“palmito”), a palm species that is currently a candidate for vulnerable status (Ministry of Ecology of the Province of Misiones). Little is known about fungi on palms in Argentina. Spegazzini (1881) was the first to describe some of them, such as Ceratostoma australe [≡ Cannonia australis], a very common ascomycete on woody spathes of Butia yatay (Mart.) Becc., from a cultivated palm tree in Buenos Aires province.

E-mail: [email protected] / [email protected] Abstract In waters of the Northwestern Atlantic pelagic tunicates may contribute significantly to the plankton biomass; however, the regional information on the salp fauna is scarce and limited to restricted sectors. In the Caribbean Sea (CS) and the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) the composition of the salpid fauna is still poorly known and this group remains among the less studied zooplankton taxa in the Northwestern Tropical Atlantic. A revised checklist of the salp species recorded in the North At- lantic (NA, 0–40° N) is provided herein, including new information from the Western Caribbean. Zooplankton samples were collected during two cruises (March 2006, January 2007) within a depth range of 0–941 m. A total of 14 species were recorded in our samples, including new records for the CS and GOM area (Cyclosalpa bakeri Ritter 1905), for the CS (Cy- closalpa affinis (Chamisso, 1819)), and for the Western Caribbean (Salpa maxima Forskål, 1774).
