SRI LANKA 1.0 Introduction
Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean, located between latitude 5°55’ to 9°50’ north and longitude 79°42’ to 81° 52’ East. The island has a total area of 65,610 sq.km. with maximum length of 432 km along the North-South direction and maximum width of 224 km along the East-West direction.
The country has a population of approximately 20.33 million as at 2012 and the growth rate is 0.9%. The population density is 324 persons per sq.km. 72% of the population live in rural areas whilst the rest live in urban areas.
There are two routes of Asian Highways in Sri Lanka viz., AH43 and AH44 and the total length of both these routes is approximately 650 km.
A-43 :Continues from Dhanuskody in India and enters Sri Lanka through Talaimannar in the island of Mannar and passes through Medawachchiya, Anuradhapura, Dambulla, Kurunegala, Colombo , Galle and ends at Matara.
Hill country capital, Kandy is linked to SRR A-43.
A-44 : Trincomalee in Eastern Province is linked with Dambulla on AH3.
It is envisaged to bring the entire length of the Asian Highway network in the country to 4 lane standards. Priority is given first to rehabilitate some of the existing 2 lane sections which require improvements and to gradually improve the heavily trafficked sections in urban areas to 4 lane standards. However, improving the roads from 2 lane standards to 4 lane standards in the heavily populated areas will be a difficult task due to the problems to be encountered in acquiring the required lands and resettling affected parties.
Further, Sri Lanka is constructing new expressways at present. A 95.28 km long section of the Southern Expressway which will be an alternative route to the section of the Asian Highway (AH43) from Colombo to Galle has been already commissioned in November 2011. Construction of Outer Circular Highway, having a total length of 29.1, part of which will also be an alternative route to Asian Highway (AH43) is under construction. Feasibility studies are being carried out for the construction of expressways to from Colombo to Kandy and from Colombo towards the Northern part of the country which will also form alternative routes to the sections of the Asian Highway (AH43). On completion of these expressway projects new improved route for the Asian Highway (AH43) will be proposed.

5. Progress in the installation of Asian Highway route signs
Action will be taken to install Asian Highway route signs on completion of all ongoing rehabilitation projects.
6. Road safety situation on AH routes (number of accidents, fatalities and serious injuries, emergency responsive services along the route, on-going initiatives to improve road safety situation)
Details on accidents pertaining to different sections of Asian Highway network are available at the relevant police stations. Necessary action will be taken to collect the same from records maintained in different police stations and to form a central data base. Road marking, installation of traffic signs etc. have been completed.
7. Concluding remarks
Road inventory data pertaining to Asian Highways is being updated regularly. Expressways are now being constructed in Sri Lanka. A 95.28 km long section of the Southern Expressway from Kottawa to Galle has been already commissioned. On completion of all expressways which are parallel to the sections of the Asian Highway (AH 43) and the connectivity among them is established new route for the Asian Highway (AH 43) could be proposed. The road safety and the condition of the Asian Highway network will be improved remarkably with the completion of projects listed in paragraphs 3 and 4 of this report.
