Greetings Compatriots of the SAR!

It has been an honor and a privilege to have served as your State President these past few months. During this time, we have continued to expand our outreach into our communities and to pursue the goals of our national organization. I am espe- cially proud of the many activities of our Color Guards and our local Chapters. We are very active, and our activities can be measured by looking at the state website calendar. We are all volunteers! I would like to thank each of you for your service and your patriotism. One of the ways we contribute the greatest is in the remembrance of our Patriot ancestors. In addition to identi- fying and documenting our ancestors as Patriots of the Revolution, we also find, mark, and commemorate their gravesites. This is a very solemn event and has great meaning that has been passed down in military history. It is worth repeating some words that were said several years ago by Past President Wayne Eells Jr:“ It is said that each person dies three times. Once when their heart stops beating, again when they are buried, and for the final time when their name is said and remembered for the last time. With our own lives, we continue to honor their lives and sacrifices.” One of our Chapters is deserving of special recognition. TheClifty Creek Chapter was selected by the National Society as the recipient of the USS Stark Memorial Award for exceptional support of veterans. This means that the Clifty Creek Chapter was thebest chapter in the nation for Veterans’ support. Our Anthony Halberstadt Chapter was selected by National as the 12th best chapter in the nation for their chapter website. Their website may be viewed as this location: http://halberstadt.indianasar.org/ (Continued on next page)

I want to remember the goals for the Indiana State Society that were established by Past President William Sharp II in 2014. We have been steadily progressing these past 7 years in their achievement. Here they are, with an assessment of their status: Grow new leaders: Our State has asked many compatriots to join our leadership team and serve as both Officers and Committee chairs. We have a significant number of new members that have joined in the roles, and they are bring us great ideas.

Grow the fellowship amongst the Compatriots: We have restarted the in-person meetings since the pan- demic affected us in early 2020. Our House of Delegates is devoting time to in-person fellowship and our leaders are on the road visiting Chapters.

Grow in our knowledge of the Revolutionary War: Our State participates in several Revolutionary War battle sites including commemorations for (IN), COL de la Balme (IN), Fort Laurens (OH), Blue Licks (KY), and Point Pleasant (WV)

Grow participation in Youth programs: We have participated in each of the youth programs at the State and Chapter levels (JROTC, Brochure, Poster, Essay, Orations) and many of the participants competed at the National level. This year, we will be supporting the Indiana Boy’s State again.

Attract New Members and Retain Current Members: Our membership is now at 790 compatriots and is an increase of 15% from last year. We can be proud of this achievement, and we should work to diligently retain our existing members.

Our summer House of Delegates (July meeting), hosted by the William Henry Harrison Chapter, was hugely suc- cessful. We had twice the number of delegates than normal and most seats were filled. We spent a very busy day focused on the agenda of the State’s business. One of the more important activities was to realign the Chap- ter of our State into five (5) new Districts. We elected new District Vice Presidents and the State Color Guard Commander (Jacob Vink) appointed Area Color Guard Commanders for each District. This information, and other aspects of the State SAR Society, may be found in our new State SAR Community forum. I invite you to access this link and register as a member to participate: http://members.indianasar.org/

We have several important events that are occurring soon. Please make plans to attend our Fall House of Dele- gates on 09 October in Vincennes. The George Rogers Clark Chapter will host this meeting. I would love to con- tinue to be challenged to find everyone a seat, because so many of our Compatriots attended. We will also con- duct a State Executive meeting (by Zoom) on 25 August and will schedule a follow-up meeting in September. Many members of our State will attend the Blue Licks and Point Pleasant Commemorations.

I would like to close with again thanking our membership for your service and your support of the SAR. I look forward to our continued fellowship and successes! Jeff

Duneland Chapter June 5th Zoom Meeting: Guest speaker- Mr. James A. Mohammed:

Our Guest Speaker was Mr. James A. Mohammed, the President and CEO of Lake Shore Public Media. Mr. Mohammad shared several examples of the products produced by our local PBS station. He shared a video from the Series, “Eyes on the Arts” which highlighted the Reddel Memorial Organ in the Valparaiso University Chapel. This organ is unique in the world and has 4 separate keyboards with a 5 th pedal board. It was designed around the chapel, which is the 2 nd largest college chapel in the world. Mr. Mohammed said that 70-75% of their donors are from outside the NW Indiana area. They are always trying to show our community in the best light possible and are looking for interesting stories from the area. He also showed a video they made on the Old Joliet Prison in which they earned the “Golden Tele” award. This talked of the history of the old prison, which sat on 16 acres and had anywhere from 1000 to 2000 prisoner inmates consistently during its 150 year history. Mr. Mo- hammed also showed a clip from a series called “In-Studio” which is live performances of local Artists; in this case a Mr. Toranzo Cannon. You can watch on Video.LakeshorePBS.org. On this website you can also catch classic movies and docu- mentaries including “Shifting Sands”. Mr. Mohammed said they try to tell stories that are positive and reflect NW Indiana in a positive manner allowing the outside communities to get to know us better. Compatriot Brechner also stated that PBS is also on 89.1 FM on your radio.

Below: French Ambassador to the US Philippe Etienne spoke at the memorial on May 20th. Compatriots George Frantz and Rob Pfaff represented the SAR and spoke with the ambassador. See his speech below.

Dear Friends, Chers amis, What a welcome! I’m just starting to understand the true meaning of Indiana’s legendary hospitality, and even starting to develop some Hoosier pride! You make me feel at home. And it feels good! Actually, it is no coincidence that a Frenchman would feel at home in Lafa- yette and West Lafayette. We owe so much to the Marquis de Lafayette and . The fact that France and America are each others’ oldest allies, with an alliance, a sense of solidarity and a friendship that go back more than 240 years, has its roots in their shared affection and esteem. Lafayette, Indiana is special, with its three centuries of shared French- American history and heritage. Fort , founded in 1717, was the first fortified French settlement in what is now Indiana. The story of the French presence in the Midwest, of the interactions between the French settlers and Indigenous communities, and the way they transformed the area’s landscape, economy, and the politics, needs to be better known, further researched and documented. It is not for me to write history. It is not for me to change the course of history. You are American, you don’t speak French anymore, and we are fine with that! Rest assured that I am not here to reclaim the land... I am simply here to celebrate our special friendship. And I am here to thank you. Thank you for honoring our special connection. Thank you for keeping alive traditions inherited from 17th and 18th century France. That is a really moving thing for any French person here in America to witness. I know that every fall for the past 50-plus years, Fort Ouiatenon has hosted a giant festival, the Feast of the Hunters Moon. The consul arrived here in 2017, just as you were celebrating 300 years of French history and he told me that it was an unforgettable experience. The Feast commemorates the region’s heritage, featuring thousands of reenactors and drawing more than 60 thou- sand visitors every year. That is a big deal. I want to thank you all, and to thank your families and your community, for your dedication and hard work. We are just a small piece of your history, but we appreciate the fact that every year, visitors can be reminded of the contributions that diverse cultures – including ours –bring to America's melting pot. I visited Detroit last July and met with local residents of that city who would like to showcase its French roots. In Missouri, not too far from here, a National Park was recently established in the town of Sainte-Genevieve to commemorate America’s French heritage and to educate people about it. Here, the Ouiatenon Preserve was created and given National Historic Landmark status by the Federal Govern- ment, with the support of the French Consulate in Chicago. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate those who spearheaded this effort, as it not only reconnects your community with our common history, but it also highlights the connections between history, ecology and biodiversity. This is an important project for us and for future generations. These examples show that there is clearly momentum for such initiatives. Communities in the Mid- west do not want to see their French past vanish. They want to preserve, protect, and draw attention to their French heritage. They see it as an asset, for both local development and tourism. I can only encourage you in that regard and assure you of our full support. We should not forget that what we call the Midwest today was once known as “Upper ”, la Louisiane d’En Haut or le Pays d’En Haut.

I understand that a meeting took place recently in Prairie du Rocher, Illinois, where local communities decided to work together to promote the “French Creole Corridor” in the Midwest. We are very happy to support this initiative. I know that Ouiatenon is part of that process and expect other communi- ties from Indiana to join in. I see these developments as a wonderful opportunity to forge people-topeople connections, cultural and educational ex- changes, partnerships in science and higher education, and expanded prospects for business (France is already one of Indiana’s major partners in this area). I also see the work that you do to become more familiar with your French history as a symbol of our special relationship. By taking part in archeol- ogy, research, and education programs, you will learn more about your history, but you will also teach us French more about our own history. All too often, we recall the French roots of and Louisiana but forget the Midwest, the French Creole Corridor. You will help us change that, to our mu- tual benefit.

Alors, merci.

Merci beaucoup pour votre accueil inoubliable. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

News You Can Use! Youth Protection Training ______I was recently once again appointed as State Educational Outreach Coordinator for Indiana. The NSSAR has instituted a national edu- cational initiative program. It was started up in 2017 but then postponed by many chapters in 2020 and early 2021 due to the COVID 19 pandemic. The objective is for any compatriot who in the execution of his regular SAR duties will have contact with young people to take the YPT training. Color Guardsmen who regularly do school presentations or youth would be the individuals who should be trained. It would be best to ensure your vaccinations are up to date when getting out into the public once again. School systems may indeed require verification of your vaccinations so carrying your vaccination card could be beneficial. There are some excellent DAR activities that the SAR can segway into as youth outreach continues. I have training materials for the program. Indiana Society President Jeffrey Jones has committed to continue President’s Waldroup’s efforts to- ward change, innovation, and collaboration within the Indiana Society. Our organization’s success is dependent upon sharing our message with each other and the public. Toward these ends, we offer some guidance for chapters and compatriots to take full advantage of technology and social media.

It’s important for the world to see what we’re doing. Some of the chapters have their own websites. Understandably, most do not take full advantage of their sites to present the organization to the public. Many have taken to Facebook to post photos, discuss activities, and share history. Those who are ac- tive on Facebook, I would encourage to continue the practice and be active participants on the Indiana Society’s Facebook page.

In addition to Facebook, we’re offering an alternate venue for communicating with each other and the public. We’ve established an Indiana SAR Community bulletin board and discussion forum. This “community” will be for members (including auxiliary) to post events, discuss issues, ask questions, and let the public know what we’re doing. The site is search engine friendly and will be open to the public for reading. President Jones has already posted his first message to the organization. I’m con- fident we’ll see many more. Please read the messages and comment as appropriate.

In July, 2016, Congress established the United States Semiquincentennial Commission to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. The America 250 Foundation has partnered with the Commission to help plan public and private collaboration to commemorate the 2026 event. The Sons of the American Revolution is an integral part of these preparations and associated activities. The Indiana SAR Community will be our primary America 250 communications venue.

There is a consolidated events calendar on the IndianaSAR.org site. To maximize participation and help eliminate scheduling conflicts, it’s important that all chapters take advantage of this resource. With only certain people able to post events, some fall through the cracks. I’m confident some do not know who to contact for event postings. In the near future, each chapter will be provided log in creden- tials enabling them to post their own events.

In another effort toward improving internal communications, we’ve collaborated with Google to estab- lish more robust and compliant email capabilities. This will hopefully allow leadership to better share information with membership.

Please make an effort to take advantage of these resources. Also, please feel free to offer sugges- tions on how we can better present our message to the world.

27 Indiana Society Color Guard The Indiana Society Color Guard is probably best known for the color and pageantry their uniforms and flags bring to a parade, grave dedication or other community event. Emotions can range anywhere from children's questions and smiles to tears from a veteran's pride and memories. While all of this is true and important, one cannot overlook the wonderful side effect of fellow- ship with others who share common interests and passions.

New members are encouraged for local and statewide participation. There are loaner uniforms available and participation and travel is limited only by your own time and energy. Please consider serving in the Color Guard and experiencing the fellowship of your com-
