This present dissertation is concerned with sport, a human activity initially seen as a leisure practice which has been slowly changed through mankind’s history, and it is these days recognized as work performed by professionals who devote their physical and mental effort toward sporting goals or tasks of training, directing and assisting. The practice of physical effort has been part of mankind’s history since the early days, and it has developed according to our cultural evolution. The modern sport emerged around mid 19lh century following the industrial development, and it managed to become established as international bodies were created to supervise sporting activities. In Brazil the evolution of sport was slow and foreign influence contributed to its growth. Football, graced by its popular appeal, draws grasping European interest in the 30 ’s awakening the attention of the Brazilian government, which created the normative bases of the national game in 1941. The formation of the Tribunal de Penas (Penal Tribunal), which is concerned with the assessment of disciplinary infractions occurring over football disputes, was responsible for the creation of the Justiça Desportiva (Justice of Sport) in 1945 whose authority w as extended to other types of sport. The great sporting conquests did not stay only in the field of football. They were followed by volleyball and various types of athleticism, awakening even more the Brazilian people’s passion for sport. The 1988 Federal Constitution recognized the existence of the J u stiç a Desportiva, and it determined its field of activity in article 217. The laws no. 8.672 of July 6th 1993 and no. 9.615 of March 24th 1998, known respectively as the Z ico and P e lé laws, aimed to adapt the Brazilian sporting life to the new constitutional dispositions. Brazilian sport like sport in all parts of the world suffers the effects of globalization under the influence of the international bodies responsible for different types of sport. The governments and politicians of each country have sought and still seek to enjoy dividends from the exploitation of sporting activities. Although the professionalization and the highly lucrative nature of sporting practices are changing the meaning and the essence of sport, it continues to present itself as a social component of cultural manifestation. All this resulting complex of rigidly coordinated physical exercises, moving millions and millions of monetary units all around the world, generated a collection of rules enabling the realization and consolidation of the branch of judicial science known by the name of Direito Desportivo (Sporting Law). This Direito Desportivo constitutes a list of rules that identify physically and legally the different sporting practices, elevating sport to a magnitude of great realizations through mankind’s intellectuality. • AMERICA HALL of FAME NOMINATIONS by Roger
CAPITAL ONE/CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS By Roger Horne, Director of Athletic Communications, Pepperdine University In the fall of 2012, I nominated Terry Schroeder for the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame. He ended up being inducted during his first year on the ballot. In an effort to help show other schools how easy it is to nominate their all-time greats, I was asKed to put together a little “how-to” sheet. Here’s what I did. 1) As a reminder, Academic All-America Hall of Fame inductees are people that earned Academic All-America status during their college careers (or meet honorary induction standards), graduated with at least a 3.00 GPA, graduated at least 10 years ago, and have “achieved lifetime success in their professional careers and are committed to philanthropic causes in the communities where they reside.” 2) ThanKfully, CoSIDA has a page that lists all of a school’s Academic All-Americans: http://cosida.com/media/documents/2012/4/alltime_aaa_individual_byschool_Feb_2012.pdf If you don’t already have a comprehensive list, it’s a great place to start to narrow down prospective candidates. 3) Pepperdine hasn’t had a whole lot of lucK accumulating Academic All-Americans over the years. This past spring we only got our 10th entry on the list. Unfortunately, none of them have yet accomplished enough post-college that I felt there would be much sense in nominating them. There are probably a lot of schools out there in a similar situation. 4) Still, I felt it was important to try to get someone from Pepperdine into the Hall of Fame.
