Level of difficulty of the travelers:
A combination of three factors can make this journey considerably more difficult. First, the distances are longer than on other trips. Secondly, about 20% of the routes are on unpaved roads. And thirdly, there is the strong cross wind in the extreme south. This trip is actually only for experienced riders who have proven that they are not afraid of long gravel roads. In addition, all factors together make the trip physically demanding, so a good physical condition is required.
Offroad:
About 20% of the route we ride on unpaved roads. They are mostly well-travelled gravel roads, so it is not very difficult. But you have to be careful in the curves and in the central reservation. As the unpaved roads are flat and well-traveled, it is difficult to prepare. In a basic training for off-road you learn the basic techniques of off- road riding. You will learn how to ride through pits, mud and over steep hills. None of this happens in Patagonia. But it's good to take part in a training session beforehand to find out whether off-road riding suits you. It would be a pity if you notice on the way that you don't like long riding on unpaved roads. This can take all the fun out of the trip. On the other hand, the infinite distances offer other participants the possibility to ride too fast. It goes without saying that this is very dangerous. The tour guide will not allow it. The distances are very large on some days. Especially Argentina is a vast empty country where the accommodation possibilities are far apart.
Climate:
Actually we ride through two different climate zones. Along the Carretera Austral in Chile there is a rainy maritime climate. One rides pieces here through subtropical rain forest, the view of rain is very big here. On the other side of the Andes lie the vast, withered pampas fields. It almost never rains here. In the south, on Tierra del Fuego, it can get very cold. We are then finally only 600 km away from the South Pole. It is also a plateau and therefore extra cold in the evening. So prepare yourself for different weather conditions. A good motorcycle suit, preferably waterproof, is certainly recommended.
Clothing:
Obligatory are a helmet, a warm motorcycle jacket, good gloves, good, firm motorcycle trousers and firm, high (mountain) shoes or boots. Because of the large temperature differences it can be practical to wear a motorcycle jacket with removable lining. In colder areas you can wear thermal underwear for example. Make sure you wear good gloves (no summer gloves!). Furthermore, a good pair of sunglasses is useful and a helmet with a visor that protects against the dust. If your motorcycle clothing is not waterproof, you should also bring a rain suit.
