10 Bo/l. Soco Hist. Nat.

  • The Brown Algae Cystoseira Baccata Extract As a Friendly Corrosion Inhibitor on Carbon Steel in Acidic Media
Research Article The brown algae Cystoseira Baccata extract as a friendly corrosion inhibitor on carbon steel in acidic media T. Benabbouha1 · R. Nmila2 · M. Siniti1 · K. Chefra3 · H. El Attari3 · H. Rchid2 Received: 18 January 2020 / Accepted: 11 March 2020 / Published online: 16 March 2020 © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020 Abstract The inhibition properties of the isopropanol extract of brown seaweed Cystoseira baccata (CBE), against corrosion of carbon steel in HCl 1M medium, was evaluated using the weight-loss method and electrochemical measurements. It was shown that the extract exhibit excellent performance as inhibitors and the inhibition efciency increased with the concentration. The maximal value of inhibition efciency is 86.5% obtained by the Tafel method at 700 mg/l at 298 K. The polarization curves indicate that the CBE acts as a mixed-type inhibitor. The results obtained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy shows that the inhibitory action of this extract is based on the increase in the charge transfer resistance and the decrease in the double layer capacity. The temperature infuence studied in the temperature range 298–328 K by weight-loss method shows that the inhibition efciency decreases with increasing temperature for all concentrations of CBE. The adsorption and activation parameters allow us to suggest the physical adsorption of this inhibitor on the metal. The adsorption of the extract on the carbon steel follows Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Keywords Corrosion inhibitor · Carbon steel · Acid media · Seaweed · Cystoseira baccata · Extract 1 Introduction Since 1930, plant and algae extract has been used as a corrosion inhibitor. Studies on natural products extract as Corrosion inhibitors are chemical compounds added at a corrosion inhibitor has become more extensive [10–17].

We gave ev- idences for the existence of a species distribution between pools along the shore, with the most Citation: Jégou, C.; Connan, S.; dense and smallest individuals in the highest pools. Pigment contents were higher in lower pools, Bihannic, I.; Cérantola, S.; Guérard, F.; suggesting a photo-adaptive process by which the decreasing light irradiance toward the low shore Stiger-Pouvreau, V. Phlorotannin and was compensated by a high production of pigments to ensure efficient photosynthesis. Conversely, Pigment Content of Native no xanthophyll cycle-related photoprotective mechanism was highlighted because high levels of Canopy-Forming Sargassaceae zeaxanthin rarely occurred in the upper shore.

  • A Field Key to the British Brown Seaweed!; (Phaeophyta) 7 Scotland and Ireland
Field Studtes 5 (1979) 1-44 A FIELD KEY TO THE BRITISH BROWN SEAMJEEDS (PHAEOPHYTA) By SUE HISCQCK Field Studies Council Oil Pollution Research Unit, Orielton Field Centre, Pembuoke, Dyfed INTRODUCTION The larger, or macroscopic marine ALGAE (seaweeds)are mainly found in three of the algal classes : CHLOROPHYTA-Green algae, usually rather delicate plants, grass-green in colour. PHAEOPHYTA-Brown algae (the group covered by this key) which are either olive-green in colour or any shade of brown between golden to very dark. RHO1)OPHYTA-Red algae which exhibit a wide range of colours from red or pink to a dark purplish-brown, almost black. They often bleach to a light brown or yellow in bright sunlight and may then lbeconle difficult to separate from brown algae. The base, shaded by the rest of tlhe plant, often remains dark and plants with light upper parts and dark bases are probably red algae. Gigartina Laurencia Laurencia Chondrus Porphyra stellata pinnatifida hybrida crispus umbilicalis FIG. 1 Some littoral species of red algae that are commonly confused with brown algae. Microscopic individuals of blue-green alga~e(CYANIOPHYTA) are often present in large numbers and may appear as small black blobs or coloured slimes on seashores. The main parts of a brown seaweed are illustrated in Fig. 2. The shape (or absence) of the holdfast is important for the identification of some species. In others it is the shape and size of the receptacles (reproductive structures) and/or air bladders that must be noted. Air bladders are sometimes confused with receptacles, but bladders are generally smooth outside, hollow inside, and have no other visible structures.
