Russophilia and Russophobia in Bulgaria: Discourses Bridging Past and Present RUSSOPHILIA AND RUSSOPHOBIA IN BULGARIA: DISCOURSES BRIDGING PAST AND PRESENT By Iris Belensky Submitted to Central European University Department of International Relations In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in International Relations Supervisor: Professor Michael Merlingen CEU eTD Collection Word Count: 17, 231 Budapest, Hungary 2018 Abstract This thesis seeks to bring to light the influence of Bulgaria’s identity construction, with reference to its historical relationship with Russia, upon the debate and negotiation of current foreign and domestic policy issues. In order to do this, the thesis first delineates the basic discourses of Russophilia and Russophobia that developed over the course of Bulgaria’s historical relations with Russia and the ways in which they construct the Bulgarian Self with relation to its Russian Other. The thesis then examines the arguments made in two contemporary policy debates – the debate over the mandatory inclusion of the communist period in Bulgarian school curricula, and the debate over the ratification of the Istanbul Convention - assessing them for the structuring influences of the motifs and logics of the basic discourses of Russophilia and Russophobia. The thesis finds that the basic discourses of Russophilia and Russophobia continue to act as conditions of possibility and structuring agents within contemporary policy debates. However, the development of these debates has had an effect on the discourses as well – emphasizing incompatibility between Russophilia and Russophobia, and thus polarizing the discourses. Whether Russian influence is conceived of in terms of military force, through direct intervention or cyber warfare, or in terms of political influence, through the funding of right-wing parties and the popularizing of illiberal discourses, the question has become a polarizing one both on the international level, and within numerous domestic contexts.1 The concern over Russia’s role on the international stage became a pronounced characteristic in North American and European politics in light of the annexation of Crimea and has since been reflected both in these regions’ foreign and economic policies, and in their media.2 The question of Russian influence is particularly prevalent and persistent within Central and Eastern Europe both because these regions represent the spaces of contact between the EU and Russia and because of these countries’ recent history with Russia in the context of the Soviet space. While these factors are certainly worthy of attention, the meanings that they hold for the corresponding states and their populations are then mediated by the discourses that have developed about the states’ relationship with Russia over the course of history. Consequently these discourses have established a structural longevity of their own which continues to infuse the geopolitical realities of different Central/Eastern European states with a variety of meanings. The impact of these longstanding discourses upon Central/Eastern European states is demonstrated in the striking diversity that can be observed amongst contemporary discourses on Russia both between and within said states. This diversity can be attributed to the plurality of identities that emerged within the region and the variable ways in which these identities are renegotiated over time while being caught between two historically constituted axes of power – Western Europe and Russia.4 As these discourses on Russia are deeply entwined with the way that some Central/Eastern European states conceptualize their identity and position on the international stage, the tendency of geopolitical analyses to overlook them

    BUILDING CULTURAL BRIDGES: BENJAMIN BRITTEN AND RUSSIA Book Review of Benjamin Britten and Russia, by Cameron Pyke Maja Brlečić Benjamin Britten visited Soviet Russia during a time of great trial for Soviet artists and intellectuals. Between the years of 1963 and 1971, he made six trips, four formal and two private. During this time, the communist regime within the Soviet Union was at its heyday, and bureaucratization of culture served as a propaganda tool to gain totalitarian control over all spheres of public activity. This was also a period during which the international political situation was turbulent; the Cold War was at its height with ongoing issues of nuclear armaments, the tensions among the United States, the Soviet Union, and the United Kingdom ebbed and flowed, and the atmosphere of unrest was heightened by the Vietnam War. It was not until the early 1990s that the Iron Curtain collapsed, and the Cold War finally ended. While the 1960s were economically and culturally prosperous for Western Europe, those same years were tough for communist Eastern Europe, where the people still suffered from the aftermath of Stalin thwarting any attempts of artistic openness and creativity. As a result, certain efforts were made to build cultural bridges between West and East, including efforts that were significantly aided by Britten’s engagements. In his book Benjamin Britten and Russia, Cameron Pyke portrays the bridging of the vast gulf achieved through Britten’s interactions with the Soviet Union, drawing skillfully from historical and cultural contextualization, Britten’s and Pears’s personal accounts, interviews, musical scores, a series of articles about Britten published in the Soviet Union, and discussions of cultural and political figures of the time.1 In the seven chapters of his book, Pyke brings to light the nature of Britten’s six visits and offers detailed accounts of Britten’s affection for Russian music and culture.

It is worth mentioning that many scientists from various countries wrote about N. Wassilko, but separate studies about his life and political activities have not been written yet. Author paid considerable attention to the formation of N. Wassilko's political views, the evolution of his preferences from conservative Rusynism and Moscophilia philosophy to the populistic doctrine. Since the beginning of the 20th century, N. Wassilko became almost the sole leader of Ukrainians in Bukovina. The article presents the analysis of his activities in the Austrian Parliament, the Diet of Bukovina, public organizations, and his initiatives to resolve various regional issues. His activities in the years of World War I were equally rich. In particular, the article shows his diplomatic activities as the ambassador of the ZUNR (West Ukrainian People's Republic) in Vienna, the ambassador of the UPR (Ukrainian People's Republic) in Switzerland and other countries. At the end of the research, the author points out the remarkable path of N. Wassilko in the history of the Ukrainian movement in Bukovina in the early twentieth century, as one of the central figures of the Ukrainian diplomacy during 1918-1924.

Bibliography 273 Abstract The nation-state is now the dominant form of sovereign statehood, however, a century and a half ago the political map of Europe comprised only a handful of sovereign states, very few of them nations in the modern sense. Balkan historiography often tends to minimize the complexity of nation-building, either by referring to the national community as to a monolithic and homogenous unit, or simply by neglecting different social groups whose consciousness varied depending on region, gender and generation. Further, Bulgarian and Serbian historiography pay far more attention to the problem of "how" and "why" certain events have happened than to the emergence of national consciousness of the Balkan peoples as a complex and durable process of mental evolution. This dissertation on the concept of nationality in which most Bulgarians and Serbs were educated and socialized examines how the modern idea of nationhood was disseminated among the ordinary people and it presents the complicated process of national indoctrination carried out by various state institutions.

In this article, I will study the ways in which heritage is used to construct politically engaged collective memories and contemporary Russian cultural policies, which promote such uses. In particular, I will analyse the transformation of the 2013-2016 Moscow Manege exhibitions into an entertainment centre called ‘Russia––my (hi)story’, which is promoted by the Russian Orthodox Church and supported by the authorities. Another case presented herein is the Gulag History Museum in Moscow. My aim is to demonstrate how the cultural heritage is being ‘applied’ to construct historical narratives of the difficult past and what is the relation of cultural policies implemented by the state to this process.

Far from being “ancient hatreds” the communal conflicts that emerged in Macedonia in this period were a result of the ongoing processes of nationalization among the different communities and the competing visions of their national projects. These conflicts were greatly influenced by inter-imperial rivalries on the Balkans and the combination of increasing interference of the Great European Powers and small Balkan states of the Ottoman domestic affairs. I argue that autonomy was a multidimensional concept covering various meanings white-washed later on into the clean narratives of nationalism and rebirth.

Ao mesmo tempo, várias obras fazem sucesso até hoje em dia. O filme da DEFA de mais sucesso desde sua estreia em 1973 (com mais de 3 milhões de espectadores) até hoje é A lenda de Paul e Paula2. Heiner Carow conseguiu capturar no seu filme uma sensação de vida que não só impressionou o público dos anos 70, mas que prende os espectadores de quase todos os tempos. Seu filme Coming Out3 também marcou a história do cinema: a trama de um professor jovem que descobre sua homossexualidade não só quebrou vários tabus, mas também teve sua estreia em Berlim Oriental no dia 9 de novembro de 1989, dia da queda do Muro.

G. 26, 2 (2015) Forum The Female Body of Jewish Suffering: The Cinematic Recreation of the Holocaust in the Bulgarian-East German Co-Production “Zvezdi/Sterne” (1959) Nadège Ragaru Distancing itself from earlier studies, recent scholarship on the cinematic representa- tion of the Holocaust has demonstrated that the portrayal of anti-Jewish persecution has not remained taboo throughout the socialist era in Eastern Europe.1 A segment of this scholarly literature has explored the gendered dimensions of the filmic rendering of Jewish victimhood and agency in Eastern Europe. In a recent contribution, for instance, Anke Pinkert has investigated the changing depictions of Jewish manhood in GDR cinema with a view to “re-examin[ing] discourses of victimisation and perpetration”.2 Focusing on the interpretation of womanhood in film, the present arti- cle aims to contribute to the growing body of literature by tracing the inception, mak- ing, and reception of “Zvezdi/Sterne” (Stars), a Bulgarian-East German co-production directed by Konrad Wolf. The film, which was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Festival in 1959, tells the story of an impossible love between a German Unter- offizier and a Greek Jewish woman who was detained with other Jews from Bulgarian- occupied Western Thrace in a Bulgarian transit camp, pending deportation to Poland. 1 On the Soviet case cf.
