Resumen Se estudia la biología y la biodiversidad ficológica de la comunidad de Cystoseira baccata en el noroeste de la Península Ibérica, una especie exclusiva del Atlántico, ampliamente distribuida a lo largo de la costa pero poco conocida. Se aporta información de 30 localidades muestreadas desde marzo de 2015 hasta julio de 2018 en un intervalo de profundidad desde el intermareal inferior hasta el submareal (5 m). Se han obtenido datos biométricos de 2264 ejemplares de C. baccata y analizado los epífitos de 941 plantas. Se han catalogado 230 especies epilíticas y epífitas. Con toda la información se ha caracterizado la biología y el hábitat de C. baccata, así como la diversidad ficológica que alberga su comunidad. También se analizaron los cambios producidos en la comunidad en diferentes períodos, tanto a corto como largo plazo. Además, se estudió la dinámica estacional de las características biológicas de C. baccata y de su flora asociada tanto de sustrato como epífita. Este trabajo proporciona información necesaria para el conocimiento y gestión de la comunidad de C. baccata en el noroeste ibérico. Resumo Estúdase a bioloxía e a biodiversidade ficolóxica da comunidade de Cystoseira baccata no noroeste da Península Ibérica, unha especie exclusiva do Atlántico, moi distribuída ao longo da costa pero pouco coñecida. Apórtase información de 30 lugares mostrados de marzo de 2015 a xullo de 2018 nun intervalo de profundidade desde o intermareal inferior ao submareal (5 m). Obtuviéronse os datos biométricos de 2264 exemplares de C. baccata e analizáronse os epífitos de 941 plantas. Catalogáronse 230 especies epilíticas e epífitas. Con toda a información caracterizouse a bioloxía e o hábitat de C. baccata, así como a diversidade ficolóxica que alberga a súa comunidade. Tamén se analizaron os cambios producidos na comunidade en diferentes períodos, tanto a curto como a longo prazo. Ademais, estudóuse a dinámica estacional das características biolóxicas de C. baccata e a súa flora asociada tanto do substrato como a epífita. Este traballo proporciona a información necesaria para o coñecemento e xestión da comunidade de C. baccata no noroeste ibérico. Summary The biology and phycology biodiversity of the community of Cystoseira baccata in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula is studied, an exclusive Atlantic species, widely distributed along the coast but little known. Information is provided from 30 locations sampled from March 2015 to July 2018 at a depth interval from the lower intertidal to the subtidal (5 m). We obtain the biometric data of 2264 specimens of C. baccata and the epiphytes of 941 plants have been analyzed. In total, 230 epilithic and epiphytic species have been cataloged. With all the information, the biology and habitat of C. baccata has been characterized, as well as the phycological diversity of the community. The changes produced in the community in different periods, both short and long term, were also analyzed. In addition, the seasonal dynamic of the biological characteristics of C. baccata and its associated flora, both substrate and epiphyte, was studied. This work provides information necessary for the knowledge and management of the community of C. baccata in the Iberian northwest. Rchid2 Received: 18 January 2020 / Accepted: 11 March 2020 / Published online: 16 March 2020 © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020 Abstract The inhibition properties of the isopropanol extract of brown seaweed Cystoseira baccata (CBE), against corrosion of carbon steel in HCl 1M medium, was evaluated using the weight-loss method and electrochemical measurements. It was shown that the extract exhibit excellent performance as inhibitors and the inhibition efciency increased with the concentration. The maximal value of inhibition efciency is 86.5% obtained by the Tafel method at 700 mg/l at 298 K. The polarization curves indicate that the CBE acts as a mixed-type inhibitor. The results obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy shows that the inhibitory action of this extract is based on the increase in the charge transfer resistance and the decrease in the double layer capacity. The temperature infuence studied in the temperature range 298–328 K by weight-loss method shows that the inhibition efciency decreases with increasing temperature for all concentrations of CBE. The adsorption and activation parameters allow us to suggest the physical adsorption of this inhibitor on the metal. The adsorption of the extract on the carbon steel follows Langmuir adsorption isotherm. PHAEOPHYTA-Brown algae (the group covered by this key) which are either olive-green in colour or any shade of brown between golden to very dark. RHO1)OPHYTA-Red algae which exhibit a wide range of colours from red or pink to a dark purplish-brown, almost black. They often bleach to a light brown or yellow in bright sunlight and may then lbeconle difficult to separate from brown algae. The base, shaded by the rest of tlhe plant, often remains dark and plants with light upper parts and dark bases are probably red algae. Microscopic individuals of blue-green alga~e(CYANIOPHYTA) are often present in large numbers and may appear as small black blobs or coloured slimes on seashores. The main parts of a brown seaweed are illustrated in Fig. 2. The shape (or absence) of the holdfast is important for the identification of some species. In others it is the shape and size of the receptacles (reproductive structures) and/or air bladders that must be noted. Air bladders are sometimes confused with receptacles, but bladders are generally smooth outside, hollow inside, and have no other visible structures.

Thus, the coastal areas of the planet are the most suitable for seaweed production, which can be an alternative to traditional agriculture and can thus contribute to a reduced carbon footprint. There are evolving studies that characterize seaweed’s nutritional value and policies that recognize them as food, and identify the potential benefits and negative factors that may be produced or accumulated by seaweed, which are, or can be, dangerous for human health. Seaweeds have a high nutritional value along with a low caloric input and with the presence of fibers, proteins, omega 3 and 6 unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals.
