Over the last 43 years, the Seminole program has done its part to help grow the game exponentially in that time span by churning out numerous All- America players, staffing quality coaches and stringing together many impressive seasons, including 10 trips to the Women’s College World Series as well as the 2018 NCAA National Championship and the 1981 & 1982 AIAW National Championships. With the 2021 season marking head coach Lonni Alameda’s 13th as the Seminole skipper, the direction of the program remains on the right path. Forty-win seasons continue to be a staple of the program, with 36 in the program’s 43 years, including 19 50-win seasons. NCAA Championship appearances are always expected, with the Seminoles being one of just nine schools to make an NCAA Regional in every year since 2000. Historically, there are not many programs that can match the numbers put up by Florida State: 17 Atlantic Coast Conference titles, 10 NCAA Women’s College World Series appearances, one NCAA national championship, two AIAW national titles, 34 All-Americans with 51 total All-America honors and 32 NCAA Championship appearances. Being a Florida State softball student-athlete does not mean the sole focus is just on the field. Joining the program puts you in an instantaneous family that is fostered by a fun-loving coaching staff that brings out the best in each player through team-building activities. In addition to the years of tradition etched in the Florida State softball program, the concept of team never holds a greater meaning than for those dressed in Garnet and Gold. Led by Alameda’s fun yet focused approach, Florida State softball student-athletes leave their careers with life-long memories. 2021 SOFTBALL | PAGE 2 10 WCWS APPEARANCES • 17 ACC CHAMPIONSHIPS • 32 NCAA APPEARANCES THIS IS FLORIDA STATE SOFTBALL COMMUNITY AND ACADEMIC PRIORITIES Community and Academic Success • Seminole Softball completed over 1,000 hours of community service in the last academic year; a testament to the hard work and commitment of the FSU softball coaches and players. • The Seminoles recorded a 100 percent participation rate in a variety of activities, including Literacy Week, National Student-Athlete Day, Miracle League Softball, as well as meeting with cancer patients at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare. • The Noles also “adopted” Madison Marshall in 2016 through a partner- ship with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. The 16-year old from Clarks- ville, Fla., found out she had brain cancer in 2015. • Florida State Softball also adopted Hayden Stone in 2019 through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, after hearing about her recent diagnosis with a soft-tissue cancer. • FSU earned the Athletic Director’s Cup For Service award in 2014, 2015 and 2018, given to the program with the highest amount of community service hours per student-athlete. • A team leadership group, known as The Tribe, meets weekly to help promote group activity among the team. The leadership council helps coordinate activities such as Dugout Club Socials, seasonal newsletters, community service activities and more. • The program carries several All-ACC Academic Honor Roll students, All-ACC Academic team members, postgraduate scholarship winners, CoSIDA/ESPN All-District and All-American performers. • The Seminoles placed five student-athletes on the 2019 All-ACC Aca- demic Softball Team - Cassidy Davis, Carsyn Gordon, Dani Morgan, Anna Shelnutt and Kathryn Sandercock. • Florida State has been recognized three times in the last eight years with the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award for success both on and off the field - Kelly Hensley (2013), Alex Powers (2017) and Kylee Hanson (2018). • Tessa Daniels earned the NCAA’s Elite 90 Award in 2018 for holding the highest GPA of any student-athlete at the Women’s College World Series. 2021 SOFTBALL | PAGE 2 PAGE 3 | 2021 SOFTBALL 1981, 1982 AIAW NATIONAL CHAMPIONS • 2018 NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS • 51 ALL-AMERICANS THIS IS FLORIDA STATE SOFTBALL FACILITIES SECOND TO NONE The Seminole Softball Complex • Known as one of NCAA softball’s best venues, JoAnne Graf Field at the Seminole Softball Complex is a modernized athletic facility that caters quite well to student-athletes, coaches and fans. • Factors Influencing the University Choice of Ncaa Division I Softball Players
THE SMART JOURNAL Page 35 FACTORS INFLUENCING THE UNIVERSITY CHOICE OF NCAA DIVISION I SOFTBALL PLAYERS Kary Kankey, Norfolk State University Jerome Quarterman, Florida State University Abstract This investigation was designed to examine the choice factors softball players considered most impor- tant when selecting a college or university of NCAA Division I member institutions. A questionnaire was used to collect data from a sample of 196 students (freshmen through seniors) of 10 NCAA Divi- sion I member institutions in the state of Ohio. Descriptive statistics were followed in the analyses of the data. Factors that were most influential for softball players’ choice of a college or university were availability of a major or academic program, head coach, career opportunities after graduation, social atmosphere of the team, and the amount of financial aid. The least influential choice factors were friends, affiliation of the university (religion, public, private), media coverage, softball team Web site, softball team sponsorships, high school coach, and ethnic or gender ratio of the university. Rec- ommendations for college softball coaches and all staff members involved in recruiting softball play- ers of NCAA Division I are discussed in the article as well as recommendations for further research. INTRODUCTION The majority of colleges in the United States sponsor intercollegiate athletics for their students. Since 1910, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has governed intercollegiate athletics.
