Phenomenal: two boilers, smoke-stack to the side, tender with moveable coal bunker covers – as the 2011 Club model, the Franco-Crosti Photo: Hartmut Seehuber class 50.40 loco will impress you by its unmistakable profile. Apart from that, the imposing era III steam locomotive stands for the technical refinements of the time.

An outstanding example of detailing and prototype accuracy is the deck: the fine checkering meets the eye at first glance – and looking closer, we notice the finely-formed pipes, and the fact that this component is also part of the engineer's floor. The frame is of high-quality die-cast zinc. "And it's not an articulated frame either, it's made in one casting", Hoffmann continues. "By the way, we do color the centers and the edge right up to the tread, as in the prototype – otherwise the tread would look much too deep". After all the components were designed, a physical 3-D model was created from the data by stereo lithography using lasers to clarify the technical design details of the running gear. "The running prototype checked over in wind and limb by the Technical Quality Assurance because after all, it has to negotiate all the turnouts and dead sections", is the way Efficiency highlight: thanks to the exhaust-gas pre-heater underneath the main boiler, the class 50.40 Hoffmann refers to the careful checks the achieved up to 20 percent savings in the coal needed as this was very expensive in those post-war years.

Club model in N gauge: freight locomotive 50 1503 with flat ejector Monument to a spirit of innovation For three years, steam loco 50 1503 was adorned with an unusual smoke stack: the DB experiment with the coal-saving Giesl exhaust ejector. the fuel. In June 1955 therefore, the DB tested the patented ejector system of Dr. Adolph Giesl-Gieslingen, design chief of the renowned Vienna locomotive factory of Floridsdorf. A class 50 freight loco, 50 1503 built by Henschel in 1941, is the sole DB locomotive to be fitted with the Giesl ejector. The principle was that seven blower jets arranged from front to back like a fan increased the smoke box vacuum and thus improved efficiency: an increased flow of oxygen in the combustion air encouraged burning. Visible sign of the unusual multiple-jet flat ejector: the typical flattened smoke stack. This unique test of the innovation now has a fitting memento well worth seeing on the layout in the shape of the Trix Club model 2011 in N gauge. The main thing is action: the modules of the Worms N-Railroad Fans are packed with light and sound effects. The fireworks display for example at the traditional Worms Baked Fish Festival is a real crowd-puller at exhibitions, as club chairman Benno Sahre (photo above left) assures us.

Portrait: N-Railroad Fans Worms Light attracts people The N-Railroad Fans Worms (NBFW) aim to make an impression with colored, unusual and illuminated modules. One of the digital operators' most successful creations so far is the traditional Worms Backfischfest (Baked Fish Festival) with giant wheel, fairground rides and booths – fireworks over the fairground and sound effects all attract the younger generation.

The model railroaders get together every fortnight to chat about their latest achievements and ideas, and to discuss plans for visits to forthcoming exhibitions and trade fairs. The club generally exhibits its modules to the public with operations on the spot once or twice a year. "The particular hit with all our visitors is the module of the Baked Fish Festival", says Sahre. The annual folk- and wine-festival in Worms comes to an end with a firework display, and the N gauge experts have even modeled Worms in miniature: the old town possesses a day- and a night rhythm, each one of which is that with fiberglass cable and LEDs. In principle, we make sure we have a balance between action modules and peaceful modules", is how Sahre outlines the concept, which also includes the idea that the demonstration layout tells stories. Now numbering 43, the club's modules cover a wide range of subjects. Whether it's a pop concert, drive-in cinema or old town – there are no boundaries to creativity. Operation of the layout is completely digital. "The trains accelerate realistically and we can generate running sounds and smoke like on the prototypes and the lights can be turned on and off during the run", says Sahre. Generally, the club principle of digital operation is the reason behind there being such a high proportion of relatively young members active in the club. Description: N gauge locally

Organization If you want to visit the round table of the N gauge Fans Worms (NBFW), you don't have to be a member of the club. But you ought to join if you want to take part in module building, excursions or in their modeling days. Twice a year, the N-gaugers put on an exhibition of their modular layout. Members meet every two weeks, always on a Monday, in the "Black & White" bistro to plan the next club activities and to cast a critical eye over their rolling stock.

History In 2003, four model railroad enthusiasts met up to indulge their passion for N gauge. They very quickly decided to join forces to build modules together and create a purely digital model railroad layout. Since then, the club has grown to 23 active members aged between 14 and 60. The NBFW layout has now been displayed at over ten major events.

Exclusive Annual Car for Trix Club members Real pottery from the clay pit In the mid-19th century, the famous Schwandorf Clayware factory appeared almost out of the blue within a very few years. The driving force: suddenly, the village was on the railroad. Connection into the railroad network facilitated the distribution of "Bricks and earthenware products" over long distances.

The community of Schwandorf in the Upper Palatinate, had agreed to the founding of the "Regally Privileged with just about 2,000 inhabitants, cheerfully built a station joint-stock company of the Eastern Bavarian Railroad", thus in 1859 – three years earlier, King Maximilian II. of Bavaria giving the starting signal to rail infrastructure development. Railroads of course are seen as measures for boosting the economy - and in Schwandorf at a stroke the steel arteries of the economy start to pulse. The community, previously more or less agricultural, now makes its fortune with dirt: in the precincts there is a highly productive clay pit. In 1863, a master bricklayer, a businessman and a metal merchant are granted a concession to produce clayware as "Josepf Loell et Companie". The "Chronik and Topography of Schwandorf" in 1866 illustrates the connection between railroads and the economy: "The convenient transport location of Schwandorf encouraged the building of a magnificent brick and clayware factory (…). The factory is operated by a steam machine doing the work of eight horses". Six coal-fired furnaces in the factory enable the daily production of 6000 bricks, and on top of that "ornamental building products, other earthenware, figures Smoking stacks: the Schwandorf factory worked with coal. and drainpipes".

Green parts of the lands- cape are first treated to undercoating with umber tinting color from the DIY market. Then follows a coat of colored white glue.

The colored white glue just applied acts as an adhesive for the following greening. Before that, some coarse- 1 grained sand is scattered. 2

Turf scatter from the Noch range is an alternative to grass fibers. First some turf ground flock "fine/fall" is applied.

With several turf colors such as weed, olive and brown the surfaces are given a variegated, fall-like appearance. A tea-strainer will make 3 the job easier. 4

For further detailing, more adhesive must be added. Some wetting agent sprayed on will help make sure the surfaces take up the adhesive.

Well-diluted white glue is applied in isolated patches with a pipette. Here some additional greenery or some small stones can be 5 scattered. 6

To represent the floor covering such as mosses, lichens and weeds, there are suitable coarse ground flocks in the colors brown and medium and dark green.

Following treatment of the plaster rocks with different colors, the edges are then brushed over with an almost dry brush and pale colors. This accentuates the struc- ture of the rocks.

To fix bushes, trees and shrubs, these are positioned in small holes. The layer of plaster is easily driven 9 through with a metal needle. 10

The delicate, fall-colored bushes we have used here are from the range of the company Mini-Natur. The material is plucked and put in place with white glue.

The fir trees too are Mini- Natur products. They are available either as kits or as finished models in 11 various different designs. 12
