CURRENT MAJOR NPS DUTIES:

Monitor the condition of 71 archeological National Historic Landmarks in the 13 Midwest Region states and provide technical assistance on preservation, protection, and interpretation of those properties to their stewards; identify, study, and nominate nationally significant archeological properties for NHL designation in collaboration with property owners, State/Tribal Historic Preservation Offices, scholars, and other preservation partners.

Editorial supervision for all MWAC technical reports (ca. 20-30/year). Occasional short-term field and laboratory assignments in areas of expertise. Acting Center Manager rotation (1996-present).

PRIOR MAJOR NPS DUTIES:

While GS-11 Archeologist and GS-12 Supervisory Archeologist (April 1987-October 1996; 40 hrs/wk), I held primary responsibility for investigation of Historic period sites in the 13-state NPS Midwest Region, including fur trading posts, presidential homes, other 19th-century structures undergoing restoration, several lighthouses on Lake Superior, the Ohio and Erie Canal, Civil War battlefields, and similar sites. Conducted archeological inventory and evaluation field projects throughout the region at such parks as Lincoln Home NHS, James A Garfield NHS, Ulysses S Grant, NHS William Howard Taft NHS, Harry S Truman NHS, Cuyahoga Valley NP, Pipestone NMon, Grand Portage NMon, Pictured Rocks NL, Dunes NL, St Croix NSR, Arkansas Post NMem, Wilson’s Creek NB, Pea Ridge NB, Scotts Bluff NMon, Agate Fossil Beds NMon, NHP, Hopewell Culture NHP, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial (Gateway Arch), Isle Royale NP, Apostle Islands NL, and Keewenaw NHP. Responsible for supervision of all associated laboratory work and report preparation, completing approximately 20 technical reports on investigations and numerous other letter reports for shorter projects. Employed knowledge of cultural resource laws, such as the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and Archeological Resource Protection Act (ARPA) in performing duties. Served as NHPA Section 106 advisor to 10 MWR parks.

As Program Manager (GS-13, Supervisory Archeologist) for Archeological Information and Operations (October 1996-September 2000; 40 hrs/wk), supervised and evaluated all administrative personnel, report production staff, and GIS/IT staff (15-20 FTE); responsible for selection of new employees to fill vacancies in

the program. Position was eliminated in 2000, and I was reassigned to NHL Program. Served as the Collateral- Duty Safety Officer for 17 years (1997-2014).

More than 35 years’ experience directing large-scale archeological surveys and field excavations in the upper Great Lakes, central Great Plains, and Mississippi River valley. As Director, Midwestern Archeological Research Center, Illinois State University (1984-1986), supervised and coordinated all research and support staff (30-40 FTE); served as Principal Investigator and fiscal agent for more than 30 successfully completed research grant acquisitions with awards totaling over $1,000,000.
