Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean,
• Located between, ◦ latitude 5°55’ to 9°50’ north and ◦ longitude 79°42’ to 81° 52’ East.
• Total area - 65,610 sq.km. ◦ Maximum length of 440 km along the North-South direction ◦ Maximum width of 220 km along the East-West direction.
• Population of approximately 20.45 million as at 2009 ◦ The growth rate is 1.1%. SRI LANKA ◦ The population density is 326 persons per sq.km. ◦ 72% of the population live in rural areas

Climate, Industries, Places of Interest etc.
• Climate: Sri Lanka is a rugged land of rainforest, diverse wildlife and
endless beaches. Low lands – tropical, average 27°C Central Hills – cooler,
with temperatures dropping to 14°C.
• Industries : Processing of Rubber, Tea, Coconuts, and Other agricultural
commodities; Clothing, Cement, Petroleum refining, Textiles, Tobacco.
• Agriculture : Rice, sugarcane, grains, pulses, oilseed, roots, spices, tea,
rubber, coconuts; milk, eggs, hides, meat.
• It’s famed for its ancient Buddhist ruins, including the 5th- century citadel
Sigiriya, with its palace and frescoes, and the sacred city of Anuradhapura.
• Its flavorful cuisine reflects its history as a maritime hub and cultural
