Nelson4 RESUMEN Los denominados oasis de neblina son áreas en las zonas costeras del Desierto de Ataca- ma donde el ingreso habitual de niebla permite el establecimiento y desarrollo de diver- sas poblaciones de plantas vasculares, generando verdaderos hotspots de diversidad. En estas áreas, la biota liquenológica ha sido poco explorada y representa uno de los ele- mentos perennes más importantes que conforman la comunidad. En un estudio previo de la biota del oasis de neblina de Alto Patache se reportaron siete especies. Con el fin de mejorar este conocimiento, se analizó la riqueza de especies presentes en el oasis si- guiendo dos transectos altitudinales en diferentes orientaciones del farellón. Aquí repor- tamos preliminarmente 77 especies de líquenes para el oasis de neblina de Alto Patache. De estas, 61 especies corresponden a nuevos registros para la región de Tarapacá, en tanto que las especies Amandinea eff lorescens, Diploicia canescens, Myriospora smarag- dula y Rhizocarpon simillimum corresponden a nuevos registros para el país. Asimismo, se destaca a Alto Patache como la única localidad conocida para Santessonia cervicornis, una especie endémica y en Peligro Crítico. ABSTRACT Fog oases are zones along the Atacama Desert where the regular input of fog favors the development of rich communities of vascular plants, becoming biodiversity hotspots. In these areas, the lichen biota has been poorly explored and represents one of the most conspicuous elements among the perennials organisms that form the community. -

Supplementary Data S1 Three Major Ecogeographic Areas of Evolution in Fruticose Ramalinaceae Three geographical areas appear significant to the evolutionary history of lichens in arid regions. We focus on three fruticose genera of the Ramalinaceae: Nambialina (gen. nov.), Niebla, and Vermilacinia. They have adapted to obtaining moisture from fog in the following coastal regions of our study: (I) California-Baja California coastal chaparral and Vizcaíno deserts (II) South America Atacama and Sechura deserts (III) South Africa coastal fynbos and Namib Desert The botanical significance of each of these will be briefly discussed. Chapter (I) further includes updates on the ecogeographical data and evolutionary interpretation for the genera Niebla and Vermilacinia in Baja California. California and Baja California Coastal Chaparral The lichen flora of the Baja California peninsula (Mexico, Baja California and Baja California Sur) is pretty well known as a result of the many splendid contributions by lichenologists to the « Lichen Flora of the Greater Sonoran Desert Region » (Nash et al. 2002, 2004, 2007). The « Greater » portion extends the lichen flora to chaparral, oak woodlands, and conifer forests in southern California, northern Baja California and southern Nevada and all of Arizona; to the deserts of Mojave, Arizona, Vizcaíno, and Magdalena; and to the subtropical vegetation in Baja California Sur and Sonora, Mexico that include lowland mixed deciduous-succulent bushlands, open deciduous montane woodlands/forests, and the evergreen pine-oak woodlands/forests. Выяснена их встречаемость в разных таксонах современной системы лишайников. Достаточно широкое распространение кустистые и близкие к ним биоморфы получили в порядках Lecanorales, Teloschistales, Lichinales, Arthoniales. Выявлены основные признаки, характеризующие структурное разнообразие кустистых форм. В различных таксонах куститстые варианты возникали параллельно на разной структурной основе. This page intentionally left blank Lichen Biology Lichens are symbiotic organisms in which fungi and algae and/or cyanobacteria form an intimate biological union. This diverse group is found in almost all terrestrial habitats from the tropics to polar regions. In this second edition, four completely new chapters cover recent developments in the study of these fascinating organisms, including lichen genetics and sexual reproduction, stress physiology and symbiosis, and the carbon economy and environmental role of lichens. The whole text has been fully updated, with chapters covering anato- mical, morphological and developmental aspects; the chemistry of the unique secondary metabolites produced by lichens and the contribution of these sub- stances to medicine and the pharmaceutical industry; patterns of lichen photosynthesis and respiration in relation to different environmental condi- tions; the role of lichens in nitrogen fixation and mineral cycling; geographical patterns exhibited by these widespread symbionts; and the use of lichens as indicators of air pollution. The lichenicolous fungi represent an important ecological group of species that form obligate associations with lichens. They have been studied seriously for over 200 years and the European species are especially well collected. However, collecting in other areas has been far less systematic and many new species await discovery. North American species are especially under-studied and this review is intended to stimulate the collection and study of these species. To encourage this study by lichenologists, we review the sorts of interactions formed by licheni- colous fungi with their lichen hosts, discuss various aspects of host speci®city, virulence, chemical ecology, and evolution of lichenicolous fungi and provide a complete taxonomic listing of lich- enicolous genera arranged as far as possible into natural groupings. In each section we suggest research topics in need of further study, and provide a listing of signi®cant literature. We hope by calling attention to the largely unexplored biodiversity of lichenicolous fungi, investigators will take up the study of these fascinating organisms. Lichens, Earth Tongues, and Endophytes : Evolutionary Patterns Inferred from Phylogenetic Analyses of Multiple Loci

Spatafora The inoperculate discomycete order Helotiales (Ascomycota) is a diverse and complex group of fungi which include lichens, earth tongues, and endophytes. Cladistic analyses of multiple loci were used to test and construct phylogenetic hypotheses and to examine the evolution of various life history strategies adopted by these fungi. Several prominent patterns of convergent evolution were revealed. Within the lichenized Helotiales, nuclear SSU and LSU rDNA data inferred two distinct lineages (i.e., Baeomycetaceae and Icmadophilaceae) representing potential independent gains of the lichen symbiosis. The common "baeomycetoid" morphology of these fungi, was shown to be the result of convergent evolution between these two distinct lineages. The correspondence of phylogenetic hypotheses from independent, multiple loci also presented reciprocal corroboration for convergent evolution of sporocarp morphology among the earth tongues. At least four independent lineages which possess the earth tongue fruitbody morphology were inferred from the three independent data sets of SSU rDNA, combined SSD and LSD rDNA, and RPB2. The close phylogenetic relationship between the earth tongues, Cudonia and Spathularia (Helotiales) and some endophytes represented by members of the Rhytismatales was particularly provocative due to vast differences in sporocarp morphology, but was nonetheless well-supported and corroborated with these forms of independent molecular phylogenetic evidence. Phylogenetic hypotheses constructed from analyses of multiple loci inferred that the Helotiales are polyphyletic, a finding not consistent with the character of inoperculate asci being a synapomorphy for this group. -
