Dear Fathers, Слава Ісусу Христу!

On Thursday, November 15, our Church will begin a 40-day St. Philip’s Fast. This is the time of our spiritual preparation to celebrate the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ, which involves a deeper prayer, stricter fasting and generous almsgiving. Prayer renews our faith in Lord, fasting strengthens our will and self-control, and almsgiving turns our attention to our neighbor especially those who are in need, lonely and alone.

I would like to ask that your parish or parishes choose a social service project that would benefit less fortunate in your own parish and local community. For example, food or clothing drive, Christmas dinner baskets, grocery gift cards, provide presents for children especially orphans, shut-ins, homeless, less fortunate, etc. You are free to come up with other kinds of social service projects.

I suggest FOUR steps to realize a project 1. Choose your social service project; 2. Set-up a team that will run the project; 3. Announce the project in the parish and neighborhood; set dates; ask for volunteers; 4. Distribute the collected items to the people for whom it is intended OR execute the event before Christmas.

This Parish Christmas social service project is to be done in every parish of our Archeparchy. Please inform me by December 1, 2018, as to what project your parish or parishes will be doing. You may email me at [email protected], phone or letter. If your parish is already planning something, you do not have to do another or different one. Just inform me what it will be. We would like to share your events in The Way and other social media and will be asking for photos and a brief statement about your chosen project.

If your parish wishes to help children and needy in Ukraine, you may do so in addition to the Christmas social service event for less fortunate parishioners, neighborhood residents and children that may be suffering from financial hardship. Be open to helping out and help your parishioners to become a part of something great – to give a helping hand to brighten up someone’s Christmas.

Thank you! May the good and loving Lord bless you always!

Very Respectfully,

+Andriy Rabiy Apostolic Administrator for the Archeparchy of Philadelphia

Today’s coloring page is a picture of Venerable Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. He was born in 1865 in Prylbychi, a small village near the great city of Lviv. Can you find Ukraine on a map? You will see the city of Lviv is in western Ukraine. His parents named him Roman. Even though his mother and father adopted Polish culture and ethnicity, young Roman knew he was also Ukrainian and had many Ukrainian ancestors. He loved Ukraine and the Ukrainian Catholic Church. His family was famous and had lots of money but he loved and served the poor people of his country. In 1891 he joined the order of Saint Basil the Great and took the name Andrey or Andrew in honor of St. Andrew the Apostle. He became a priest, a bishop and finally a Metropolitan archbishop. In that position, he was head of the whole Ukrainian Catholic Church and even visited the United States, Canada and South America. Venerable Andrey led the Ukrainian Catholic Church through two world wars always standing up against unjust governments, like the Nazi government in Germany and the Atheist Communists of the Soviet Union. Several times he was even arrested. When the Nazis started to arrest and kill the Jewish people, Sheptytsky hid many Jewish people so the Nazis couldn’t find them and kill them. He also asked everyone else to help hide them in churches, monasteries and in people’s homes. He saved many lives, including many children. Since he died on November 1, 1944, November is a great month to think about the life of Andrey Sheptytsky, a life full of love for God, love for the Church, love for his country and love for his neighbor. We should try to imitate him in all these things and always show God that we love Him by loving and helping our neighbor.

3. Growth in Faith: Catechumenate, Illumination, Sacramental Initiation 63 In the first centuries, the catechesis of non-baptized adults inthe Church took place in three stages: Catechumenate, Illumination, and Initiation. The Catechumenate (from the Greek katekhoumenos, mean- ing one being instructed ) began with the presentation of a new candi- date to the Christian community. With the agreement of the commu- nity, the candidate became a catechumen. The name of this person was announced to the community; and now, the Holy Scriptures would be announced to the catechumen. Such catechumens sometimes remained in the narthex of the church, which served as an outward symbol of the catechumens’ inner spiritual state: they were leaving the world behind,

Having listened to the Word of God and the homily at the Divine Lit- urgy, the catechumens were obliged to leave the church after the prayer “The of the church community for them—the Litany for the Catechumens. 64 The Catechumenate initiated the stage during which catechumens source of familiarized themselves with the faith and prepared for Baptism. It is the beginning of initiation into the mysteries (in Christ.” - Greek, mystagogia). Having become a participant in the Death and Res- urrection of Christ, the newly baptized person is sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit in Chrismation, and in the Eucharist receives the food of eternal life. 66 In our tradition, Christian sacramental initiation is expressed also in spatial terms. Baptism begins in the narthex or baptistery, Chrismation Catechism of takes place in the nave or temple of the faithful, and Holy Communion at the threshold of the sanctuary. The newly baptized are clothed in the Ukrainian bright garments (in Ukrainian, kryzhmo), which in the early Church Catholic were worn throughout all of Bright Week. These garments signify the Church: Christ - joy of life in Christ and the expectation of the fullness of one’s encoun- Our Pascha ter with God at the second coming of Christ.

4. Environment in which Faith is Transmitted: Family, Nation, and Church 67 The primary context in which faith is transmitted is the family. Par- ents form their children in the faith by the example of their lives and the words of their prayer. In teaching the Gospel and witnessing to it, parents become the first catechists for their children. As they raise children in a Christian manner, parents create in their family a special atmosphere, one of common prayer before icons and the observance of Sundays and feast days. 68 From a young age, children enter into the spiritual life. This life is built on prayer, hearing the Word of God, and receiving Holy Commun- ion. As they grow into maturity, with the assistance of their parents, children grow in the grace of the Mystery of Baptism. They learn to 31 NOVEMBER 18, 2018 25 Catechism Catechism of the Ukrainian Catholic Church: Christ - Our Pascha (continued from previous page)

overcome evil and do what is good. For children, the inheritance of faith received from their parents is a token of assurance of eternal life. The godly life of godparents and extended family members also plays “The an important role in a child’s maturing in the faith. Christian family customs establish in children a Christian perspective on human birth source of and death, the formation of families and familial relationships, and they develop a sense of belonging within a church community and Christian one’s people. life is 69 Every nation is a community, with its own historical memory, earthly homeland, and struggle for well-being and perfection. It was to the faith in nations that Christ sent his apostles: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son the risen and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you” (Mt 28:19-20). The Christianization of the nations Christ.” - depends upon the gradual formation of a Christian worldview and structuring of life. The Christian culture of a given nation is a means for transmitting the faith from one generation to the next. RESOLUTION

Recognizing the 85th Anniversary of the Ukrainian Genocide of 1932-1933.

WHEREAS, The Ukrainian Community of Greater Philadelphia, a dynamic community with many organizations and institutions is in sadness commemorating the 85th Anniversary of the Ukrainian Genocide. 85 years ago, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and his totalitarian regime committed an act of genocide through the implementation of an engineered famine, confiscating land, grain and animals from the Ukrainian people resulting in deaths of up to 10 million innocent men, women and children; and

WHEREAS, This genocide, Holodomor, meaning “Murder by Starvation”, was specifically designed by the Soviet regime to punish independent-minded Ukrainians for their resistance to its economic, political, and social oppression; and

WHEREAS, At the height of the Holodomor in 1933, Ukrainians died at the rate of 25,000 a day with nearly a third of its victims being children less than 10 years old; and

WHEREAS, Even as the Soviets continued to export Ukraine’s grain to the rest of the world, Ukrainian farmers, who tended to the farms in the “bread basket of the U.S.S.R”, were tragically starved to a slow and painful death; and

WHEREAS, Hundreds of archival KGB documents created during this genocide detailed and described the Soviet regime’s actions and intention to destroy Ukraine’s national identity by deporting and executing Ukraine's religious, intellectual and cultural leaders, prosecuting or executing any others who dared to speak of the famine or to speak against the Soviet authorities publicly, further destabilizing Ukraine’s political structure; and

WHEREAS, Under the global theme “Ukraine Remembers, the World Acknowledges,” it is necessary that the Ukrainian Genocide, Holodomor 1932-1933, be officially recognized by the global community as a tragic and heinous crime against humanity to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future; now therefore, be it
