New York University in Buenos Aires Introduction to Latin American Studies Fall 2011 Professor: Martín Sivak Email: [email protected] Classroom and Course Schedule: Wednesday 17.15 to 20.30. Office Hours: Wednesday 4 pm and upon request. Description of the course: This course is designed to introduce students to some of the most important problems and debates about Latin American history, society and culture. Latin America is a complex region full of contrasts. Its population is both racially and culturally heterogeneous. Its many countries share some common cultural roots and political origins, but also have distinct histories. National histories and individual societies did not always follow parallel paths. We will consider the general as well as the specific paths, and study the successes, failures, contrasts and future challenges facing the region. The structure of this course is primarily chronological but also thematic. We will start with the Conquest and its legacies and we will end with the problems that we experience today in big cities in Latin America. We will pay particular attention to the enduring legacies and challenges of some specific historical issues, such as slavery and entrance of Latin America into global capitalism. As the course favors a multi-disciplinary approach, we will use a different array of materials including films, letters, photographs and essays. We will emphasize first hand accounts of the topics we discuss. REQUIREMENTS AND EVALUATION: You are required to do the assigned reading in advance and come to class prepared to participate actively. The required written work for the course consists of: Homework One short reaction (not more than two paragraphs) to the readings of the week, focusing on the primary sources. -

Esta aproximación biográfica, reconstruida con información verificada en fuentes primarias y en la crítica divulgada, per- mite comprender la participación de Carolina Freyre en el escenario cultural y en la política nacional. Se plantea que las 189 influencias de su esposo Julio Lucas Jaimes la favorecieron y ella pudo mostrar su talento y ser reconocida como escritora. 1 Actualmente es predocente de la especialidad de Historia en dicha uni- versidad. Sus investigaciones se orientan a la presencia femenina en el espacio socio cultural en Lima de fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Vol. LXIII, Niums. 178-179, Enero-Junio 1997; 219-229 GENERO Y SUJETOS NACIONALES: EN TORNO A LAS NOVELAS HISTORICAS DE LNDAURA ANZOATEGUI' POR FERNANDO UNZUETA The Ohio State University Las novelas y una multiplicidad de discursos, paralelamente a la labor de instituciones educativas, laborales, religiosas, de costumbres y practical sociales, participan en la producci6n de sujetos sociales, m.s o menos disciplinados. 2 Las novelas cortas de Pablo de Olavide, por ejemplo, representan situaciones y personajes que promueven los ideales de la moral cristiana; con el mismo dejo iluminista, El PeriquilloSarniento de Jose Joaquin Fernndez de Lizardi, adem.s de reformar a un picaro ("decente") y convertirlo en un "hombre de bien", esboza los valores de un incipiente liberalismo burguds. A lo largo del siglo, al mismo tiempo que se asume que todos los individuos deben tener las mismas virtudes y oportunidades, el sujeto "universal" se va diferenciando. En textos cada vez mas nacionalistas, se perfila claramente un sujeto hegemonico, el ciudadano (activo): hombre mayor de edad, letrado y/o propietario, en goce de todos los derechos constitucionales de los que carecen las mujeres y otros sujetos subaltemos (indigenas, esclavos, menores, analfabetos, etc.).3 Asimismo, los sujetos se constituyen en tdrninos de una dicotomia gendrica; es decir, se prescriben distintos (y hasta opuestos, aunque supuestamente complementarios) papeles sociales y culturales basados en las diferencias sexuales. VOL. 15, NUM.1 WINTER/INVIERNO 2018 Periodismo y círculos literarios femeninos en la Sudamérica decimonónica: El caso de Carolina Freyre de Jaimes (1844- 1916) en Bolivia Kurmi Soto Velasco Carolina Freyre es simplemente una mujer que ha escrito y escribe sin ofender a nadie. “Carolina Freyre.” El Correo del Perú, sábado 28 de diciembre de 1872. En 1996, la peruana Francesca Denegri afirmaba algo novedoso para aquel entonces: la existencia de una dinámica red de escritoras peruanas que sentaron pie dentro de la literatura decimonónica a través de periódicos y revistas.1 En su estudio, titulado El abanico y la cigarerra. La primera generación de mujeres ilustradas en el Perú, ella rastrea el “surgimiento de la voz literaria femenina” y muestra las profundas conexiones que tuvieron mujeres como Juana Manuela Gorriti (1818-1892), Clorinda Matto de Turner (1852-1909)2 y Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera (1842-1909). Dentro de este grupo, también destaca la tacneña Carolina Freyre de Jaimes (1844-1916), hija de una conocida familia de imprenteros y periodistas de la costa peruana.3 En efecto, su padre, Andrés Freyre Fernández, fundó y dirigió varios títulos entre los cuales debemos mencionar La Bella Tacneña de 1855, en el que Carolina publicó sus primeros poemas a los catorce años. Desde este momento hasta su muerte, su vida estaría ligada al periodismo, oficio al que se dedicó en Lima, La Paz, Sucre y Buenos Aires, así como en varias otras ciudades sudamericanas. Para comprender mejor a este personaje es, por lo tanto, necesario tener en cuenta el aspecto fragmentario de su producción, dispersa en hojas volantes, y, a la vez, constatar que este mismo hecho permite explorar los lazos que se tejieron entre ella y muchas escritoras de su época. -

Semester Program in Buenos Aires, Argentina Course Name: Gender History in Latin America Hours of Instruction per Week: 4 Total weeks: 15 Total Hours of Instruction: 60 Courses transferable to ECTS Courses transferable to U.S. System Recommendation: Advanced written and spoken English Course Description: The course provides a brief introduction to the history of gender in Latin America from the time of Columbus to the 20th century. Focusing on the multiple manners in which womanhood has been constructed and experienced, the course explores the role that categories such as racial origins and social class play in mediating and defining experience. The course seeks to understand the complexity of the process of finding women’s own voices. Labor, family relations, sexuality, religion, education, and the evolution of political and civil rights will be discussed in order to demonstrate that women have actively shaped their own destinies. The course will use case studies, such as Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Manuela Saenz, Clorinda Matto de Turner, Eva Perón, Rigoberta Menchú, and Frida Kahlo and the weekly readings will be completed with primary source material, such as memoirs, accounts, films, photographs, and images. Attendance policy: Each class will consist of two sections. During the first, the instructor will provide a brief historical background of the weekly topics. During the second, students will engage in active participation by discussing and evaluating the weekly readings. In addition, each week a small group of students will prepare a short oral presentation and a brief written summary on one of the recommended readings. The requirements also include a midterm and final exam, as well as class attendance. -

During the first, the instructor will provide a brief historical background of the weekly topics. During the second, students will engage in active participation by discussing and evaluating the weekly readings. In addition, each week a small group of students will prepare a short oral presentation and a brief written summary on one of the recommended readings. The requirements also include a midterm and final exam, as well as class attendance. Course Requirements Class attendance is required of all students at UB. A 75% attendance to classes is mandatory to keep the regular student status. An electronic system keeps track of attendance. Students have to slide an electronic card every class to comply with the attendance policy. Class participation is very important; there will be several class discussions, which will rely heavily on student participation. Students are expected to conduct research for the final paper and consult the digital library (EBSCO) for that purpose. UB holds to the view that plagiarism constitutes intellectual theft and is a serious breach of acceptable conduct. Any student caught plagiarizing will immediately be given a “no credit” for all courses taken in the semester. There will be no make ups for classes falling on public holidays. Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera, Clorinda Matto de Turner, and Teresa González de Fanning, among other notable female authors, found their literary voices through these gatherings. This thesis analyzes four key ideas emerging on the topic of education from the essays read at these workshops and published in Veladas literarias de Lima (1892) and those written by the same authors after their conclusion. The four central themes analyzed relate to women’s education and its link to nation building, women’s education as connected to religion and morality, the quality of women’s education, and a belief in women’s intelligence. -

Tille-Victorica: Flora Tristan's Plural Identities The influence that Flora Tristan’s writing and militancy for women’s and worker’s rights had in France, and especially in Peru in the twentieth century is undeniable. In the early 1940s, Peruvian poet and political activist Magda Portal wrote a biography of Tristan (1803-1844) in which she acknowledges the Franco-Peruvian author as the “precursor of socialist feminism” (Pratt 156). This honor prompted Emilia Romero to publish, in 1946, the first Spanish translation of Tristan’s famous travel book Pérégrinations d’une paria, first published in France in 1837 (Staedler 229). -

César Salas Guerrero COLABORADORES Y CORRESPONSALES DEL SEMANARIO LITERARIO EL ÁLBUM (1874-1875)1 César Salas Guerrero Universidad de San Martín de Porres Dentro de la historia del periodismo literario peruano, El Álbum (1874-1875) ocupa un lugar destacado por ser la primera revista cuya dirección estuvo a cargo exclusivamente de mujeres, por el manifiesto adelanto que constituyó respecto a anteriores semanarios literarios femeninos en número y calidad de contribucio- nes, y por haber estado su proyecto ligado a quienes, aunque forasteras, eran las escritoras más representativas de la ciudad de Lima por aquella época: la argen- tina Juana Manuela Gorriti y la tacneña Carolina Freyre de Jaimes2. Sobre Juana Manuela Gorriti y su larga estancia en nuestras tierras ya nos hemos ocupado en un anterior artículo3, por lo que contaremos brevemente que había nacido en la provincia de Salta el 15 de julio de 18164, que en 1830 tuvo que exi- liarse con su familia en Bolivia, huyendo del dictador Juan Manuel de Rosas, y que en Tarija conoció al militar Manuel Isidoro Belzu, con quien se casó, y quien luego fue presidente del país altiplánico entre 1848 y 1850. Pero antes de que su esposo alcanzara la presidencia, Gorriti ya se había separado de él y se había establecido en nuestra patria, primero en Arequipa y alrededor de 1850 en Lima, ciudad donde publicó sus primeras novelas, “La quena” y “El guante negro”, como folletines del diario El Comercio (1851-1852), y donde no tardó en darse a conocer entre los círculos literarios, especialmente entre el grupo de los bohe- mios que lideraba su entrañable amigo Ricardo Palma5.
