  • Freedom and Chaos Contemporary Albanian Literature
FREEDOM AND CHAOS CONTEMPORARY ALBANIAN LITERATURE Robert Elsie Never in Albanian history have there been so many books on the market and never has so much Albanian literature, prose, poetry and other genres, been produced and published. Never has freedom of thought and creativity reigned throughout the Albanian world as it does today. And yet, it is often said that Albanian literature still finds itself in an age of profound crisis, of loss of identity and of disintegration. From the 1980s, when I first started to take an interest in Albanian literature, and up until the end of the 20th century, it was always possible to keep abreast of Albanian-language publications, to know what had been published, virtually every book, and to know what Albanian intellectuals thought of the works and authors in question. The Stalinist dictatorship imploded in 1991 and the Albanians, after forty-five years of total isolation from the rest of the world, as if they had been living on a different planet, found themselves robbed of any chance they might have had at keeping up with the rest of Europe. In material terms, they had been deprived of all but the barest essentials needed to stay alive. It is difficult for the foreign observer to appreciate what the people of Albania went through when the only world they knew, i.e. the awesome political system set up by the communist aristocracy, and the economy and social order which arose with it, collapsed and was initially replaced by... nothing. For writers and intellectuals it was a period of relief, of joy and of apprehension.

THE SECOND COLLABORATION Keywords: Albanian drama theater, stage, rehearsals, post World War II 1948-2008 BETWEEN ALBANIANS DURING THE Albanian drama, etc. EIGHTIES Actress, Director Rozina Kostani Professor at University of Arts, Tirana - Albania Abstract The second collaboration between Albanians happens with ―Nita,‖ a production by writer Josip Rela and director Serafin Fanko. Our journey will take us to the Albanian Drama Theater in Skopje, in 1980. The event takes place eight years later. In 1972, the first Albanian director invited by the Theater of Nationalities was Kujtim Spahivogli, who put on stage ―Korça Carnivals,‖ a comedy by Spiro Çomora. Then, during a 10-day-visit of the delegation of the Theater of Nationalities Skopje, in Tirana, in 1973, two plays were put on stage: ―The Gone‖ and ―Korça Carnivals.‖ In 1980, he was the second and last director, invited by Albania, until after the 90ties, when Albanian totalitarian regime fell. The director, Serafin Fanko, together with set designer, costume designer and notable painter Ksenofon Dilo, put on stage the drama ―Nita,‖ of the Arbëresh author Josip Rela; its premier took place on May 10, 1980 in the Albanian theater drama in the Theater of Nationalities in Skopje. Director Serafin Fanko is the first director who put the national flag in the Albanian drama set, which caused commotion in the Macedonian government and the police tried to stop the performance, but they weren‘t successful due to the pressure of the public.

INTRODUCTION Preservation and cultivation of national identity is a fundamental human right. First and most important sign of this identity is the mother tongue. Learning mother tongue in school means also learning about culture of the origin and its elements. Preservation and development of national identity is difficult in living conditions outside motherland1, and this is manifested much more in younger generations, especially among children born abroad. Therefore, the school is the most appropriate institution to developed and teach-learn linguistic and cultural competence with professional care, therefore, this school is already known as Albanian School of Supplementary Learning in Diaspora. Curriculum of Albanian School of Supplementary Learning in Diaspora, primarily is dedicated to Albanian children and youth (students) living abroad. This document is part of the permanent aim of new generation awareness raising in relation to the language and culture of origin, as an advantage, and in particular their personal and national identity, while on the other hand, a support for their integration in the society where they live.

  • Text Publication Qazim Shemaj's “Veronica's Dream”
78 Text Publication Qazim Shemaj’s “Veronica’s Dream”: A Contemporary Albanian Fairytale Kristin Peterson-Bidoshi Union College “There is a proverb both in Montenegro and in North Albania: ‘Every herb has its disease; every disease has its herb.’” [Durham 1923: 131]. Introduction: A Brief Overview of the Socio-Political Factors Contributing to the Development of Contemporary Albanian Literature Until 1991 Albania had long been the most rigidly controlled and impenetrable country in Europe. Ruled by the Stalinist leader Enver Hoxha for over forty years, Albania eventually turned away from her Communist allies, the Soviet Union and finally even China, preferring to go it alone. It is not surprising, therefore, that little was known about Albania outside of her borders. Communist Hoxha's death in 1985 and the fall of communism throughout south central Europe led to widespread changes within Albanian society. In 1991 the Albanian government began to seek closer ties with the West in order to improve economic conditions, and initial democratic reforms including multi- party elections were introduced. In 1992, following the sweeping electoral victory of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha became the first democratically elected President of Albania. Berisha began a deliberate program of democratic reform and launched an ambitious economic reform program meant to transform the country's centrally planned economy into a market economy. His comprehensive package of structural reforms included privatization, enterprise and financial sector reform, and the creation of a legal framework for a market economy. It was during this time that Albanian writers and intellectuals experienced a period of relief, joy and apprehension [Elsie 2005a: 4].

[This part of the interview was conducted on October 20, 2018] Part One Kaltrina Krasniqi: Shkelzen, start with an introduction, first where were you born? When? Where? Then tell us a bit more about the place where you were born and your family. Shkelzen Maliqi: I was born on October 26, 1947 in Rahovec. It was a strong winter with a lot of snow. My father was there on duty and I lived there for two months.
