So, What is Day? This local tradition has been observed in the Juniata River Valley for more than two centuries, carried here by an early local settler. Leg- end has it that if you eat goose on St. Michaelmas Day, you will never want for money all the year round. Believers of this tradition adhere faithfully to this tradition and eat goose every September 29th, thus ensuring wealth and prosperity for the coming year. St. Michaelmas Day was first declared a festival by Pope Gelasius in the year AD 487. The feast, which always falls on Sept. 29th, honors Saint Mi- chael the Archangel who led God’s war against evil in the biblical book of Revelation. What do blackberries have to do with Goose Day? Goose Day is the American version of Michaelmas, a Christian festival ob- served on September 29. It honors Archangel Michael for defeating Satan in the war in heaven. It is said that when St. Michael threw the devil from heaven, he fell from the skies and landed in a prickly blackberry bush. Sa- tan cursed the fruit, scorched them with his fiery breath, stamped and spat on them, so that they would be unfit for eating. Folklore suggests that Michaelmas Day is the last day to eat blackberries. 12 All month- Home- stead Cultures Sept. 24-25- The Bus – Your Local Home Town Brewery will feature will have special draft pricing on all 12 craft beer lines at blackberry their 101 S.
