It was an attempt to put Ukrainians down on their knees, destroy national identity, kill hope for the right to create one’s own fate on the native land. “In this way, the empire tried to ruin the very foundations of a freedom-loving nation, undermine our spiritual culture and ethnic identity. But I am deeply convinced that just as 80 years ago, any Moscow’s power is unable to put Ukrainians down on their knees and force them abandon the idea of Freedom, Independence, Dignity and Unity,” the Head of State said. NICHOLAS IN CHICAGO March 3, 1942-August 16, 2016 The Most Reverend Richard Stephen Seminack, fell asleep in the Lord, August 16, 2016 after a prolonged illness. At the time of his death, Bishop Seminack was serving as the fourth bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of St. Nicholas in Chicago. Bishop Seminack was born on March 3, 1942 to Raymond and Anna Cwiek Seminack in Philadelphia, PA. His paternal grandparents emigrated from Ternopil, Ukraine while his maternal grandparents came from Peremyshil, Ukraine. The oldest of seven children, he attended St. Martin of Tours Catholic Elementary School and Father Judge May 25, 1967 priestly ordination of Deacon Richard Seminack at the Catholic High School in hands of Metropolitan Ambrose Senyshyn.

Iwan Dacko, F. Oleh Turii It is general knowledge that the year 1989 marked a significant change in the public life of Eastern European countries. Ukraine was no exception. After the celebrations of the millennium of Baptism of Kyivan Rus’ (1988) one can even speak of a resurrection (Keleher 1993; 1997, Gudziak 1997, p. 49–72) of political, and particularly reli- gious life in Ukraine, which ultimately lead to the proclamation of its independence on 24 August 1991 and disintegration of Soviet Union. When we compare statistics they speak for themselves. In 1985 there were 16 religious confessions registered in the Ukrainian SSR, whereas in 2011 the number had risen to 120. In 1985, on the other hand, 6.2 thousand religious communities were oYcially recorded in Ukraine, whereas in 2011 they were 34.5 thousand, tendency increasing (Tserkva i suspil’stvo 2000–2001, p. 207)1. Objectively one has to admit that with such increase, there were tensions and conflict situations within these communities. This fact has been widely noted, especially among the Western mass media, frequently exaggerated and overestimated on all sides. Furthermore, there were and are tendencies to overemphasize these facts and politicize them. Today, however, after more than twenty years, we dare to express the opinion that basically it was, and still is the search towards self identification, or rather identity, of each religious community.

I am also publishing alongside the financial statements a letter from Father Steven Paliwoda, the Eparchy’s Financial Officer, to explain many items in the financial statements in detail. I encourage you to read Father Steven’s letter in conjunction with the financial statements. It is important for the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Saint Josaphat in Parma to be a good steward of the gifts entrusted to it, and transparent about its finances. Having our finances audited by an independent accounting firm, and publishing our financial statements online and sending them to all of our parishes, puts the Eparchy amongst the most financially transparent Catholic dioceses in the world. In the same way, it is also very important for each parish to be transparent in its finances and accountable to the faithful, who support the Church and for whom the Church exists to serve. Not only was Soroka, at 49, the youngest cleric ever to be named archbishop of the Philadelphia Archeparchy, the titular head of the U.S. denomination, but he was an outsider. Soroka was born in Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada. Some American-born clergy and parishioners wondered: “Why not one of our own?” For 17 years, Soroka has presided over a 100,000-member national church in transition. He has led the nation’s Ukrainian Catholics as membership has declined and immigrants from Ukraine have helped to replenish the pews, all while coping with health challenges that include a heart condition and cancer. Earlier this year, he decided to follow his doctor’s advice and resign from his duties. Todas essas fases passam pelo desenvolvimento às vezes mais harmonioso, muitas vezes dramático e conflituoso. São tantas as condições e situações pessoais, sociais, ambientais e históricas que caracterizam e colorem a vida humana. Sem dúvida, a morte é uma das experiências mais dramáticas para a vivência humana. O povo simples diz: “a morte é a verdade mais verdadeira”, ninguém dela escapa. É normalíssima a morte de uma pessoa idosa, que viveu sua vida e cumpriu sua missão aqui na terra. O problema são as mortes absurdas, antes do tempo, a morte antes do nascimento, a morte por causa da fome ou por causa da violência, o suicídio, a morte das guerras, a morte no trânsito irresponsável e louco... Num olhar metafísico, transcendental, teológico, a morte é uma realidade envolta num profundo mistério, diante do qual são apresentadas inúmeras explicações, dependendo da cultura e da religiosidade de cada povo ou indivíduo. Para os céticos, com a morte acaba tudo. Para os crentes, especificamente os cristãos, a morte é simplesmente a passagem para outra dimensão, para outra vida. O mistério pascal é a passagem da morte para a vida, tal qual o vivenciou Jesus Cristo, ressuscitando e assim abrindo o caminho para nós, seus seguidores. Traska, who moved to Baltimore from Ukraine at age 6, drove more than an hour Nov. 11 from her Keedysville home in Washington County to the church on Patterson Park in Baltimore. Traska celebrated her first Communion and was married at the parish. “We grew up here,” said Traska, who attended St. Elizabeth School, Seton Keough High School and Notre Dame of Maryland University, all in Baltimore. “I love the music.” The Eastern Catholic church is in the Archdiocese of Baltimore but falls under the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia. Metropolitan Archbishop Stefan Soroka and Father Vasyl Sivinskyi, pastor, were two of the five clergy members at the Mass. During his homily – almost entirely in Ukrainian – Archbishop Soroka said “you are called to be like God in all things.” About 250 people, many of whom are fluent in English and Ukrainian, filled the small church during the two-hour liturgy, which was mostly sung and in Ukrainian. A reception, dinner and dancing followed Mass. John Wojtowycz, a parishioner and co-chair of the centennial committee, said the celebration was important “because the core value of your culture and beliefs continue.” Andrij Chornodolsky, a parishioner since moving to Baltimore from Ukraine at age 4, co-chaired the committee. “To me and to the community it really says a lot,” Chornodolsky said of the centennial.
