Catechism

323 Among the martyrs of our Church, a special place of honour is given to the hieromartyr Josaphat, Archbishop of Polotsk, who suffered for the unity of Christ’s Church in the time of the Union of Brest. His personage as a passion-bearer is an example of self-sacrifice for the sake of reconciliation. Like Saints Borys and Hlib, he preferred to sacrifice his own life than to see the shedding of his brothers’ blood.

They are not there as a barrier to keep us out of Heaven but as doors through which we enter. The sanctuary or “holy place” is behind the iconostasis. It represents the Heavenly Liturgy. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED BYZIMOM.COM © 2019 ARTWORK BY LILLIAN BARON (C) 2019 JULY 21, 2019 40 Children’s Corner The Catechism of The Ukrainian Catholic Church This month, we are studying the beautiful icon of Mary over the altar in the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Before we grab our crayons, let’s check out what our Catechism has to say about devotion to the Most Holy Mother of God. Read through the Table of Contents for Part One, The Prayer of the Church. Toward the end of Part One, you will see section C, The Church—A New Creation. See if you can find the page number for the section on Devotion to the Most Holy Mother of God. You will see it begins on page 109. Let’s read page 109 through to the bottom of page 111. You will see that among all the saints, the Theotokos holds the first and most important place. Her life is a model for everyone. Our Lady and all the saints forever pray before God. Not only are they in heaven but “they are also present among us by the grace of God in their relics and icons.” One way we honor Mary is in her feasts all through the church year. We honor her in the events in her life by our love and our prayers. Can you remember what some of these important events are?

•Her Conception by Saint Anne—This is the moment when the Theotokos first was created in the womb of St. Anne. St. Anne carried Mary in her womb for nine months before Mary was born. •The Nativity of the Mother of God—this is when Mary was born—her birthday. •Mary’s Entrance into the Temple—when Mary was three years old, her parents, St. Joachim and St. Anne brought her to the temple to live so she could be totally dedicated to God. •The Annunciation—When Mary was a young woman, the Angel Gabriel came to her and announced that God chose her to be the Mother of His Son. Mary always did the will of God •The Encounter in the Temple—Mary and St. Joseph took Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem forty days after his birth in obedience to the law. •The Dormition—Mary’s death was not like other deaths. By God’s grace, Mary was exalted above all others, and her body and soul were taken to heaven. Her death was as peaceful as sleep. Dormition means “falling asleep.” We not only honor Mary in her special feast days, but also in her icons. There are many different icons of the Theotokos. In some, as in this month’s coloring page, we see Jesus in a circle of light representing Our Lord when he was in Mary’s womb. In others, we see her holding her child and pointing to Him; showing us the way to Him. Sometimes she is hugging Him and Jesus is snuggling close to her. Sometimes we see her praying, holding her arms up in prayer for us. Have you seen the icon where she is holding her child as He is thinking about how He will someday die for us on the cross? Look around your church. Which icons of the Theotokos do you see? Always remember to honor her when you enter your church. There is a long tradition among Eastern Catholics of love for Our Blessed Mother. Take a long, loving look at some of these icons and you will see that Mary is looking back at you with love, kindness and gentleness. We can count on her for help and protection. SSMI UPDATE Dear Friends,

Last all, you receied our letter in hich e shared ith you our “State of the SSMI’s in the U.S.” We informed you that, due to the lack of financial resources, no incomin ocations and ain sisters, e needed to implement a plan to assure the care of our elderly sisters, and the iaility of our ministry to the people. This strategic planning involved the necessity of placing St. Mary’s Villa and some surroundin property on the market for sale. am takin the opportunity to send this update with our annual Dormition Novena. In today’s orld e hear a lot of “Fake News” and want to clarify some information with the following “Facts.”

1) St. Mary’s Villa has not been sold as of this moment. We are in negotations with propsective buyers. 2) The Holy Dormition Pilgrimage will continue to be hosted by the Sisters Servants for as long as we are here in Sloatsburg, NY, even with the sale of St. Mary’s. 3) We are passionate about expanding St. Joseph’s Adult Care Home so that we can upgrade to an Assisted Living Facility. This expansion will ensure the homelike and compassionate care of many more of our elderly. 4) However, this dream cannot become a reality without the expedient sale of St. Mary’s or the miraculous donation to help us get this project “off the ground.”

1) St. Mary’s Villa

St. Mary’s Villa.

JULY 21, 2019 46 Advertisements

Open Letter to Readers of “The Way” from Saint Basil Academy

The following letter to all alumnae of Saint Basil Academy, to all Ukrainians of the Philadelphia Archeparchy, and to all who care about the future of Ukrainian Catholic schools in the United States, is meant to share the critical crossroads faced by Saint Basil Academy, all-girls private Ukrainian Academy in Jenkintown, PA since 1931. I am writing to you about a moment of importance for all of us who love Saint Basil Academy. Today, we are experiencing both exciting and anxious times at our school. Excitement comes as we graduate another class of outstanding young women and fulfill our mission to empower students to become spiritual and visionary leaders. Just recently, we hosted 47 8th grade students for a test preparation course and scholarship test and 105 young women to our basketball, field hockey, and volleyball athletic camps. The accomplishments of the past year, however, have not been without challenges. Today, Saint Basil Academy is in the midst of the demographic challenges facing many schools. While our academic programs, extracurricular activities, and bonds of sisterhood have remained excellent, our ability to sustain ourselves through tuition only is no longer the case. To ensure the Academy’s mission for future St. Basil students, we are reaching out to make you aware of the Sustainability Campaign that the Academy has recently launched. The Sustainability Campaign is geared toward ensuring our future as an educational institution that fosters leadership, confidence, and self-awareness in young women, with faithfulness to our mission and our Ukrainian Catholic roots. Below are some key points about the campaign that we hope you find informative.

• The campaign’s goal is financial sustainability so that the school can continue its vision of maximizing individual potential while enhancing academic programs and the facilities. • To achieve this goal we need to increase our annual giving to $300,000 and increase major donor participation to fund a $5 million dollar endowment.

A key component of the campaign is in making everyone connected to the community aware of our need for your support. I reach out to you to join us in supporting the Sustainability Campaign. Please visit our website at www.stbasilacademy.org/giving to find out how you can help the only remaining Ukrainian Catholic Academy in the Philadelphia area ensure a strong future. Or please send your donation to: Saint Basil Academy, Sustainability Campaign, 711 Fox Chase Road, Jenkintown, PA 19046. Our deep gratitude and God’s Blessings for your generosity. Sincerely,
