TheCreechleasesagacontinues! Thebriefingmeetingwithoursolicitor(whenIwassupportedby AndyCookeandDavidWood)washeldasplannedon30June, followingwhichhesentalettertotheParishCouncilsolicitors formallyinvitingthePCtoajointmeetingwithTMEtobeattended alsobyeachparty’ssolicitor.Theaimwastoresolveoutstanding issuesinonesitting.Noreplyhasyetbeenreceived(24September) . 3 Regularcontacthasbeenkeptwithoursolicitorandinformallywith thePCChairmanthroughoutAugustandSeptember.Thelatter has indicatedtheydonotwishtoincurmorelegalexpenses;andthat theyarepreparedtovarytheleasetotakecareofTME’s concerns. Howeverwehavemadeitquiteclearthatweneedtoseetheactual termsinwritingbeforecommittingTME. Generallyrunningdaysthisyeararebeingsupportedbetterthan hithertoalthoughthe2daysinAugusthadtobecancelledowin gto thepoorweatherandlackofpeopleonsite.Atothertimeswehave 4 hadsteadyflowsofpassengers,rarelyqueuingyetproviding comfortablyloadedtrainsmostofafternoonsuntilatleast16.30. Usuallyweareabletoofferachoiceofthankstothe contributionsmadebyAllenWellesley -Miller,TimHims,Tony NewberryandTonyGosling.

MentionhasalreadybeenmadeoftheCreechfundaybutthiswas alsonotableforhaving2significa ntvehiclederailments,fortunately withoutinjuries.Onewasduetodisplacementofanbearing leadingtoexcessiveaxlewearandfracture;theotherdueto breakageofacastironwhen2/3ofitsflangewaslost.These wheelsetsweresecondhan dandhadbeenwellusedwhenTME acquiredthemfromtheGreatCockcrowRailwayinSurrey.

Theseincidentsaffected2oftheTMEvehicles,oneofwhich sustainedbodyworkdamage.As2sparewereonsiteithas beenpossibletoreturntheotherveh icletoserviceandtoaddathird thankstoitsloanbyMarkHartnell.Theaimthiswinteristorebuild allthebogieswithnewsteelandnewbearingsincastiron axleboxesplusrepairingthedamagedvehicle.

ThanksareduetoTimGriffithswhohasspentsometimerepairing theride-onmowerand,alongwithMikePinkneyandTonyGosling oftheThursdaygang,hasalsotak encareofweed -killingand keepingtheedgestrimmedtidily.Thewholesiteislookingmuch betterthisyear.

Howeverinview oftheleasesagaonlygoodhousekeepinghasbeen takingplaceandsomeoftheheaviersitejobswewantedtodohave beendefer red.Insidetheworkshopworkiscontinuingonthe2 Hymeklocos.and,thankstoDavidHartland,aHarrisonlathehas beeninsta lled(whichauthorisedmembersmayuse)togetherwitha heavierdutybenchdrill.

5 Report from Vivary Park

WehavemissedafewrunningdaysatVivaryaswe'vebeenat steamralliesbuttheweatherhasmainlyfavouredusatVivaryand customhasbeengood,withlotsof"new"peoplewhohavefoundus forthefirsttime.IthasbeengoodtowelcomePamMartinbac k and,blessher,shearrivedbearinggifts -hercakesalwaysgodown atreat!Wehaven'tseenJohnandMaddieClarkforawhilenow, andwemissthem,butit'snicetoseePetertherewhenhecanmake itandweallwishhisparentswell.

TauntonFlower Show(whichunfortunatelyclasheswiththeWest SomersetRailwayRallysowecouldn'tmakeit)provedpopularas always –despitethesinglebutabsolutelytorrentialheavyrain showerontheSaturday.TheSundaywasalsoarunningday,with goodweather, andwentverywell.

TheTuesdayeveningsessionshavebeenwellattended,provingthat somebodyhadagreatideathatbenefits membersandmakesfora goodsocialsummerevening.Thefirstrunningwason8thJuly,in lovelyweather.Therewasagreatturnout(28!)andseverallocos. BobRichardssteameduphisThompsonB1forthefirsttimewhich wasmuchadmiredbyall!Itwas verygoodtoseeDavidSpicerback atlast,afterfinallyreturningtohisfloodedhomeinFordgate,near Moorland.SubsequentTuesdayswereveryenjoyablebutthefinal runningendedinspectacularfashion!

Onlytwolocosturnedupandoneofthesewas thereforasteam test.ThatleftJohnPickering,whocouldplayawaytohisheart's content.Inordertosavetheeffortofputtingintheextrasections thatcrossthefootpaths,itwasdecidedtoleavethemoutandshunt backandforth. 6 Johnwasshuntingbackwardswhenhetotallyforgotthattheextra sectionwasnotinplaceandpromptlydrovestraightoffthe"cliff's" edge,andendedupsittingontheground.Therewasconsiderable damagetohisridingchassisbutfortunately,hisloco wasunscathed. Heisfullyawarethathewillneverlivethisdown!

ThereisanofficialreportonCLUBLECelsewhereinthisissuebut itwasgreatlyenjoyedbyallandtheweatherwasgreat.Sadlythe earlierdatemeantthatitclashedwithsomeothere ventsandonly threepeoplewithlocosturnedup.OneofthesewasMarkSweet whohasbeenbenefitingfromtheTuesdaypractises -andprovedit whenhetookhis3½”gaugelocoandpassengersroundthetrack non-stopforthefulltwentyminutes,earninga cheerandapplause fromeveryone.

AsPhilstillhadplentyofsteamhedidn'twanttowasteit,sothe "bonus"offinishingea rlymeantthatwecouldofferridestothe public,evenstartinghalfanhourearlierthanusual.Wehadno officialticketssowefoundabookofraffleticketsandusedthem. Theintentionwastofinishat3.30pmbutitwasalovelydayand Philcarriedonnon-stopuntil4o'clock–whenbothheandhisloco werejustaboutworntoafrazzle –butatleastitmadesomeextra, unexpectedrevenuefortheClub.

Onceagain,itwasapleasure toopenthetrackforthe annualvisitoftheWellington Pre -sch oolchildren,on Tuesday23rdSeptember. Theyspentanhourtakingit inturnstotravelandhad greatfunpressingthehooter onDavidWood'sengine, which,incidentally,isvery loud! DaveWoodwithsome happypassengers 7 Severalmembersarrivedatthe"crackofridiculous"togreetthe BreanSteamersonThursday18thSeptember,onlytofindoursel ves stillwaitingafterlunch,withnonewsormeansofcontactingthe visitors.Itturnedoutthattherehadbeenachangeofdate –ofwhich wewereunaware.

AweeklatertheBrean Steamersarrived.A friendlygroupwithno lessthansixengines.It wastreattoseesomany followingeachother aroundthetrack– watchedbyadelighted audiencefromthe children'splayground! SomeTMEmembers tookadvantageofthe offertodriveadifferent AbusydayatVivary! locofromtheirusual modelandanotheryear'svisitwasover alltooquickly.

Ihavebeenaskedtodescribesomeoftheitemsdisplayedatour littledoinEastDevon.Iamprobablythebestpersontoaskasonly Iknowwhatisinmystores!

Commencingwiththelargest,theShepherd’sHut.Itwaspurchased inMontacuteasarestora tionproject.Ithadbeenbuiltlocallybya farmer/carpenter;thiscouldbededucedbytheeconomiesinthe construction.Ihav ephotographsoftheoriginaluser.Inlatteryears itwasverywellusedbytheyoungergenerationasasocialpoint – asindic atedbysomerevealingartworkonthewalls.Itwasatotal rebuildandfinallyfittedwithacastironrange –theportablety peso suitedtothemoonlightflitfromrentedaccommodation,theother typewasbuiltintothemasonryofthebreastso not portable.

Inthesameareathereweretwodecrepittractors –theseareindaily use,notawaitingthescrapman.Theyare aMasseyFergusson35X andaDavidBrown995andworththreetimestheiroriginalprice.In closeproximityavisitorfromSome rsethadaGutbrodhorticultural tractorof1960’sera,singlecylinder4-strokepetrolenginesovery popularonthecontinent forsmallfarms,completewitharangeof implements.

ClosetoTim’sMGB,andaveryniceonetoo,wasanMGMidget – roundwheelarchand1275cc.Atotalrebuildandnewbodyshell.A lovelypieceofworkbyLondonRoadGarage –ourfriendTrevor, nowre tiredfromthemotortrade -owner,theladyofthehouse. AnotherexampleofhisworkwastheMorris1000pickup,known locally asHorace. 9 Duringthecourseoftheafternoonwehadamostpleasantsurprise intheformofasympatheticallybutimmaculatelyrestoredSt andard 10motorcar.ThisvehicleisownedbyBernard,alocalvillager.It rekindledcourtingdaysamongstsomeoldermembersoftheClub.

Nowwecometothesheds,well,wheredoIstart?MrRayYeowith hisusualattentiontodetailgavedemonstrationsofhowtogetthe bestoutofhisownbuiltQuornT&Cgrinder;whocoulddoit better?However,whenIsaidIhada14BAdie thatcoulddowitha bitofatouchuphebecamequiteforceful.

Onesectionoflampsandstoves,dareIcallit‘paraphernalia ’,had someinterestingexhibits.Didyounoticetheoillamptobeusedas adarkroomsafelightwhendevelopingphotosonlig htsensitive paper?Photographyhasgonefromnoelectricitytoallelectricityin acentury.Also,aTilleylampstyleheater,withacopperreflectoris unusualanditworks.Thesmallfoldingpicnicstove,asmall Primus,isgreatfunonamoorlandwalk .

Therewerealsosomestationaryenginesforinspection.A1918, ListerLpetrolengine,verypopularforbarnuse,couldbeseen. Interestingfeatureisthattheheadandtheblockareallinonecasing althoughthevalvescouldbeaccessedthroughplugs.Indamp conditionscondensationcausedmanytripstothefiresidewiththe plugandmagnetoforagooddryoutinanattempt togettheengine running.However,helpwasathandwiththedieselengine.The ListerColdStartwasagodsend,andisstillmadeinIndiaandused allovertheworld.Mostoftheseengineswereusedforwater pumpingandpowergeneration,Start -O-Matic ringabell?,they wereeasystarters.Twowereondisplay,bothasingleandtwin cylinder –CS6andCS12.

10 Clublec – Efficiency Competition 2014.

Thisyear’seventwasheldon31stAugust.Theweatherwasvery warm,withlotsofmemberspresent,butunfortunatelyonlythree locomotiveswereentered.

FirstonwasIanGrinterwithhisRoyalScot.Ianmadeagoodstart with10passengersandadog,an dcompleted15lapsnon-stop.Phil Mortimer,thereigningChampion,followed,withhisBritanniaand againwithtenpassengers,andcompleted14½laps.Finally,Mark Sweetenteredhis3½inMaisie,andcompleted12¾lapswithtwo passengers.Thefinalscoringwasasfollows:

Onceagain,PhilMortimerandtheBritanniahavetriumphed, burningverylittleco al(andincidentallyboilingverylittlewater). Hetakesthetrophyforanotheryear.MarkSweetenteredtheonly 3½”locomotive,andsincethereisanawardforthewinning3½” locoatClublec,andhiswastheonlyentry,thenhewinsthataward! Hissco re,of5.1wasverycreditableforasmallengine.

Icoulddescribeitintwowords. Completefailure

My5”gBritannia,Bodge of Oman,waspreparedandloaded intothevanandIsetforth,withIanGrinteronSundaymorning 13thJuly,todomybestinIMLEC2014hostedbyBournemouth& DistrictModelEn gineeringSocietyattheirtrackinLittledown LeisureCentregrounds.

Unloadedandpositionedinthesteamingbayeverythingwas completedexceptforlightingthefire.Ihadplentyoftimetowatch someoftheothercompetitorsdotheirrun.Whentheap propriate timecameIlitthefire,gotsteamupandmovedontothetrackfor mystartat13.40hrs.

Dynamometercarcoupledwit hfourtrolleyssoIcouldpull12 peopletotal.Readyfortheoff,Iopenedtheregulator,westartedto moveandthenIcouldnotclosetheregulatortostopthewheels fromspinning.Three10baboltheadsthatholdtheregulatorbracket onthebackhead claddinghadsheared.Thatwastheendofmy IMLEC2014attempt.

ThereisamuchhappierendingbecauseIwasallowedtohave arun afterthepresentation.Becausemyfailurewasamechanicalone,I couldrepairtheproblemandgiveamemberofTheGrave send Societyaride.Repairscarriedout,ImettheGravesendmember, Graeme,andwentoverthecontrolswithhim,becauseIhad been toldhewasacompetentdriver,sohecouldalsodrive Bodge. 12 Steamup,onthetrackwithtwotrolliescoupledandGraemesitting behindme,IdroveforaboutfourlapsandthenIlethimta kethe controls.AfewothermembershadaridewhilstGraemewas driving,andIthinkheachievedaboutsevenoreightlapsbef orewe cameoff.Yesheisacompetentdriver.

Itwasaprivilegeto bedrivenbyGraeme becauseheisa severelydisabled Afghanistanwar veteran.Hehasjust finishedbuildingan 0-4-0Scampwitha saddletank.Another locomotivehehas builtisaSimplexalso withasaddletank. Graemedrovethe GraemeatthecontrolsofPhil’sBritannia. Scamproundthetrack forthefirsttimeon Saturdayevening.Healsodriveslocosbelongingtoothermembers ofhisclub. OurworthyeditormentionedacoupleofOily Rag!s ago aboutbatteryelectriclocomotivesandwhethertheygaveinterest andsa tisfactionintheirconstruction.

Well,hereismystory.Yearsagomyemploymentbroughtmeinto contactwithbatterymobilit yvehicles –thecompanyIworkedfor 13 madearound500peryear.Therewererugged,effectiveand powerful,buttooexpensiveandthebusinessfailed.Whatthework diddohowever,wasleavemewithanumberofbatteries, controllersandmotorsforafutureproject.

Myobservationsofbatter yelectriclocomotivesin5and7¼in gaugestendtofallintotwoclassifications.Eithertheyareofscale outline,welldetai led,butnotverypowerful;ortheyarepowerful andheavybutbearlittleresemblancetoanyscaleprototype.IfI weretobuil dabatterylocoIwasdeterminedthatitshouldbea faithfulscalemodelbutshouldhaveasmuchpowerandweightas couldbe included–‘aWolfinSheep’sClothing.’

Thekeyissueistheneedtogetthemotorandthebatteriesintoa scalebodyoutline.Thecommonapproachistoplaceasmallmotor betweeneverysetofwheels,geareddirecttothe,andseveral manufacture rscaterforsucharrangements.Iwasinadifferent position–Ihadonelargemotortofitintomydesign,butit presenteda similardifficultytothosefacedbymodellersin00 gauge -themotoristoolargetofitbetweenthewheelsandmust protrude intothebodywork.That,ofcourse,leaveslessroomforthe batteries.

TheyearswentbyasImusedaboutthisissue,butthen alocomotive cameupforsale.ThiswasamodeloftheDrewry0-6-0204hp shunterofwhichatotalof141oftheselocomotives werebuilt between1948and1961andseveralhavebeenpreserved.

Themodelforsalehadbeenmadeasoneofthetramway locomotiveswhichwerefittedwithsideskirtsforworkingdownthe streetinYarmouth–forthatreasonthebuilderdidnothav eto constructthemotionworkandindeedthemodelhadbeenbuiltasa simple4wheelchaindrivechassisundertheskirt.What attracted me,however,wasthesteelbodyworkwhichhadbeenmadeexactly toscale. 14 Idecidedtopurchasethe model,keepthebodywork butdiscardthechassisfor anotherproject.

Iwouldthenbeableto constructanewchassistothe correctdesignwithallthe couplingrodsandthe jackshaft,andfititwithmy Theprototype. motorandbatteri es.Careful measurementsfollowedandI wasdelightedtofindthatthemodelclass04bonnetwouldjust coverthetwotractionbatterieswithjustatinyclearanceoverthe batteryterminals.Themotorcouldonlygoupright,whichwould meanitwouldstick rightupintothe,butinthispositionwas justclearoftheundersideofthecabroof.Themotorwouldbe directlyabove thejackshaftandifIcouldfindasuitablerightangle geardrivethenthejackshaftwoulddrivethecoupledwheelsexactly as ontheprototype.

Iwasabletoinspectoneofthepreservedlocomotivesat Toddingtonandtookanumberofmeasurementsandmany photographs.Thegeneralarrangementofthemodelwasdrawnon CADandIhavepointedoutbeforethebenefitsofthisinte rmsofa newmodeldesign.Everythingcanbedrawninaccurately,withas muchdetailasisrequired.Themotorwasdrawnintheonly possiblepositionandthebatteriesjustaboutfilledtherestofthe space.Therewasjustroomforavacuumpumpandair hornpump (althoughthetrumpetsthemselveswouldhavetobeunderneaththe axles).thedrawingshowsthesideelevation.Follo wingthepolicy ofmakingeverythingheavy,butstillgenerallytoscaleshape,I designedtheframesfrom8mmthickx100mmste el,andthebuffer beamswere6x½in

15 Constructionstartedwiththeframes,bufferbeamsandstretchers. Thelocomotiveisonly40”longbutIcouldnotevenlifttheframes. Thiswasgoingtobeaheavylumptomove!Axleboxesweresawn andmachinedfromalargelumpofcastiron(whichbega nlifeasa powercollectorshoefromaSouthernRegionelectrictrain),andthe wheelsweremachinedfromsolidslicesofmildsteelbar. Theshapeoftheseisrathercomplexandthemoreyoulookthe

Class04GeneralArrangement. morecomplextheyare.Ittooksometimetosortoutasuitable programmeforaCNCmachinetocompletethemachining, (andIadmitIhadsomehelpinthisfromacolleagueatwork). Firstlyanaluminiumblankwasmachinedtoconfirmthe programmeandthe nallsixwheelsweremachinedfromthesteel blanks -balanceweights,spokes,crankpinholes -allinonego. Thebigchallen ge,however,wasthatawkwardrightangledriveon thejackshaft.

16 Themotorwasa500Wnominalpower,drivingtheoutputshaftvia aninternalgearboxat430rpm,drawing6ampsat24voltsnoload . Thewheelsare5½indiametersoifthedrivewere1:1thismeanta topspeedof430x5.5x3.14=7426inchesperminute,or6.9miles perhour.Thisseemedalittlefastfor7¼gauge,soIwasreally lookingforadrivetothejackshaftofabout1:1.5.Ihuntedhighand lowinthemarketforasuitablegearbox.Intheend,allIcould reallyfindwereloosegearsandthesew ereneveroftherightsizeor ratio.IwasgivensomeMinidifferentialgearswhichwerecloseto 1:1.5butthesewereawkwardtomountinthespace.IntheendI usedapairofbevelgearsfrommyownoddsboxandsettledforthe 1:1ratio.Perhapsthelocowouldbefastaswellasheavy!Iwasable tomounttwocombinedneedlerollerandthrustbeadingsinto flangesoneachside,insidetheframes,anda20mmshaftpassed throughthesetoformthejackshaft.Outsidetheframestherearethe scalecrankswiththeircharacteristiclargesizewebs.Themotoris fittedwithanextensionshaft runningina11/2inballrace andthe bevelgearswhichIhad toboreouttofiteachshaft. Thephotoshowsthefinished gearingwithcoverremoved. Themeshingofthesebevel gearswasabitofaproblem anditwasonlyaftertwotrial fitsandattendantre -machining thatIwashappywith the Thefinishedgearing running.Couplingrodand connectingrodswereconventionalandbeingineffectan0-8-0 therearefourlotsofquartering androdlengthstogetwrong!All waswell,however,thanksinparttotheabilitytoaccurately measurethepitchoftheaxles withabigmicrometerandthenusea digitalreadoutonthemilltoaccuratelyspacetheboresinthe couplingrods. 17 Theinstallationof batteriesand controllerwas straightforward afterIhad decipheredthe controlelectronics (Ihadfoolishly neveracquireda wiringdiagram withallmy hoarding Locowithcabremoved–notethetemporary activities).The wiringarrangement batteriesrequired aplasticcoverto befittedasthete rminalsweresoclosetotheinsideofthebonnet. ThelocoranwellonthebenchandthenIwasjustintimetovisit MartinRickitt’slinein Augustforashorttest.

Threethingshavepromptedmyputtingfingertokeyboard:one, youreditor'scommentsaboutelectricallypoweredlocos (The Oily Rag!,Nº117);two,agiftreceivedbychance,ofa largeboxofbitsfora3½"gauge,Bassett -Lowke,0-6-0tank engine;andthree,myloveofsteamplusthejoysof“looking”. LBSC'swellknowndistinctionbetweenlocomotivemodelsand miniaturesisfo undedonthecoredifferencebetweenthemethodof propulsion.Arguably,amodelispropelledbyanymeansanda miniaturerepli catestherealthing. 19 MyHOloftactivityis manifestlymodelling whilstmy3½"gauge Pacificisaminiature -the formerisforlookingat andthela tterisforwater, coalandsteam.But,the distinctionbecomes blurredwhenconsidering myGauge1,spirit -fired andbattery -powered ApostwarSNCFChapleonlocomotive locos -nocoalordiesel, HOscalemodelbytheauthor notaminiature?

At11+in1951Iwasallowedonetermdoingwoodworkand metalworkbeforebeingplacedintheacademicstreamforever.In thosefar -offdaystherewasnoquestionofconsultationorchoice andsomyschoollifewasdefinedintermsofpreparationfor university,allofwhichwasveryrewardingandenjoyable. However,myloveofallthingsmechanical,especiallymotorcars andrailwayshadtobesatisfiedintheearlyyearsbypassingtoolsto myfather's feetstickingoutfromunderthefamilymotorand followingtheIanAllan,trainspottingroutesofamiliartomanyof usofacertainage.FrequentvisitstoLondonandtheScience Museumgavemetheopportunity,inthebasement,topressfree buttonsandwatchWalschaertsvalvegearrotatingonthedelightful, glasscaseminiatureswhichweresomuchmoreimpressivethanthe Horn byDubloonthediningroomtable.

Fastforwardto1976.TheHeadofEngineeringatthecollegeat whichIlecturedwasanex -Ashford,locomanandsomycunning plantoproducea5"gaugeB1washatched.Heagreedtodivideup alltheconstructionworka ssyllabusprojectitemsforthestudents andIwouldsupplyallthecastings,drawingsandspecialistbitsand pieces. 20 Allwentwellforafewyearsandarollingchassisandtenderwere soonlookinggood.AboilerfromCheddarandacabfroma TonbridgeMESmemberchangingfromB1toS15madetheproject reallystarttotakeshape.

Then,mygreatchumreachedretiremen tagein1982andthe incomingHofDwasbesottedwithcomputers,CNCandallthat. Thesyllabuschangedandsteamengineswere certainlynotonthe spreadsheet.Itwasatthispointthatmyonetermofmetalwork camebacktohauntandirritatemetoaco nsiderabledegree.Iknew thatIdidnothave,norcouldIacquirethenecessaryskillsand precisiontosatisfymyhyper -critic aleyesinordertocompletethe B1andso,afterabriefbutpainfulassessmentofthesituation,Isold thehalf -finishedbeau tytoagentinScotlandwhowoulddothe necessary. Fastforwardagainto 2005andachance buildingadvicevisit byNeville Watts, Chairmanofthe Crowborough LocomotiveSociety whospottedmyG1 layoutintheback gardenand questionedmynon- presence attheCLS. Theanswerwasmy Aspiritfiredsuburbantanklocomotive joiningandayear Ontheauthorsgauge1layout. laterbecoming Secretaryandthe chance,onceagain,toburnmyfingersonaweeklybasisduringthe runningseason.

21 Nowfortheboxofbits.Acolleaguefrommanyyearsearlierhad rememberedourstaff -roomconversationsaboutsteam.Atthe school,wherehehadtaughtengineeringformanyyearshebegana studentprojectinthe1960stobuildaBassett -Lowke,0-6-0tank engineat3½"gauge.Theprojectstalledafterverylittleworkhad beencompleted.InDecember2012,havingdecidedtoemig rateto benearertohisgrand-childrenhewasclearingouthisgarageand wonderedwhattodowiththebarelystartedB-Llocomaterialsand castings.Hemademeakindofferwhich,ofcourse,Icouldn't refuse.GivenmylackofengineeringabilitiesandourSociety membershavingprojectsandlocosoftheirowntoworkon,it lookedasifebaywasthreateningasensibleandprofi tablesolution. ButthenIhadadaftthought.Ilove“looking”aswellasdrivingand soIaskedmyselfadefiningquestion:wh ynotbuildthelocoasa batterypowered,radio -controlleditemwithafewwagonssuchthat inmyadvancingyearsIcansitandfiddlewithcontrolknobsand joysticks,watchingHOintheloft,G1inthegardenand3½"atthe clubtrackwhilststillgetti ngburntfingersforaslongaspossible. Apartfromthis,Ihaveanincurabletendencytopreservethings fromthepastwhenth ereisamanifestneedforrestorationor completion.

Theforegoingisreally backgroundtosetthescene forasortofapology fornot buildingalivesteamer. Withlittleornoengineering skillsbutalifetimeof modelmaking,kit -building andmodifyin g,Ireasoned thatIcouldjustconceivably scaleupmyOO,HOand G1fiddlingtoproducethe Thenewlocofromtherear superstructurefortheB -L

22 loco.Withinvaluable assistancefromourmost experienced,Society modelengineerwhohas machinedthecouplingand connecting rods,the wheels,axle -boxesand horns,Ihavecobbled togetherthemain -frames, madesomebufferbeams andsetaboutthe Batteryelectricinfrontlivesteam superstructure -thelatter behind instyrenesheet -anda boilerbarrelfromapieceofwastepipewhichisjusttheperfect diameter andfelloffoneofNeville'sson'slorries. Notyetfinishedatthetimeofwritingandstillalotofcosmetic Walschaerts todo,itisgivingmemanyhoursofrewardingand challengingwork,mostofwhichisout-of-the-headsinceIknowof noothersimilar3½"gauge,battery -poweredloco.Wormandwheel gearboxcamefrom"HPCGears",12vmotorfrom"Cornwall Models",andR/C equipmentadaptedfromG1locosalreadyinmy possession-plentyofroomforallthisinsidethe"boiler"barrel. TherunningchassishasbeenaroundourCrowboroughtrack withoutanyserioushitchesandsoIamcautiouslyoptimisticthat therewillonedaybesomethingworthwatching.Itremainstobe seenwhat,ifanything,thisdoesforyoureditors"mixedfeelings aboutbatter yelectriclocomotives". ToendwhereIbegan,withLBSC'sdistinction.Perhapsthisproject couldbeseenasamodelofaminiature;batterypoweredbutradio - controlledand,therefore,somethingtowatchratherthansomething tohaulpassengers.Theima geofaminiaturewithlargehumansis certainlyavisualblotonthetrackbutminiaturesareaboutdoing whereasmodelsareab out“looking”. 23 Machinery in my Life byRayRolt

Onthe’Rack’ No,notthe’medieval’kind,Imeanthe’mountainrailway’kind! Duringtheschoolholidaysinthesummer,weregularlyspenttime inWales.NormallywewouldstayanightatAberystwythandgoon the‘ValeofRheidol’line,thenrunbyBritishRailways,thengo furthernorthfortheTalyllyn,FestiniogandSnowdonMountain Railways.TheSnowdononehadaspecialappealtome,not justfor it’sunusualmethodofoperationbutbecauseitwasstillperforming it’soriginalfunctionasacommerciallinerather thanbeinga ‘preserved’line,muchasIsupportedthis‘movement’.

Intheearly‘90’s,wemadeseveralvisitstoAustria.Initially,this wastoseethe‘Zillertalbahn’narrowgaugerailway,thesourceof rollingstockfortheWelshpoolandLlanfairLig htRailway.We bookedintoahotelinMayrhofenandtravelledonthelineto Jenbach.Thiswasthejunctionforthemainline.T herewesawthat therewasanothernarrowgaugelineontheothersideofthe mainline.Thiswasthe‘Achensee’rackrailway,wh ichIhadheard aboutbutdidnotrealisewasinthesamearea.Thefollowingday, wereturnedtoJenbachtotravelonthisline.

The‘Achenseebahn’istheoldestrackrailwayinEuropeanduses thesimpleRiggenbach“ladder”racksystem.Builtin1889,it connectsJenbachwiththeAchensee,alargelakeonly6kmaway but400mhigher,inasidevalley.Becauseonlythefirstsecti onof thelinerequirestheuseoftheracksystemonanaveragegradientof 1in7.7(13%),thesteamlocomotivesusedareoft herack/adhesion typewithageareddrivetoajackshaft,withcouplingroddriveto

24 thetwoaxles,withtherackpinionslocatedontheaxlecentres.The locosareofthe0-4-0Ttype.

Themethodofoperationis forthelocomotivetopropeltwolong wheelbase4wheeledcoachesuptheracksection.Thenthelocois attachedtothefrontofthecoachesandhaulsthemtothelake,using adhesiononly.Toreturn,thelocoisattachedtotherearofthe coaches,butaf terhaulingthembacktotheracksectionitremainsat thefrontforthedescenttoJenbach.Afascinatinglinewellworth seeing.Afewyearsago,therewasamajorfireintheengineshed whichdestroyedoneofthelocos,butIbelieveitisstill100%steam workedandareplacementlocoisbeingbuiltusingpartsofthe originalone.

Ataboutthistime,itwasreportedthatSLMofSwitzerlandwere designinganewgearedracksteamlocomotivewithRogerWaller beingtheengineerresponsibleforthis.Beingoneofagroupof ‘international’engineerstryingtopromotethesteamlocomotivein anupdatedform,workingforSLM hefocusedontherack locomotive.Marketresearchindicatedthatseveralrackrailwaysin Austria/Switzerlandcouldbeinterest edinanewreplacementfor theirageingfleet,despitesomeattemptsatadieselreplacement.As SLMhadsuppliedmostofthe oftheracklocosworldwide,a potential‘market’existed.

Thedesign‘criteria’tomakeitcompetitivewithadieselalternati ve wasrationalised:-

(1)Onemanoperation. (2)Availableatshortnotice. (3)Abilitytohandlemorepassengers. (4)Useequivalentfuelwithsimilarefficiency. (5)Reducedmaintenance.

Tohiscredit,RogerWallerhasbeenabletoachieveallofthese. 25 ‘Oneman’operationispossiblebyusinglightfueloil,readily controlledbythedriver,withasimilarfuelconsumptiondueto reducedheatlosses,superheating,greaterefficiencyduetothegear driveandwithimprovedpollutionemissionduetoextern al combustion.Numberofpassengers,usingtwolightweightcoaches, increasedfrom60toover100at12km/hr,insteadof7km/h r, comparedtooriginalsteamlocos.Allweldedsteelboilertoreduce weightandmaintenanceandimprovedmechanicallubricatio nto reducepreparation.Byusingelectricwaterheaterovernight coupledtoboiler,pressureinboilermaintainedtoallowinstant operationofburnersforrapidrecoveryoffullboilerpressureand reducestressesinboiler.Anaddedfactoristhetouri stappealof steam,eveninit’smodernform.

Knowingthatoneofthefirstlocomotiveswasgoingtothe “Schafbergbahn”inAustria,areturnvisittoAustria,thistimetoSt Wolfgang,wasbookedthefollowingyear!Thankstothelovely sceneryandwalking,mywifeanddaughterwerehappytoreturn!A bonuswhenvisitingrailways!!WhenwearrivedatStWolfgang,a disappointment!Thenewlocomotivehadbeenshippedtotheother rackrailway,the“Schneebergbahn”,nearVienna,forevaluation testsagainst theirdieselunits,andwouldfinallyarriveaboutthree weekstoolateforus!

Thougha disappointment,the sightoftheexis ting steamlocomotivesat workwaslike watching‘mechanical dinosaurs’!Their originalchimneyhad beenreplacedbya ‘GieslEj ector’, TheoldlocomotiveatSt.Wolfgang

26 DevelopedbyDr.GieslGeislingenanAustrianengineer.Thiswas extensivelyfittedtotheremainingsteamlocomotivesinAustri aand tosomelocomotivesworldwide.Itwasaveryeffectivedesignof blastpipeofflat‘fan’shapedappearance,givingimprovedvacuum inthesmokeboxwithreducedbackpressure.Thisgaveincreased powerandareductioninfuelconsumption.Inthisco untry,in additiontofittingtonumerousindustriallocos,itwasalsofittedtoa 9F2-10-0andan‘original’BulleidPacific “Spitfire”,toenablean improved‘sparkarrester’tobefittedwithoutdetrimenttothe drafting.MikeJohnswasinvolvedinth efittingofthisto“Spitfire” andconfirmsthatitwasveryeffective,givingimproved performanceandfueleconomy,resulting inarecommendationthat itbefittedtotheremaining‘original’Pacificsasthecostscouldbe recoveredbyfuelsavingsintwoyears.Thiswasnotactedupon,but whentheownersof“CityofWells”,another‘original’Pacific, preservedontheWorthVa lleyLine,didso.Itproduced‘legendary’ performancesonthe“mainline”untilit’sprotractedoverhaul,now completed. Fitted onthe ‘Schafberg’,it enabledthe fittingofa ‘sparkarrester’ inviewofthe extensiveforest belowthe‘tree line’.Thisis hingedback ontothesideof thechimneyon Thecleanerlinesofthemodernloco. thedescent.

Thefollowingyear,wemadeathirdvisittoAustria!!Thistime successandwewereabletoseethenewlocomotiveinaction. 27 Ithasaverycleantraditionaloutlineandisfittedwithamock ‘Kobel’sparkarresterchimney,apparentlyattherequestofthe drivers,toactasa‘silencer’duetotheexhaustnoiseofthehigh velocityexhaust!

Unfortunatelyno‘handson‘experien cehere,aswiththetraction engines!Ihadtosettleforgeneralobservations.Sittinginthe bottomoftherearcoach,facing thefrontoftheloco,Iwasableto makeobservationsoftheentireascent.Throughtheentireascent, therewasafaint‘wisp ’ofsteamatthesafetyvalve,indicatingthe idealconditionsoffullboilerpressurewithoutlossofwaterand fuel,exceptforonebriefliftingofthesafetyvalve,presumablyto testtheoperatingpressure.Thisdemonstratedthefineburner control.

Usingobservationofthepositionofthe‘dieblock’intheexpansion linkasaverycrudeguidetothe’cut-off’beingused,it appearedto beabout20-25%ontheeasiersections,lengthenedtoabout35- 40%onthesteepestgradients.Thisshowedtheadvantageofthe geareddriveoverthedirectdriveoftheexistinglocos,as demonstratedwiththegeared‘Sentinel’locosinth iscountry.

Atthelowerterminus,thedriverconnectedanextensionpipetothe ‘blowdown’valve,directeddownontotheground,andoperatedthe valve.Whetherthiswasdoneoneachtriporonceaday,Idon’t know.

Today,the‘Schafberg’is100%steam operated,usingafleetof thesemodernlocos,withthreeoftheoriginalonesretainedfor ‘heritage’trains,ata‘supplementary’charge.TheSLMwassoldto anothercompanywhowerenotinterestedinfurthersteam development,andanewcompany‘DLM’w assetup,withRoger Wallercontinuingtodevelop‘modernsteam’projects.
