Official Publication of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia VOL. 79 - No. 08 APRIL 22, 2018 ENGLISH VERSION Pope Francis Appoints Auxiliary Bishop Andriy Rabiy as Apostolic Administrator of the Ukrainian Archeparchy of Philadelphia; Accepts Resignation of Archbishop Stefan Soroka effective April 16, 2018 Statement by Metropolitan-Archbishop Stefan Soroka On Monday, April 16th, 2018, the Vatican Information Service announced that the Holy Father has accepted the resignation for medical reasons of Most Rev. Stefan Soroka, Archbishop of Philadelphia for Ukrainians and Metropolitan for the Ukrainian Catholic Church in USA. Pope Francis has declared the Archeparchy of Philadelphia as “sede vacante”. Most Rev. Andriy Rabiy has been appointed by Pope Francis as the Apostolic Administrator of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia until the appointment of the new Archeparch. Most Rev. Stefan Soroka was appointed as Metropolitan-Archbishop by His Holiness, Pope John Paul II on November 29th, 2000 and installed on February 27th, 2001. Most Rev. Stefan Soroka, Most Rev. Andriy Rabiy Archbishop-emeritus was appointed by Pope Francis as Auxiliary Bishop for the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia on August 8th, 2017. Bishop Andriy, a priest of our Archeparchy, was ordained to the episcopacy by His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk in St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in Lviv, Ukraine on September 3rd, 2017. We are also grateful to the Holy Father for the confidence he has shown in the abilities of Most Rev. Andriy Rabiy in appointing him as Apostolic Administrator for the interim. I take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the clergy, religious, seminarians and laity of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia. These past seventeen years have been filled with many challenges and blessings, some unique in the experience of the Philadelphia Archeparchy. Success in responding to the varying needs of the Archeparchy and its parishes was achieved with the positive and hopeful participation of clergy, religious and laity enabled by the Grace of God. Most gratifying to me was the personal journey of prayer and fraternity experienced with the clergy, religious and faithful of the Archeparchy. The highlight of my ministry in leadership was experienced when amidst parishioners and their ministers in parish liturgical celebrations, visits, pilgrimages, festivals, and in personal sharing. I was inspired by the dedication of the clergy, religious and faithful and their love for their Church. I am also especially grateful for the fraternity and cooperation shared with my brother bishops of USA, with whom common needs of clergy, religious and Archive photo June 2017 faithful were addressed in our regular meetings, and in gatherings of our Church. The Grace of God provided richly in our many shared endeavors. The Risen Christ greeted his apostles with the words, “Peace be with you!” May the peace offered by the Risen Christ characterize our continued love and service of our Ukrainian Catholic Church. Let us remember one another in prayer as we seek the intercession of the Mother of God in this time of transition being experienced within the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia and in our Ukrainian Catholic Church in the USA. Iwan Dacko, F. Oleh Turii It is general knowledge that the year 1989 marked a significant change in the public life of Eastern European countries. Ukraine was no exception. After the celebrations of the millennium of Baptism of Kyivan Rus’ (1988) one can even speak of a resurrection (Keleher 1993; 1997, Gudziak 1997, p. 49–72) of political, and particularly reli- gious life in Ukraine, which ultimately lead to the proclamation of its independence on 24 August 1991 and disintegration of Soviet Union. When we compare statistics they speak for themselves. In 1985 there were 16 religious confessions registered in the Ukrainian SSR, whereas in 2011 the number had risen to 120. In 1985, on the other hand, 6.2 thousand religious communities were oYcially recorded in Ukraine, whereas in 2011 they were 34.5 thousand, tendency increasing (Tserkva i suspil’stvo 2000–2001, p. 207)1. Objectively one has to admit that with such increase, there were tensions and conflict situations within these communities. This fact has been widely noted, especially among the Western mass media, frequently exaggerated and overestimated on all sides. Furthermore, there were and are tendencies to overemphasize these facts and politicize them. Today, however, after more than twenty years, we dare to express the opinion that basically it was, and still is the search towards self identification, or rather identity, of each religious community.

    Pope Francis Appoints Most Rev. Borys Gudziak as new Metropolitan- Archbishop of the Ukrainian Archeparchy of Philadelphia On Monday, February 18th, 2019, the Vatican Information Service announced that the Holy Father has appointed Most Rev. Borys Gudziak as Archbishop of Philadelphia for Ukrainians and Metropolitan for the Ukrainian Catholic Church in USA and thus concurring with the recommendation of the appointment offered by the Synod of Ukrainian Catholic Bishops, which met in September of 2018 in Lviv, Ukraine. The Archeparchy of Philadelphia was declared by Pope Francis as “sede vacante” following the resignation of Most Rev. Stefan Soroka on April 16, 2018. Most Rev. Andriy Rabiy was named by Pope Francis as the Apostolic Administrator of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia until the appointment of the new Metropolitan- Archbishop. At the present time Most Rev. Borys Gudziak serves as the eparch of St. Volodymyr the Great Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy, which includes France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg and Switzerland. He is the founder and president of the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine. In addition, Archbishop Borys is the head of Department of External Church Relations of the Ukrainian Catholic Church.     E d i t o r i a l Com maior ou menor sabedoria, o ser humano se defronta com as mais diversas facetas de sua existência: o nascimento, a infância, a adolescência, a juventude, a vida adulta, a velhice e a morte. Todas essas fases passam pelo desenvolvimento às vezes mais harmonioso, muitas vezes dramático e conflituoso. São tantas as condições e situações pessoais, sociais, ambientais e históricas que caracterizam e colorem a vida humana. Sem dúvida, a morte é uma das experiências mais dramáticas para a vivência humana. O povo simples diz: “a morte é a verdade mais verdadeira”, ninguém dela escapa. É normalíssima a morte de uma pessoa idosa, que viveu sua vida e cumpriu sua missão aqui na terra. O problema são as mortes absurdas, antes do tempo, a morte antes do nascimento, a morte por causa da fome ou por causa da violência, o suicídio, a morte das guerras, a morte no trânsito irresponsável e louco... Num olhar metafísico, transcendental, teológico, a morte é uma realidade envolta num profundo mistério, diante do qual são apresentadas inúmeras explicações, dependendo da cultura e da religiosidade de cada povo ou indivíduo. Para os céticos, com a morte acaba tudo. Para os crentes, especificamente os cristãos, a morte é simplesmente a passagem para outra dimensão, para outra vida. O mistério pascal é a passagem da morte para a vida, tal qual o vivenciou Jesus Cristo, ressuscitando e assim abrindo o caminho para nós, seus seguidores. Se com ele vivemos e morremos, com ele ressuscitaremos para a vida eterna, nos ensina o Apóstolo São Paulo.

No other European country suffered as much as TUkraine, whose currency was devalued by more than 60 percent since its peak of 4.95 hrv per $1 in August 2008. In addition, the country’s industrial production fell by 31 percent in 2009. Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko con- fronted the challenge of minimizing the crisis fallout, while at the same time campaigning for the 2010 presi- dential elections. Her critics attacked her for pursuing populist policies, such as increasing wages and hiring more government staff, when the state treasury was broke as early as the spring. Ms. Tymoshenko herself admitted that her gov- ernment would not have been able to make all its pay- ments without the help of three tranches of loans, worth approximately $10.6 billion, provided by the International Monetary Fund. Her critics believe that instead of borrowing money, Ms. Tymoshenko should have been introducing radical reforms to the Ukrainian economy, reducing government waste, eliminating out- dated Soviet-era benefits and trimming the bureaucracy. RON ROBERSON SEIA NEWSLETTER On the Eastern Churches and Ecumenism Number 271: April 30, 2018 Washington, DC The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate Considers Requests for Ukrainian Autocephaly PRESIDENT OF UKRAINE PETRO POROSHENKO ON TUESDAY, APRIL 17, ANNOUNCED THE START OF THE PROCEDURE FOR THE CREATION OF A UNIFIED UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH. The relevant agreement was reached at 7-hour long negotiations between Poroshenko and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Synod members held during a presidential visit to Turkey, Poroshenko said at a meeting with heads of parliamentary factions on Tuesday. "Ukraine is as close as ever to the emergence of its own Unified Orthodox Church," the president said, adding that he cannot elaborate on all details of the agreements reached. A number of elements are needed for the process to see success, including, a corresponding appeal from UOC of the Kyiv Patriarchate and Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, which has already been signed to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in a rare united move of the two churches, according to Poroshenko. Poroshenko expressed hope that the new UOC would be created before the 1030th anniversary of baptism of the Kyiv Rus and called on Parliament to support the appeal to Constantinople. The president called the developments around a possible creation of a United Orthodox Church which would not be subordinate to Moscow a "historic event." The president ruled out the possibility of banning any other churches in Ukraine and noted that the state will remain separated from church. – Unian, April 17.
