E d i t o r i a l Com maior ou menor sabedoria, o ser humano se defronta com as mais diversas facetas de sua existência: o nascimento, a infância, a adolescência, a juventude, a vida adulta, a velhice e a morte. Todas essas fases passam pelo desenvolvimento às vezes mais harmonioso, muitas vezes dramático e conflituoso. São tantas as condições e situações pessoais, sociais, ambientais e históricas que caracterizam e colorem a vida humana. Sem dúvida, a morte é uma das experiências mais dramáticas para a vivência humana. O povo simples diz: “a morte é a verdade mais verdadeira”, ninguém dela escapa. É normalíssima a morte de uma pessoa idosa, que viveu sua vida e cumpriu sua missão aqui na terra. O problema são as mortes absurdas, antes do tempo, a morte antes do nascimento, a morte por causa da fome ou por causa da violência, o suicídio, a morte das guerras, a morte no trânsito irresponsável e louco... Num olhar metafísico, transcendental, teológico, a morte é uma realidade envolta num profundo mistério, diante do qual são apresentadas inúmeras explicações, dependendo da cultura e da religiosidade de cada povo ou indivíduo. Para os céticos, com a morte acaba tudo. Para os crentes, especificamente os cristãos, a morte é simplesmente a passagem para outra dimensão, para outra vida. O mistério pascal é a passagem da morte para a vida, tal qual o vivenciou Jesus Cristo, ressuscitando e assim abrindo o caminho para nós, seus seguidores. Se com ele vivemos e morremos, com ele ressuscitaremos para a vida eterna, nos ensina o Apóstolo São Paulo. -

Denysenko Abstract (Українське резюме на ст. 67) This article analyzes the intersection of “church” and “state” in Ukraine and the many complexities of a situation involving a multiplicity of both ecclesial and political actors: in the latter category, both Russia and Ukraine itself, in the context of a globalized world; in the former category the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate; the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (in both pre- and post-war iterations); the Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church; and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyiv Patriarchate. Adding to the complexity of these relations among these chur- ches and between these states is a new theopolitical ideology being sponsored by the current Patriarch Kiril of Moscow under the heading of a “Russian world,” which is supposed to unite at least East-Slavic Orthodoxy (if not other Orthodox Churches) and their host countries against the perceived threats of “Western” globalization. This “Russian world” is analyzed here for what it says, what reactions it has evoked among the four major churches in Ukraine; and for what it might portend for Orthodox Christians in Ukraine and well as relations between Moscow and Constantinople in the ongoing struggle for understanding of global primacy among Orthodox hierarchs. 1 All translations from Ukrainian and Russian are by Nicholas Denysenko unless otherwise noted. 34 Nicholas E. Tomasz Szyszlak* The conflict over the autocephaly of Ukrainian Orthodoxy as an element of the hybrid war Konflikt wokół autokefalii ukraińskiego prawosławia jako element wojny hybrydowej Abstract: The issue of the autocephaly of Ukrainian Orthodoxy has once again demonstrated that the concept of atheism and the fight against reli- gion propagated by the communists did not bring the expected results. On the contrary, religion has become a factor that connects societies in the re- publics of the former USSR with the former metropolis, especially for Slavic and Orthodox populations. It should not come as a surprise, therefore, that the problem of the autocephaly of Ukrainian Orthodoxy has been exploited in the current Russian-Ukrainian dispute, described as a post-imperial hybrid war. The aim of this article is to show how both sides of the conflict are using the issue of the autocephaly of Ukrainian Orthodoxy. Odwrotnie – religia stała się czynnikiem integrującym społeczeństwa republik byłego ZSRR z dawną metropolią, a uwaga ta dotyczy zwłaszcza ludności sło- wiańskiej i prawosławnej. Nie powinno zatem dziwić, że problem autokefalii ukraińskiego prawosławia został wykorzystany w aktualnym sporze rosyjsko- -ukraińskim, określanym jako postimperialna wojna hybrydowa. -

UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH - A POWERFUL PEACE ACTOR? According to the Constitution, Ukraine is a secular state, where its churches and all religious organizations are separated from the state and the legislative process. According to theologian Gennadiy Druzenko, in the framework of the regional scope, Ukraine might be described as one of the most religious countries in Europe.1 It is an undeniable fact, as the history of the Ukrainian Church dates back to the times of the Kyivan Rus, when its Prince Volodymyr the Great received Christianity from Constantinople in 988. It was one of the most remarkable event in the Ukrainian state creation that united Ukrainian people spiritually. However, it further served as an instrument of manipulations and basis for lies from the Russian side so as to justify its rights for the Ukrainian state. Further centuries are marked by a constant fight of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate, Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, one of the most pivotal soft instruments of the Russian hybrid warfare and the Russian foreign policy in promoting ideas of the so-called “Russian World”, to become a powerful actor on the international arena and win hearts and minds of Ukrainians. Nevertheless, in the times of the “Ukraine crisis”, that broke out in 2014 after the illegal annexation of Crimea and the manifestations of the Russian aggression in Eastern Ukraine, the question of the religious independence from Russia was more pressing than ever. And finally, on January 9, 2019, a historical event has taken place – Ecumenical Patriarchate Bartholomew signed the Tomos of autocephaly, as a result the newly-established Orthodox Church of Ukraine was granted its canonical independence. -

Ukraine’s second democratically-elected Verkhovna Rada met for the first time on May 12 for a plenary ses- sion dealing with organizational matters and was high- lighted by the annual state of the nation address delivered before the body by Ukraine’s president, Leonid Kuchma. Chaos erupted on the floor of the parliament, however, as soon as National Deputy Slava Stetsko took to the podium to swear-in her fellow parliamentarians and offi- cially open the 14th session. As this session’s oldest member, the 78-year-old mem- ber of Parliament assumed the responsibility of leading her fellow parliamentarians in taking the oath, a right granted to her by Ukraine’s Constitution. As Mrs. Stetsko stepped to the podium, Communist Party members began hooting and raised a banner stating, “Banderites out,” referring to a branch of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, a party in which Mrs. Stetsko was active for most of her life and one opposed to com- munism.
