file IL COMBO v2 for PDF.doc updated 13-12-2006 THE INDUSTRIAL LOCOMOTIVE The Quarterly Journal of THE INDUSTRIAL LOCOMOTIVE SOCIETY COMBINED INDEX of Volumes 1 to 7 1976 – 1996 IL No.1 to No.79 PROVISIONAL EDITION www.industrial-loco.org.uk IL COMBO v2 for PDF.doc updated 13-12-2006 INTRODUCTION and ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This “Combo Index” has been assembled by combining the contents of the separate indexes originally created, for each individual volume, over a period of almost 30 years by a number of different people each using different approaches and methods. The first three volume indexes were produced on typewriters, though subsequent issues were produced by computers, and happily digital files had been preserved for these apart from one section of one index. It has therefore been necessary to create digital versions of 3 original indexes using “Optical Character Recognition” (OCR), which has not proved easy due to the relatively poor print, and extremely small text (font) size, of some of the indexes in particular. Thus the OCR results have required extensive proof-reading. Very fortunately, a team of volunteers to assist in the project was recruited from the membership of the Society, and grateful thanks are undoubtedly due to the major players in this exercise – Paul Burkhalter, John Hill, John Hutchings, Frank Jux, John Maddox and Robin Simmonds – with a special thankyou to Russell Wear, current Editor of "IL" and Chairman of the Society, who has both helped and given encouragement to the project in a myraid of different ways. None of this would have been possible but for the efforts of those who compiled the original individual indexes – Frank Jux, Ian Lloyd, (the late) James Lowe, John Scotford, and John Wood – and to the volume index print preparers such as Roger Hateley, who set a new level of presentation which is standing the test of time.

Born out of Tragedy and Riddles, his lineage traceable, unerasable, back through the great houses of Chapelon, Giffard, Stephenson, Belpaire and Watt, the Duke was laid to rust by the sea, a few meagre miles from the mills that shaped the steel that formed the frames that bore the machine that Crewe built. Time passed and the Duke was made well again by kindly strangers.

We have Part 1 of Andy Robert’s trip to Sardinia in May, and a swathe of book reviews, including a very comprehensive piece by Roger Hepworth. Hopefully we can get Roger to write more articles for us. Also, we are indebted to Ben Burrows, as he regularly sends me snippets – sometimes there just isn’t the space to include them, but this time I’ve trawled through some old notes and we have a very interesting collection of “bits”. Peter Mann provides an article reminding us that it is 30 years since Michael Portillo reprieved the S&C line (Editor’s apologies for not including this in the last issue). Also, Reminiscences from Bob Watson, and photos from Michael Leahy – it all adds up to a bumper edition. Keep it going, all of you!! No more Thomas Cooks tours – the company has gone into administration. What a sad end for a “national treasure” that was founded in the early days of railways and was so closely associated with railways for all its life (and for all our lives).

  • Eastleigh and Brighton Drawings on Microfilm for Merchant Navy and West Country/Battle of Britain Locomotives
Eastleigh and Brighton Drawings on Microfilm for Merchant Navy and West Country/Battle of Britain Locomotives Description: This list of drawings from Eastleigh and Brighton Works covers the period from 1919 to 1964. It includes all the drawings that the Museum is currently known to hold for Merchant Navy and West Country/Battle of Britain locomotives in both their original and rebuilt form. It also includes a number of drawings that apply to other classes of locomotive. The Eastleigh drawings are from the main Eastleigh series and are arranged in chronological order with an E prefix. They also include a series of boiler drawings from the North British Locomotive Company for the first ten Merchant Navy locomotives. The Brighton drawings are from the W series and are arranged in chronological order with a W prefix. This series of drawings was begun in 1924 in the Waterloo Drawing Office of the Chief Mechanical Engineer and later continued at Brighton. Most of the drawings refer only to the order numbers to which they apply. The Merchant Navy and West Country/Battle of Britain locomotives were built in eight batches to separate order numbers and it is important to remember that most drawings refer to specific orders rather than to the whole class or classes. In general the order numbers seem to have been accurately recorded but in some cases it is clear that the drawing also refers to further orders. It is also clear that where many of the later drawings refer to West Country class they include Battle of Britain as well (and vice-versa).

His subject was '34092 - The City of Wells Story' and, as he had been closely involved with the restoration and operation of the locomotive over many years, we looked forward to learning more about its exploits - and we were not disappointed. John began with an illustrated outline of the locomotive's history. One of the 'West Country' Class 4-6-2s, designed by O.V.S. Bulleid for the Southern Railway, No.34092 was not completed until after Nationalisation, leaving Brighton Works in September 1949. The earliest photograph he had traced was of the brand-new 'Pacific' on a train near Folkestone, with its nameplates boarded over pending its formal naming as WELLS in our City on the 25th November 1949. Despite its name, however, No.34092 was allocated for the first dozen years of its existence at Stewarts Lane shed in London and worked on the Kent Coast lines, frequently hauling the prestigious 'Golden Arrow' express.
