General Charles Scott and His March To Ouiatenon By J. W. WHICKCAR,Attica, Ind. The state of Virginia financed George Rogers Clark and his little volunteer army was a part of the state militia of Virginia, on which account the state of Virginia claimed and actually took possession of all of the northwest territory. This territory was first governed by the laws of Virginia and her institutions were established here. When Virginia beheld from the sunset side of her western mountains the north- western territory and sent her militia to do battle for its pos- session, she claimed it beyond the rivers that skirted her western boundaries to the Father of Waters, from the north- west corner of the Lake of the Woods to the mouth of the Ohio. Out of this territory has been carved six of the great north central states, and these six states now stand as endur- ing and lofty monuments to the magnanimity and princely liberality and devotion of Virginia to the general government. “Since God gaLc the fruitful land of Canaan to Moses and Israel, such a gift of present and future empire has never been made to any people”, as this territory which made these sovereign states, drained by the Mississippi river and its east- ern tributaries, an empire of present and future wealth, capable of supplying all the needs of the restless, ceaseless current of humanity in these great and growing states. It was Virginia’s title to the northwestern territory that England acknowledged in the treaty of 1783. Previous to this, in the various treaties of the white people, at the conclusion of other wars in which the native Red man took no part and had no interest, this territory was bartered and traded as a pawn, to be used in driving a good bargain at the conclusion of war, the title passing as part of the terms of the various treaties. -

Adrian Ball State University Muncie, Indiana April 1998 Expected Date of Graduation: May 1998 Purpose of Creative Project The purpose of my creative project evolves from my work as an intern at The Miami County Museum in Peru, Indiana. I was selected to write, edit, and produce five videos to be played alongside their coordinating permanent displays. The video scripts were limited to local subjects: the circus, the 1913 flood, the railroad, the Miami Indians (specifically Little Turtle and Frances Slocum), and Cole Porter. Each one gives a short history and their importance to the community. These videos will be used to educate Peru and its visitors about Miami County's rich historical heritage. - -. The Story of My Encounters with the Historical Giants of Miami County, Indiana In the summer of 1997, I accepted an internship at the Miami County Museum in Peru, IN. My assignment was to create, write, edit, and produce scripts for a series of five historical videos. I would be doing all the research and writing, plus choosing all the footage, photos and background music, while a professional person would be hired to do the actual filming. The museum has approximately a hundred visitors a week, and it was hoped that the new videos would help to increase this number. These videos were also important for the museum to update their displays and would considerably help the Miami County Museum compete with the technology of museums around the state. -

The Society of Indiana Pioneers "To Honor the Memory and the Work of the Pioneers of Indiana" Pioneer Founders of Indiana 2014 The Society of Indiana Pioneers is seeking to identify Indiana Pioneers to recognize and honor their efforts in building early Indiana foundations. Each year, 15-20 counties are to be selected for honoring pioneers at each annual meeting. The task of covering all 92 counties will be completed by 2016, the year we celebrate the centennial of the founding of the Society of Indiana Pioneers. We carry out this mission of the Society in three distinct ways: 1.) we maintain a rich Pioneer Ancestor Database of proven ancestors of members across one hundred years; 2.) Spring and Fall Hoosier Heritage Pilgrimages to significant historic and cultural sites across Indiana; and 3.) educational initiatives, led by graduate fellowships in pioneer Indiana history at the master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation levels. To commemorate the Society’s centennial and the state’s bicentennial in 2016, the Society is doing something new and dipping its toes in the world of publishing. -
