At the moment of the Cru- cifixion all the Apostles had fled save one, John, who stood at the foot of the Cross with the Mother of God. Everyone else had abandoned Christ, only a small group of women stood at a short distance from the Cross, and when He had died, they came to anoint His Body which Joseph of Arimathea had sought from Pilate, unafraid of being recog- nised as a disciple, because in life and in death love and faithfulness had conquered. 1 SCHEDULE Time Feast or Intention, requested by 05 May, Sunday 10:00 AM Divine Liturgy for all parishioners First Confession, and First Solemn Communion 06 May, Monday 10:00 AM Divine Liturgy for the Jean Baydock offered by Adeline Shy- manski 07 May, Tuesday 6:30 PM Moleben to the Mother of God Followed by Pastoral Meeting 08 May, Wednesday 6:00 PM Divine Liturgy for the soul of Jean Baydock offered by Delores & Steve Zegalski. Adult Catechism Class January 25, 2016 The Ukrainian Catholic Church in our Modern World Part 1: Scripture Readings: Matthew 28:19-20: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 9:37-38: Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. “Therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.” John 10:14-16: I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. Part 2: What is the Ukrainian Catholic Church? In simplistic terms, the Ukrainian Catholic Church (also known as the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church) is a part of the Catholic Church that observes the same traditions as does Eastern Orthodoxy. It is, however, very much part of the Catholic Church. The head of the Universal Catholic Church, and hence the Ukrainian Catholic Church, is Pope Francis. The Ukrainian Catholic Church world-wide is governed internally by the Synod of Ukrainian Catholic Bishops; its highest ranking cleric is Patriarch (Major Archbishop) Sviatoslav Shevchuk.

From there the apostles and their successors received the command: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the ages” (Mt. 28:19). By the command of Christ, the Gospel was to be proclaimed to the entire world, embracing all nations. Rising above national, cultural, political, economic, social and all other man-made barriers and restrictions, “the Church of Jesus Christ is neither Latin, Greek, nor Slav, but Catholic; there is not and cannot be any difference between her children, no matter what they be otherwise, whether Latins, Greeks or Slavs, or any other nationality: all of them are equal around the table of the Holy See” (Pope Benedict XIV; see Vatican II, Eastern Catholic Churches, no.

  • Ukraine: at Last, a New Constitution
No. 52 THE UKRAINIAN WEEKLY SUNDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1996 3 1996: THE YEAR IN REVIEW Ukraine: at last, a new Constitution lthough Ukraine was preparing to observe its fifth anniversary as an independent state in 1996, it seemed it would mark that milestone while retain- ing its Soviet-era constitution. And, though Ukraine was Athe last of the former Soviet republics to ratify a new Constitution, its Verkhovna Rada did so in dramatic style as the culmination of an all-night intense session that went on for more than 16 hours without a break. The big event occurred in the morning hours of June 28. The mood was euphoric and the atmosphere remi- niscent of the day when Parliament had declared Ukraine’s independence on August 24, 1991. The historic new Constitution established Ukraine as an independent, democratic, social, law-governed and unitary state with single citizenship. It enshrined Ukrainian as the official language, while guaranteeing the “free development” of the Russian language and other languages spoken by the citizens of Ukraine. The new Constitution of Ukraine guarantees basic democratic freedoms and rights, establishes a Western- style judicial system, guarantees the right to private prop- erty and the right to own land, and clearly divides power between the executive and legislative branches of power. Efrem Lukatsky “We have joined the league of European nations — June 28: Deputies celebrate the adoption of Ukraine’s new Constitution by throwing Mykhailo Syrota, chairman nations that have chosen democracy and freedom, and there of the Verkhovna Rada’s ad hoc Committee on the Constitution, up into the air.

PASTORAL LETTER OF THE UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS IN CANADA ON THE OCCASION OF THE RESURRECTION OF OUR LORD Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen! “And He granted us eternal life…” Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ! On that first Easter morning, the myrrh-bearing women went to the tomb of Our Lord to perform one more act of love: to complete the burial ritual–which was hastily performed owing to the approaching Sabbath–and to anoint Jesus’ body with aromatic spices. As they approached the tomb, suddenly “there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightening, and his clothing white as snow.... The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, he has been raised from the dead” (Matthew 28: 2-7). And we, in turn, this Easter cry out with joy over and over again, “Christ is risen from the dead, trampling death by death, and to those in the tombs giving life!” Life. New life. Resurrected Life. This is the day of the Resurrection. Christ, our God, has brought us from death to life, and from earth to heaven. He who is the author of life could not be contained by the chains of death. Christ descended into the realm of death, and broke the bonds of those held captive there.
