The deadlines for the newsletters are usually the first of the month, and we try to get the newsletters into your mailboxes by the 15th. (For example, our target for the Sept/Oct. issue is September 15.) Usually the on- line version of the newsletter is available around the 10th, and an email is sent to let you know it is on the GLHEA website. ñ Because many of the activities in which we participate are offered to traditional schools, we must register for these events in the spring or summer as they do. If you‘re not getting updates, it means I may be having problems with getting your email address correct. Also, please check the GLHEA website weekly to stay abreast of what‘s available. ñ GLHEA sponsors three Titus 2/Moms‘ Night Out meetings per year. W e have T2MNO‘s in October, February & April. I don't know how many of our families noticed the new GiggleLearn Math games program in the GLHEA newsletter, but the creator is a teacher/tutor out of Indianapolis, and I am now an independent agent for her helping to spread the word about this great new program that helps kids ages 4-8 learn and memorize the basic addition and subtraction strategies and facts.

As a promotional offer, we are offering a $10 discount for anyone who wants to try this. It is a really stocked kit, and comes with a money-back guarantee. I bought one and found that even my 9 year-old third grader actually looks forward to this as it's a fun way to accomplish the necessary drill and practice so impor- tant in these early years. My 4 year-old was delighted to find even he has games on his level that we can play as a family. Feel free to pass the word to anyone you think might benefit from this. W e do offer classes for nursery through second grade, but a co-op member must have at least a third grader to join.

Home schooling varies greatly in each family; some families really just use the co-op to enrich their children's educational experience by having them enrolled in non-traditional, or what some would say, non-essential (not reading ,writing, arithmetic), classes like drama. Other families would like to utilize the strengths of others and have their children take academic classes that would also serve to strengthen their child's education. Either way, the co-op is serving the diverse home schooling community as fully as we can.

At W CHEC, we strive to have all our classes help you and your children have a fuller home schooling experience! The types of experiences and classes we offer at W CHEC will continue to be diverse, just like our home schooling community we serve.

W CHEC meets every-other Tuesday morning beginning in September and going through the end April. W e are blessed to meet at Kossuth Street Baptist Church, our partners in this endeavor. KSBC and their staff have opened their building to us and continue to be a great place for our children. W e are very thankful to have such a fine facility in Lafayette, with an even finer staff of pastors.

Registrations will be accepted by mail beginning May 15, 2009, for new members. Current members will have first priority to register, but new members applying to join the co-op will be on a first-come-first-serve basis, based on class availability and the number of open spaces for new families.

Class sizes are limited, but we will do our best to register new families as space allows. Deadline to register is July 1, 2009, BUT many classes fill up before the deadline. Give yourself the best chance of getting wanted classes by turning in your application early. All necessary information including registration forms are posted on the GLHEA website on the W CHEC page.

If you have any questions about the co-op AFTER reading the posted forms, please contact Michelle Mast at chelle_mast@ hotmail.com or 765-490-0038.

11 3:80k>B00?k>.3::7k VisionœRelated Challenges and the Impact on Learning Several families have expressed interest in attending an in-service entitled —VISION...the Missing Link to Learning“ offered by Dr. Mary VanHoy, a board certified vision therapist based in Carmel, IN, whose organization offers treatment for • learning-related vision problems including ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, tracking problems; • treatment for binocular vision conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eye), convergence insufficiency (near vision disorder), diplopia (double vision), lack of stereopsis (two-eyed depth perception), and strabismus (cross-eyed, wandering eye, eye turns, etc.); • and visual rehabilitation for patients with special needs such as developmental delays or traumatic brain injury (TBI), including autism, stroke, whiplash, CP, MS, among others.

This is a free session open to all Clinton County homeschool families and will be held at the: Frankfort 1st Church of the Nazarene Community Center, 2056 E W abash St, Frankfort, IN 46041, W ednesday, May 27 at 1 PM.

This will coincide with our regularly scheduled bimonthly homeschool gathering, so you may bring your children to play in the gym area while you attend the in-service. Those not interested in the in-service are still welcome to come for fellowship--we just ask that children and those not attending the session contain their activity in the gym area while the session is held in the area with the tables.

I also want to mention that our invitation of Dr. VanHoy to speak to our group is not necessarily an endorsement of her services, but rather an opportunity to find out what she offers and her philosophy of vision-related challenges and their impact on learning.

If you plan to attend the in-service, please reply to me by May 13 at marie@ longviewcomm.net so that Dr. VanHoy can bring sufficient materials for the session. (No need to reply if you just plan to visit in the gym for our regular gathering time). Thank you!

17 3:80k>B00?k>.3::7k PURDUE CONVOCATIONS SCHOOL SHOW S 2009-2010

Lynn Deno has graciously offered to coordinate convocations for us! (Thank you, Lynn!) Her contact information is lynndeno@ comcast.net and 765-583-0032. Please do her a HUGE favor and read the following instructions carefully. Deadline to request seats is May 25. (Public schools put in their reservations in May before they leave for the summer!) 1. Register online on the GLHEA website. Please go to the date of the show you are wanting to attend on the —Calendar“ page. W e will only accept online registrations. If you do not have access to the Internet, please go to the library or find a friend to do this for you. 2. All shows cost $5 per person. W e have to make our payment about 6 weeks prior to each show. Please be responsi- ble in paying. If you change your email address or are not on the GLHEA mailing list next year, please do not expect us to hunt you down with final details or to ask for payment. Instructions will be sent through the normal GLHEA information channels. 3. W e‘ve made a tentative guess as to when your money is due. If Lynn does not receive your money before she has to send in the payment, she will not reserve a seat for you, and she will give your seats away. All payments need to made out to Lynn Deno and sent to her at 2633 N 475 W , W est Lafayette, IN 47906. 4. You are welcome to pay for all of your shows when you pay for the first one for which you‘ve registered, or you can pay for one show at a time as long as it is received by Lynn by its payment deadline. 5. Even if you don‘t know for sure if you can attend every show in which you are interested, I would recommend ask- ing Lynn to reserve seats for you. It is easier to reduce the number of seats than to add seats. Please be realistic, too. W e have a good working relationship with Purdue Convocations. If our seat requests get too sloppy, we‘ll damage that relationship. 6. They allow young children to come (even those younger than for which the show has been recommended). How- ever, they rightfully expect disruptive children to be removed. Please pay for preschoolers even though they may sit on your lap. Nursing infants would not cost. However, remember that a nursing infant today will be a toddler by next spring! These educational programs are done as a service to our community, and we do not want to take ad- vantage of them. They are not making a profit and are just covering costs. 7. Please keep the above idea in mind when deciding how many family members you bring. This should be limited to homeschoolers and 1-2 parents. 8. Please note which shows have study guide links. 9. Consider keeping these instructions for future reference. Spring of 2010 is a long way away! 10. Remember! You need to arrive before your show at least 30 minutes in advance. You normally should park in the Grant Street Parking Garage. They do not issue tickets. You will tell the ushers that you are with GLHEA, and they will seat you.

There really wasn‘t any moon that night, nor was there a path to walk on, so Harold cre- ated the world he wanted to explore, using nothing more than a big purple crayon and his sky‘s-the-limit imagination. In this delightful production, Enchantment Theatre uses life-size puppets, masks, magic, and music as Harold jets to Mars, joins a circus and meets a king (and a dragon!) in an enchanted gar- den. Set during the French Revolution, As You Like It tells the story of power-hungry men exiling their brothers, characters in disguise, and finding love in unexpected places. Frederick exiles his brother, Duke Senior, to the forest of Arden, so that he can reign over a French Duchy promised to Duke Senior. Simul- taneously, Orlando, who has been forced from his own town by a bloodthirsty brother, finds himself in the forest. Disguised as men for safety, Rosalind and her best friend and cousin, Celia, run from Freder- ick's regime and seek shelter in the forest where they are fated to find the exiled Orlando and Duke Sen- ior. Shakespeare‘s comic brilliance is wrapped in gender-confused, unrequited love. Aquila infuses As You Like It with their unique blend of fun and entertaining theatricality. Curricular connections: literature (Shakespeare), performing arts (theatre), visual art (masks)

Maybe you know about the Dog Days of Summer sponsored by the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette and the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine. W e are pleased to an- nounce that the community public art display of fiberglass dogs is ready to be displayed in May. In the excitement that follows, we know you could generate some learning projects using the dogs as a theme.

IF you already plan to write a story or a poem, practice a math skill, or create some art we ask you to consider dogs as a theme. Please visit our web site www.lafayettedogdays.com for Indiana Standards based lessons and dog book bibliog- raphies for you to use. On June 26 there will be a county wide exhibit of works that have been done by local students using a dog theme. The Art Museum will host the Dogs Rule Exhibit until July 24 and students whose work is selected may attend an opening reception on June 26, a once in a life time experience for some students. It is our hope that every school will be represented and that you make it happen for your student (s).

If you plan to participate, please send the following information to kathy.trout@ verizon.net : parent name, parent email & phone number student name
