The generally flat-lying strata reveal evidence of rock stress reiased by faults at Little Current and by pop-ups elsewhere. Kethtippecanunk, A mixed 18th- and early l9th-century town on the banks of the Tippecanoe river- recent research by Jones, James R., III Jones, James R., III (Department of Anthropology, Indiana University- Indianapolis ) KETHTIPPECANUNK, A MIXED 18TH- AND EARLY l9TH-CENTURY TOWN ON THE BANKS OF THE TIPPECANOE RTVER- RECENT RESEARCH Early aboriginal, and later, mixed Euroamerican-Indian occupations near the mouth of the Tippecanoe River are reported in documents during the latter two-thirds of the 18th century, and continue until the early 1800s. Inhabitants or users of the area included Native Americans such as the Wea, other Miami groups, the Potawatomi, and Euroamericans such as French traders. By the late 1700s, the mixed French-Indian town of Kethtippecanunk (site 12 T S9) was flourishing there, and consisted of a large number of substantial structures and a predominantly Euroamerican settlement style, until destroyed by militia in 1791. Analysis of past surface artifact collections from the site (1984- present), and controlled archaeological and magnetometer reconnaissance by IU-Indianapolis in 1987, reveal an occupation quite different from the downstream sites of the Wea Village (12 T 6), Fort Ouiatenon (12 T 9), and the "Kickapoo Mascouten" area north of the fort. Given its cultural "mix" and utilitarian emphasis upon trading, artifacts from Kethtippecanunk were expected to reflect a predominantly Euroamerican pattern, especially in terms of architectural, construction, hardware, and kitchen items. Comparison of 12 T 59 to the other 18th-century sites in the region should help reveal differential patterns of acculturation and historic development for the various early historic cultures in Tippecanoe County. -

Songs of the Century T. Austin Graham hat is the time, the season, the historical context of a popular song? When is it most present in the world, best able Wto reflect, participate in, or construct some larger social reality? This essay will consider a few possible answers, exploring the ways that a song can exist in something as brief as a passing moment and as broad as a century. It will also suggest that when we hear those songs whose times have been the longest, we might not be hearing “songs” at all. Most people are likely to have an intuitive sense for how a song can contract and swell in history, suited to a certain context but capable of finding any number of others. Consider, for example, the various uses to which Joan Didion is able to put music in her generation-defining essay “Slouching Towards Bethlehem,” a meditation on drifting youth and looming apocalypse in the days of the Haight-Ashbury counterculture. Songs create a powerful sense of time and place throughout the piece, with Didion nodding to the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quick- silver Messenger Service, and “No Milk Today” by Herman’s Hermits, “a song I heard every morning in the cold late spring of 1967 on KRFC, the Flower Power Station, San Francisco.”1 But the music that speaks most directly and reverberates most widely in the essay is “For What It’s Worth,” the Buffalo Springfield single whose chiming guitar fifths and famous chorus—“Stop, hey, what’s that sound / Everybody look what’s going down”—make it instantly recognizable nearly five decades later.2 To listen to “For What It’s Worth” on Didion’s pages is to hear a song that exists in many registers and seems able to suffuse everything, from a snatch of conversation, to a set of political convictions, to nothing less than “The ’60s” itself. -

Work began at Fort Wayne in 1832 and by 1835 was completed to Largo, Indiana. The original plan was to go as far as Lafayette and then terminate. In 1836 pressure from area businessmen, including Calvin Fletcher, led to the passing of the Mammoth Internal Improvements Act, this extended the Wabash and Erie Canal to Terre Haute. Construction reached Logansport in 1838, Lafayette in 1841, and Terre Haute in 1849. Segments also extended eastward towards Ohio, and the canal opened in Toledo in 1843. The final steps connected the Terre Haute section with the twenty-mile stretch of canal leading from Evansville (the Evansville section had been completed by 1839). This connection to Evansville was completed by 1853 by way of the abandoned Crosscut canal works and the old proposed Central Canal Route. -

Chief Jean Baptiste Richardville
CHIEF JEAN BAPTISTE RICHARDVILLE By Craig Leonard «««««««««««««««»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» Chief Jean Baptiste Richardville was the civil chief of the Miami Indians from 1816 until his death in 1841. He was born at the Miami village of Kekionga (Fort Wayne) about 1761 and was known by his Miami name, Peshewa ("the lynx," "the wildcat"), and later by the Anglicized version of his name, John B. Richardville. Richardville's father was Joseph Druet de Richardville, a French-Canadian trader of noble ancestry whose family members, the Drouets, were among the most prominent nobility, officers, and traders in New France. Tacumwah (Maria Louisa Richardville), Richardville's mother, was the sister of Pacanne, the chief of the village at Kekionga. Joseph apparently remained at Kekionga from about 1750 to 1770; he then returned to Three Rivers, Canada, where his son later joined him for a few years to receive a formal education. Drouet and Tacumwah are known to have had three other children, but little is known of them or where they spent their lives. Tacumwah, who had the status of a female chieftain among the Miami, later married another French trader, Charles Beaubien. Several factors destined Richardville for prominence. The Miami tribe had at least five major divisions, of which the foremost were the Atchatchakangouen, or Crane People. The head chief of this group was deferred to by the heads of the other divisions as the entire tribe's civil chief. The Atchatchakangouen head chief was Pacanne, the leader at Kekionga. Among the Miami, war chiefs were chosen for their prowess in battle, but succession to civil chieftain was hereditary. -
